Application filed December 22, 1910. Serial No. 598,843.
To all whom 'it may concern: l
le, it known that I. Riemann T. lliixx. a citizen ot the United States, and resident l oi tllilitondale, county ot' Essex, Statefrtl 'Cit Massachusetts, have invented an ln1provement in Apparatus tor Grinding Blades, ot which the l'ollowingr descrilition, in eonneetion with the aeeompanying drawing. is a specification, like letters on the drawingi representing' likeparts. This invention has for its objectl the produetion ot" apparatus particularly adapted tor grinding with rapidity1 and itiieiency safety-razor blades made ot' thin plate metal and which must be accurately `ground on oppostte sides to secure the desired cuttingd @da ln `my present invention the blade to be `ground is clamped in a sel'l-centeri'nel bladeholder and one side ot the blade is sub-`1 jected to the action ol a rotatingr and elongated grinder. a relative movtanent o'l the blade and grinder axially beiner ell'ectedl automatically so that the length ot the. grinder is t 'aversed by the blade, and at the end ot the traverse the blade is removed autonm-titailly t'rom contact with the grinder and the traverse movement is stopped automatieally. The operator thereupon returns the parts to startingr position. reverses the l blade-holder to present the other side ot the l l blade, to th\ aetion otE the grinder. and the presentation ot the. blade to the Agrindery e'tiieets simultaneously the starting ollv thel traverse. ln order to seeureia very uub form and even grinding action the lgrinder is constructed in a peouliar manner, to be deseribed, with other novel 'leatures ol the l, invention, in the subjoined specification and mirtioularly pointed ont in the followingl claims, and it will be apparent hereinafter l that certain 'Features ot the invention arel adapted for grinding variouskimlsol' blades. l Figure l is a top plan View ol a lgrindingr apparatus embodying my invention. with!` the parts in operative position aml ready to l begin the 2grinding` ot a blade: Fifi. l is a l 'front ele f'atiou ot the. apparatus shown in i Fig'. l Fifi'. B is an enlarged transverse seci tional ,v-iew taken ou the line iwl, ltig'. 2. l .lookinfg' toward the lett; Fin. -l is a similar 'viewplalso enlarged. but with the earrier tor the bladediolder swunp; baek to ino )erative position and disconnected :troni t-lie feedl removed from its Carr i sections mechanism, the blade holder having been r; F 1g. 5 .ist a longitudinal section ot the grinder, the shaft or arbor therefor being shown in elevation;
ltg. bis an enlarged top plan View of the blade-holder with a blade clamped therein; Fig. 7 is a partial sectional view thereof taken on the line 7--7, Fig. ('3; Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross-section of.' a blade after it has been ground; Fig. 9 is a detail, prin eipally in section, of the yielding and adju'stable part of the connect-ion between the rockiitg carrier and the' follower, to be rejlerred to hereinafter.
The working parte' ot the apparatus are sustained by parallel and upright end trames l, l, having' each a broad, flat foot 2 in praetiee bolted at 3 to a bench, table or other suitable support Ll. rlhe rear portions ot' said trames are provided near their npper ends with like bearing boxes 5 having detathableeaps G, in which boxes are ro ta tably mounted the journals 7 otl a grinder sha'lt. S, shown separately in Fig. 5, the shatt preferably being' somewhat larger in diameter than the journals. as Shown. At one ond said Sha'l't has a {iXed annular en largement or shoulder 9 and the other end el thesha'ttis threaded at l()` :tor the reception ot' a clamping` eollar Ztl, and between the shoulder and eollar a series of circular disks or anuuli 1Q o't' abrasive material are strun; v in axial alinement side by side., to present a continuous elongated grinding iair'taee. 'l`he grinder herein shown is thus ia de up o'lia pluralit'y o-'l relatively narrow or menilnrs, all oi"-` wbieh are elauxped serurely to each other and to the shatt tl between the shoulder t) and Collar 11 when' the latter is set up tightly.
ln practice l ha ve, Yfound that it is praotieally impossible to provide a single section grinder ot' any material length withoutnumereais hard spots disposed at irregular intervals. and such hard spot-s result in an imperfect and irregular grinding action. This is particularly objectionable in grind ing small and thin blades, sut-.h as safetyravlor blades, which require a. very uniform grinding to secure the best results. l have Afound. however, that by making the grinder ot a series of annular sections or disks, relaf tivel narrow. and damping them. together side by side, eeeure very great urti pulley formity of grinding action7 the liarespnts in the abrasive material being reduced te a nuniinuin, Aand it is also very inueh less expensive te Inale the narrow disks accurately :ind uniform than to attempt the nninutlieture et e long., single section ginder. annuli are niade of any suitable abrasive materiel, such ns Carborunduni7 cerunduin,
or the like, and l prefer te maire the un' nnli at one end ol" the series eenienfliat than these. e the opposite end, in
' initial or rough grinding may by the coareer nieterilil. in Figs. be noted that the nnnuli rght hand end of the grinder are onsiderulily n* der than these indicated by the iinishing end et the grinder e -d es they are inede er' the finer abrasive imiteriel ei belt, notshown) applied 'te a le-, 'l nd 2, aitaclied te ene or the Jeurnals Y projecting beyond. its beering feos siiewn et the rieht hand end of the apparatus, the particular inode ot al,-

Byfincreasing or decreasing the number of Weights the pressure to which the blade is subjected can be varied :is muy be necessary.
TheA ineens for holding the binde to be ground, and for connecting it with the rock shaft 27, Wit-h the ineens for controlling and eli'ecting nio'reinent f the letter by the feed screw will' noi' be described.
A carrier' is herein shown :is :i longitudinally split arm 34C extended radially from the roclr-sliaf 2T and provided with a bifurcated hub through -which the shaft extends, set-screws 36 Serving to rigidly/attach the hub and shaft to move as e unit, The carrier has an upturned handle BZhy means of which said carrier end attached shaft een be turned toward or from the grinder or moved le'ingitudinally in parellelismftherewith. The splity rear end of the Carrier has a radial cylindrical recess 38 to receive the tubular she.nlr39, see dotted lines Figs. 3 and of a block '40 depending below theA carrier and carrying on its rontward face e' roll ill., for purpose to be described. A
screw ll-Q"` serves te clamp 'the split ends of I the ernrier securely upon the sluink 39, thereby neldi'ng lelie shank end block l0 rigidly- 'enlarged to form a tubular boss 63, having its bore internally enlarged at 6e, Fig. 9, and threaded to receive an adjusting screw Gieounterbored at, its inner end at 6G. .A
plunger (57 is slidabl f mounted in and r0- .t c: d
jects from the rear end of the boss 63 and has an attached stem 68 which passes through the adjusting screw 65, a collar 69 being pinned to the outer end of the stemt Between the plunger 67 and the bottom of the counterbore (i6 is inserted a spiral spring w 70 coiledfaround the stem of the plunger and'ten-ding always to project the plunger, such tendency being restricted by they collar 69,"as in Fig, 4. Upon the underside of the rocking carrier 34 I form an abutment 7l which engages said plungerA when the carrier is swung into operativen position, as in 'l Fig. 3, the pressure of the weights 32 being' vtransmitted through the rock-shaft 27 and carrier abutment to the plunger', compressthe feed-screw 23.
ing the spring and forcing the follower 60 forward into operative engagement with rl`hus while there is a positive pressure exerted by the :weights 32 to hold the blade 46 against the grinder during the traverse of the blade effected automatically by cooperation of the rotating feed-screw with the follower the said follower and feed-screw will he held yieldingly in engagement through the spring 7 O, giving .the threads on said parts an opportunity to readily and easily inter-mesh when the follower is moved to operative position.
rlhe carrier, the blade-holder, and the rockshaft 27 are fed bodily lengthwise of the grinder by the feeding means, so that the blade is caused to traverse the surface of the rotating grinder from its left hand end, Figs. 1 and 2, to 'itsv rightl hand end, to grind one of the bevels on the edge of the blade. When suchA traverse is completed the blade is disengaged automatically from the grinder, and this is effected by a camV 72 .bolted to the right hand frame 1, Figs.`1
and 2, and extended in the path of the roll y el on the carrier block 40, said roll traveling up the inclined face of the cam and swinging the carrier upward.y As the carrier isV thus raised the abutment 71 is retracted from the plunger and the spring 70 expands, while the counterweight 62 is free to act and swings the'follower arm ,59 rearward, disengaging the follower GO from the feedscrew By the automatic disengagement of the carrier from the feeding means when the grinding traverse is completed' the blade sustaining instrumentality is brought to rest, andY while the grinder and the feed-screw continue to rotate they will not perform any work, so that an attendant can lool: after a l number of machines, going from v'one to another. When the grinding traverse of the blade `is completed as described the attendant l grasps the handle 37 and swings the carrier Locas?? and connected parts into the position shown in Fig. 4, the edge 73 of the carrier hubengaging the top of the extension 61 and mving the follower arm 59 back against' ahorizontal stop rod 74 fiXedly attached at its ends to the end frames `1. Now the rockshaft 27 can be moved manually to the left,
sliding in its bearings 21 and carrying with' it the various parts connected therewith until the lefthand stop collar 28 engages the left hand bearing 21, Figs. 1 and 2, the carrier 34- now being in the proper place longitudinally of the grinder to begin another grinding traverse. Bnring the manually effected return traverse just describedthe lstop rod 74 serves also as a guide and the weights 32 maintain'the carrier and connected parts in lthe relative position shown in Fig. 4l. Be-
`with is suicient to form the bevels 75, 76,
Fig. 8,011 the opposite sides of the blade,
but`if necessary the grinding traverse'for either' or both sides of a blade can befreeated as often as required. When a blade nas been ground the attendant removes the"- blade-holder from the vcarrier and inserts another having Van unground blade, and the operation is continued with all of the maohines of the group of which theattendant has charge.
By constant use the grinder wears and thus decreases in diameter,l permitting the carrier to approach the axis of rotatio-in 0f the grinder by small amounts, and this re- Aquires vadjustment at times of the plunger spring 7 O, such adjustment being effected' by turning the screw G5 into or out of the boss (S3, to increase or decrease the tension of the spring as may be necessary. When'the stem ,48 has been adjusted in the head of the gblade-holder so that the annular groove 50 is at a. certain distance from the edge of the- ,blade when clamped in the holder the latter may'be used not only in the grinding opera; tion, but in finishing operations carried out by other apparatus, and it is notnecessary to disturb such adjustment of the stem when the diameter of the-grinder diminishes by use.
By temporarily loosening t-he clamping screwflQx the shank of the block 40 can bel adjusted radially in the carrier 34 so that when the stein is inserted in the seat 43 the edge of a blade in the holder will be applied liti what l claim as new and desire to seen re hy Letters Patent, is:
