To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs STREBEL, a citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State 01'' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that kind of dies which are provided with means for receiving and supporting the article or blank to be pressed by the die; such for instance as are used on bottling machines for pressing flanged sealing caps on the bottles. Heretofore these dies have been constructed with spring hooks for holding theflanged cap in suspension in front of the mouth of the die. There are some practical objections to the use of such spring hooks.
My invention consists of a die constructed with an unyielding extension large enough interiorily to receive the article or blank to be operated on, and having an interior bead around its mouth to support the article or blank after it has been sprung into the beaded extension.
While my invention may be embodied in other dies its primary object is to improve the dies used for pressing flanged sealing caps on bottles.
Figure 1 of the drawing illustrates my improved bottle capping die in axial section showing a sealing cap in position in the extension. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of die and extension omitting the cap. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line w-00 of Fig. 1 omitting the cap.
'The die 1 and the cap holding extension 2 constitute a single piece of metal, the interior diameter of the extension being a trifle larger than the extreme diameter of the flange of the sealing cap 3. A slight interior bed 1 is formed around the mouth of the extension, flaring outwardly. The flange of the sealing cap on pressing it into the extension past the bead is slightly contracted but at once expands again after it has passed the bead, and is then supported thereon accurately centered with the die. In other words the flanged sealing cap is sprung into the unyielding extension of the die. It requires but little force to effect this with a properly constructed die; so that it can be readily done manually on toot-power machines, as well as automatically on power-driven machines.
I claim A die constructed with an unyielding centering extension having an interior bead around its mouth as described so that the article to be operated on may be sprung past the bead and then supported thereon, substantially as hereinbettore set forth.
