in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful anchor attachment adapted for use in connection with check-row corn planters.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device for stretching the wire, the projections on which operate the check-row corn planter, whereby even rows of corn can be planted.
The further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature comprising simplicity, efliciency and durability.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an anchor for stretching the check wire of a check-row corn planter, which anchor is constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the parts adjusted in different positions.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the standard (which is adapted to be driven in the ground at the desired point) having a loop handle 2. Projecting laterally of the standard 1 is a frame 3, the
upper bar of which is provided with graduations 4, numbered from 1 to 10 inclusive. Slidable through the frame 3 is a forked end rod 5 having lateral projections 6 adjacent one end, between which projections and the end 7 of the frame a coil spring 8 is disposed, which surrounds the forkedend of the rod. The projections 6 slide in the grooves 6 of the frame 3. The grooves are shown in dotted lines. One of the forks of the rod beyond the projection 6 is constructed with an arrow head, 9, which, when the rod is moved in the direction of the arrow a, is brought opposite one or the other of the numbered graduations, so as to indicate the tension at which the wire 10 is stretched. If the arrow head 9 is brought opposite the number 7 on the graduated bar at the first stretching of the wire 10, each succeeding stretching of the wire should be the same, whereby corn may be planted in even rows.
The sector member 11 is provided with teeth 12. This sector member is braced'relatively to the standard 1 by the braces 13. Pivoted at 1 1 is a lever 15, which in turn is pivoted at 16 to the link 16 This link is connected at 16* to the rod 5. This lever 15 constitutes means for pulling the rod 5 through the frame 3 against the action of the spring. To hold the lever 15 at the desired point a dog 17 is provided, to engage any one of the teeth 12 of the sector. To disengage the dog from the teeth a hand grip 18 is supplied, which forms a part of the rod 19, to which the dog 17 is connected. This hand grip is arranged adjacent the handle 20 of the lever 15.
It will be clearly noted that as the lever 15 is moved in the direction of the arrow 6, the arrow head 9 is brought opposite the desired graduation, and as the check wire 10 is connected to the arrow head the same is stretched-to the desired tension. Projecting laterally of the standard 1 is a foot piece 21, which constitutes means for forcing the standard in to the ground, by the operator of the corn planter (not shown) placing his foot thereon and applying pressure. From the foregoing it will be noted that there has been devised a novel, simple and efficient device for stretching check wires of corn-planters, and one which has been found to be practicable.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a standard including a handle and a foot piece, and provided with a laterally projecting frame having graduations, a rod having a forked end portion including lateral projections and provided with an arrow head to which a check wire is adapted to be connected, a spring surrounding the rod between one end of the frame and the projection, asector braced relatively to the standard and provided with teeth, a lever pivoted to the sector and connected to the rod for retracting the same against action of the spring to bring the arrow head opposite the desired graduation, the lever havlng means to engage the teeth of the sector for holding the lever and the rod in a retracted position.
2. In combination, a standard having a handle and a foot piece, and elongated slot-ted frame having graduations secured to and projecting laterally from the standard, the frame having the adjacent longitudinal edges of the slot provided with elongated grooves, a rod arranged longitudinally movable through the frame and provided with an elongated forked end, the forks of which are provided with oppositely laterally extending projections extending into the grooves to assist in guiding the rod, one of the forks terminating into a laterally extending arrow head to cooperate with the graduations and to which the check wire is adapted to be connected, a spring arranged in the slot and surrounding the rod between one end of the frame and the projections, and a lever connected to the rod for retracting the same against the action of the spring to bring the arrow head opposite the desired graduation.
