To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MORDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chucks for Paper- Rolls, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to chuck-like devices provided for use on the paper-roll supporting spindle of printing presses of the newspaper type, and has for its purpose to clamp the paper-roll rigidly in place on the spindle during the printing process.
My invention has for its object to provide a clutch-like device which may be put 1n place and removed again with great rapidity; also to assure that when the chuck is applied it will rigidly hold the paper roll against rotating relatively to the shaft, or moving longitudinally on the latter; also, in cases where the core is made of paper, to avoid undue wear of that end of the core of the paper roll in which my chuck is inserted.
My invention further has for its object to so arrange the parts that in case the paper roll should start to rotate on thev spindle while the paper is being unwound, the chuck will automatically tighten and prevent further slipping; and that this feature shall be accomplished whether such loose rotation of the paper roll is clockwise or counter clockwise.
My invention also has for its object to permit nearly a complete utilization of the paper wound on the core of the spool.
These features, and others secondary -1 thereto, I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully described.

The expansion sleeve, a, is formed with a plurality of peripheral cones I), and is adapted to be readily slipped on the spindle c, on which the paper roll is to be mounted. At one end of the spindle, c, is rigidly secured, as usual, a set-collar c, provided with a setscrew f and formed with an integral peripheral tapered sleevedike portion g, facilitating its insertion in the related end of the core, represented by d. The expansion sleeve, a, is formed at its outer end with a peripheral flange L, formed with a cam face z', said cam face having a peripheral rim bevel as at The flange z, is formed with a hole at 7c, for receiving a spanner wrench. Cn the expansion sleeve, a, are mounted the segmental chuck-jaws Z, and the latter are formed on the interior with a plurality of stepped peripherally bevel faces m, the ineline of which conforms to the conical faces Z) of the member a. The segmental chuck* jaws are formed with parallel peripheral flanges n, n at their outer ends, and an intermediate groove` in which is located a ring 0 for holding the outer ends of the chuck-jaws together. v
As shown in Fig. 5, the chuckjaw member Z is made with a bevel at y?, so as to permit it to be moved into place after the com* panion chuck-jaw members have been assembled within the ring 0. The inner ends of the segmental chuck-j aws Z are formed with a peripheral groove g, in which to receive a snap ring fr, for holding such inner ends together.
The cam-face z' of the expansion sleeve, c, is formed at its highest point with a stoplug s, the purpose of which will presently appear. On the spindle c, in front of the expansion member a, is placed a locking collar t, provided with an integral locking inger 15'; a. perspect-ive detail of said collar being shown in Fig. 6. The collar t is convexed in cross-section at its eye or bore and it is formed at u with a serration. Compare Figs. l to 6. In order to then more securely lock the collar t in place, also to prolong its life indefinitely, I prefer to make it with an insert as at c', convex in cross section and provided on its inner face with the serrations as u; and it is to be noted that the ends o of the insert o are made with a bevel so as to have a key-like seat in the collar t, preventing the insert being moved out of place in one direction, and I provide a set-screw w, formed with a point w, as shown in Fig. 7, for holding the insert o against being moved out of place in the other direction. As the serrations u become worn away in service, by filing down slightly either of the ends Iv', v the insert f@ may be set out by the set-screw w, so as to again form a substantially perfect circle in the eye of the collar t. The latter, when placed on the spindle c, will not stand perpendicular thereto but at a slight angle, and any further tilting of the collar will cause its Serrat-ions u to grip the spindle and lock the collar against being moved longitudinally along the spindle. This action is aided by the convexity of the serrated surface u. In placing my chuck on the spindle, the expansion sleeve, a, and collar t must be so relatively arranged as to cause the finger t of the latter to bear against the lowest part of the cam-face of the former.
The operation of my chuck is as follows: The tapered collar c is, in the first instance, rigidly set on the spindle c at the desired point to properly locate the paper-roll on the spindle. Next the spindle c, with the tapered collar in place as mentioned, is slipped into the core Z of the paper-roll and brought to the position shown in Fig. l. The expansion-sleeved, with the segmental clutch-jaws Z mounted thereon, is then slipped on the opposite end of the spindle and into the corresponding end of the core (Z, as shown in Fig. l, bringing the left end of the core in contact with thefianges n of the segmental chuck jaws Z. A wrench of the type shown in Fig. S is then placed between the fianges n of the chuck-jaws Z and the flange Zt of the expansion sleeve a, and by then pushing against the laterally projecting handle ends of the wrench the segmental jaws may be forced into the core Z and brought to a position substantially as shown in Fig. l. A partial expansion of the segmental chuck-jaws is now brought about. by driving the expansion sleeve, a, still farther in by a few light blows with a lead hammer delivered against the end of the expansion sleeve, causing its conical faces Z to work under the bevel faces my of the segmental chuck-jaws Z,' the latter being prevented from moving along the spindle by reason of their flanges bearing against the end of the core (Z. rThe locking collar t is next slipped on the end of the spindle c, brought to the position shown in Fig. l, and fixed in place by setting up the screw fw, and thereby the insert fu. The round end of the wrench z2 is now inserted in the hole Zr of the expansion sleeve a, and the latter is rotated in order to cause a still further and powerful expansion of the segmental chuck jaws Z within the core; for since during such rotation the cam face z' of the expansion sleeve, a, will vbear against the finger t of the collar z5, and since the latter is locked in place on the spindle, such rotation of the expansion sleeve w'll cause it to move inward and thus wedge its conical faces Z) under the inclined faces m of the segmental chuck jaws thereby expanding the latter; and any subsequent Vlooseness of the paper roll causing a tendency of the paper roll to rotate on the spindle, while being unwound, is counteracted by a corresponding tightening action, brought about, as mentioned, by the movement of said cam face of the expansion sleeve over the nger Z of the stationary collar t. To release the chuck from the core (Z, after the paper has been unwound from the latter, force the point of the locking collar on the side opposite its finger 15 outward from the flange Zz of the expansion sleeve, a, by means of the flattened end e' of the wrench e. This releases the collar, and the expansion sleeve may then be readily forced out by inserting said flat end z' of the wrench between the flanges n of one of the segmental jaws Z and the fiange of the expansion sleeve a. This releases the clamping action of my chuck. To remove the chuck from the core, the wrench e is againA used, by placing it between the flange n of the chuck-j aw segment Z and the fiange /t of the expansion sleeve a., and then pulling on the lateral handle ends of the wrench. This will pull out the whole chuck, for the perpendicular faces of the inclined surfaces of the expansion member and the segmental chuck jaws will engage with each other, so that the pullling out of the expansion sleeve, a., will drag with it the segmental chuckjaws Z. The operations above outlined can be very rapidly performed and with but little exertion.
The stop lug s, provided on the cam-face z' of the collar ZL of the expansion member a, is an important part, for it prevents the finger 25 of the locking collar passing the highest point of said cam face.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2, representing a shorter chuck embodying the principles of my invention, the expansion sleeve a is formed with only a few peripheral cone faces Z2 and the segmental chuck jaws Z are provided with correspondingly incassa formed bevel faces m. The recess 7s is so formed as to permit the wrench end to be inserted therein for prying the parts apart; the recess in other respects corresponds to 7J in Fig. l.
Except as mentioned, the construction of the parts of the type of my chuck shown in Fig. 2 is substantially like that shown in the other views, and the parts common to both, and not changed in construction or operation, are designated by the same reference characters.
It will be noted that the convex cross section of the spindle-engaging faces of the locking collar aids the holding of t-helatter against being moved out of position, for any strain imposed on one edge oi the collar would tilt it and in so doing bind it in place on the spindle.
l claim:
1. A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; means for removably holding the segmental chuck jaws on the periphery of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in cross-section; the bearing face of the eye of the collar being made with longitudinal serrations; means for positively clamping said locking collar to the spindle; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said cam head of the expansion sleeve.
2. A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps ot the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in cross-section; a set-screw tor clamping said locking collar on the spindle; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said cani head of the expansion sleeve.
3. A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps ot the expansion sleeve; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being termed convex in cross-section, and having a movable spindlegripping portion, also made convex in crosssection and formed with longitudinal serrations on its spindle-enga ging tace g a set-screw for setting up the movable spindle-gripping` portion of the locking collar; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking linger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said cam head of the expansion sleeve.

A chuck lor paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral. conical steps and also with a cam head; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps ott' the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; peripheral grooves formed at the extremities oi said segmental chuck jaws and ring-like holding members removably inserted in said grooves; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye ot said collar being formed convex in cross-section; the bearing face oi' the eye ot' the collar being made with longitudinal serrations on its spindle-engaging face; a set-screw ior clamping said locking collar to the spindle; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking linger the extremity ot' which is adapted to hear and slide on said cam head ol' the expansion sleeve.
5. A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head; mental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps oit' the expansion sleeve; peripheral grooves formed at the extremities of said segmental chuck jaws and ring-like holding members removably inserted in said grooves; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye ot' said collar being torn'ied convex in cross-section, and having a movable spindle-gripping portion, also made convex in cross-section and formed with longitudinal serrations on its spindle-engaging face; a set-screw for setting up the movable spindle-gripping portion oit the locking collar; and said locking collaiutormed with an integral locking finger the extremity ot' which is adapted to bear and slide on said cani head of the expansion sleeve.
A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head having opposite inclines; a stop at the highest point of such inclines; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; means for removably holding the segmental chuck jaws on the periphery of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in cross section; the bearing face of the eye of the collar being made with longitudinal serrations; means for positively clamping said locking collar to the spindle; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inclines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve.
7. A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head having opposite inclines; a stop at the highest point of such inclines; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; means for removably holding the segmental chuck jaws on the periphery of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in cross section; the bearing face of the eye of the collar being made with longitudinal serrations; a set-screw for clamping said locking collar to the spindle; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inclines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve.

A chuck for paper roll comprising an expansion sleeve adapted to be mounted on a spindle and formed with peripheral conical steps and also with a cam head having opposite inclines; a stop at the highest point of such inclines; segmental chuck jaws adapted to be mounted on said conical steps f of the expansion sleeve and formed on their inner faces with bevel steps corresponding with the conical steps of the expansion sleeve; peripheral grooves formed atthe extremities of said segmental chuck jaws and ring-like holding members removably inserted in said grooves; a locking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in cross section and having a movable spindle-gripping portion, also made convex in cross-section and formed with longitudinal serrations on its spindle-engaging face; a set-screw for setting up the movable spindlegripping portion of the locking collar; and said locking collar formed with an integral locking linger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inclines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve.
9. A chuck for paper roll comprising a shaft, a set collar adjustably mounted on one end thereof and provided with a tapered sleeve adapted to be inserted in one end of the core of the paper roll; an expansion sleeve mounted on the opposite end of the spindle and formed with peripheral conical surfaces arranged in steps, and also formed with a cam head having opposite inclines, and a stop at the highest point of such inclines; segmental chuck jaws mounted on the expansion sleeve and adapted to be inserted in the opposite end of the core of the paper roll; said segmental chuck jaws being formed on their inner faces with stepped bevel surfaces corresponding with said conical steps of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar mounted on the spindle in front of the cam face of the expansion sleeve, the eye of said collar convexed in cross section; the spindle-engaging surfaces of the collar being formed with longitudinal serrations; said collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to slide on said inclines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve; and a set-screw for clamping said collar to the spindle.

A chuck for paper roll comprising a shaft, a set collar adj ustably mounted on one end thereof and provided with a tapered sleeve adapted to be inserted in one end of the core of the paper roll; an expansion sleeve mounted on the opposite end of the spindle and formed with peripheral conical surfaces arranged in steps, and also formed with a cam head having opposite inclines, and a stop at the highest point of such in clines; segmental chuck jaws mounted on the expansion sleeve and adapted to be inserted in the opposite end of the core of the paper roll; said segmental chuck jaws being formed on their inner faces with stepped bevel surfaces corresponding with saidconical steps of the expansion sleeve; a locking collar mounted on the spindle in front of the cam face of the expansion sleeve, the eye of said collar convexed in cross section; and said collar formed with a movable spindle-gripping piece in its eye, also convexed in cross section; the spindle-engaging surfaces of said movable piece being formed with longitudinal sei-rations; said collar formed with an integral locking finger the finger the extremity of which is adapted to said inclines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve; and a set-screw for clamping said movable piece of the collar to the spindle.

In a chuck for paper roll, the combi nation with a spindle and a chuck thereon mounted comprising a sleeve formed with a wedge-like periphery, segmental chuck jaws mounted on said sleeve and expanded thereby, and said sleeve also made with a eam head having opposite inelines; a looking collar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed Convex in cross section; the bearing` Vface of the eye of the collar being' made With longitudinal serrations; means for positively Clamping said loeliing collar to the spindle; and said locking Collar formed with an integral looking1 linger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inelines of the Cain head of the expansion sleeve.

In a eliuek 'lor paper roll, the Combination With a spindle and a eliuel thereon mounted Comprising a sleeve formed with a Wedgedile periphery, segmental chuck jaws mounted on said sleeve .and expanded thereby, and said sleeve also made With a Cam head having opposite inelines; a looking, eollar adapted to be mounted on the spindle, the eye of said collar being formed convex in Cross section; the bearing face of the eye oi the collar being made with longitudinal serrations; a set-screw for clamping said locking collar to the spindle; and said loelv ing collar formed with an integral locking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inelines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve.
13. ln a chuck for paper roll, the eombination with a spindle and a Chuck thereon mounted comprising a sleeve formed with a Wedge-like periphery, segmental chuck jaws mounted on said sleeve and expanded thereby, and said sleeve also made With a cam head having opposite inelines; a looking' eollar adapted to be mounted on the Spindle, the eye of said Collar being formed Convex in cross section and having a movable spindie-gripping` portion, also made convex in Cross section and formed With longitudinal serrations on its spindle-engaging face; a set-screw for setting` up the movable spindlegripping portion of the looking' collar; and said lookingcollar formed with an integral looking finger the extremity of which is adapted to bear and slide on said inolines of the cam head of the expansion sleeve.
