.means of clay or the like, while the lower openings 23 between the retorts 2l and the bricks forming the bttom 5, and thespaces 33 and 33a formed between the caps 28 and Q9 and the iron foundation 35 are filled in with clay or the like. The conical opening 3G in the tire clay cap 28 and the central opening 30 in the cap Q9 are normally plugged with clay or the like but serve for the discharge of the ash upon removing the plug: It will thus be seen that the caps do not requireto be removed to discharge the retorts.
From the description and drawings it will be. readily seen that the retorts may be inserted through the openings 22 in the arch 4 of the furnace and that they may be readily :removed from the lower furnace by swinging out the members 31 and removing the caps Q8 and 29. It will also be seen that the retorts pass their whole length entirely freely through the furnace there being no brick work projecting in close proximity thereto so that the hot gases uniformly surround the retorts and thereby enable uniform reduction of the ore in the retorts to take place. It will also be seen that the retorts may be readily connected inv pairs and thus two pairs of retorts may be arranged in the saiie line transversely of the furnace.
The iron plates 35 forming the foundation' for the furnace bottom are supported by the iron beams 34 which are in turn mounted upon iron st.=.ndardsl37 standing upon any-suitable foundation.

A furnace for extracting zinc from zinc ores comprising a chamber to which the hot 'gases are admitted, the top and bottom of said chamber being constructed of fire-brick having cylindrical openings therein, vertical cylindrical retorts in said chamber and passing through said openings, means for supporting said retorts and means whereby said retorts may be removed from below said chamber.

A furnace for extracting Zinc from Zinc orcs comprising a chambeiff to which the hot gases are admitted, vertical retorts in said chamber, perforated caps adapted to'close the bottom of said retorts and to support the same, and means for temporarily supporting said caps, said caps being adapted to be filled to retain the charge in the retorts and being adapted to enable said retorts to be discharged on removing said filling, whereby the removal of the caps on discharging the retorts is rendered unnecessary.

A furnace for extracting zinc from zinc ores comprising a chamber having openings in the bottom thereof and to which hot gases areadmitted, vertical retorts in said chamber and passing through said openings, caps adapted to 'close the bottom of said retorts and to support the same, members supporting said caps and beams supporting the bottom of said chamber and to which said members are pivoted.

6. A furnace for extracting zinc from zinc ores comprising a chamber having openings in the top and bottom thereof and to which `hot gases are admitted, vertical retorts'in said chamber and passing through said openings so as to be capable of insertion from above the furnace, means for supporting said retorts so to enable the same to be removed from below the furnace, connectionsbetween said retorts and above thefchamb'er for col' lecting the vapors from the retorts and outlets in communication with said connections.
