Be it known that l, .lcslcrn Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-ing-Machines,' of which the following is a specification, those skilled in die art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisl invention relates to machines for casting small articles of various kinds and classes, of metal, and the object thereof is to provide an improved machine of this class which is simple in construction and eticient in operation, and which may he conveniently manipulated; a further object being to promachines having a melting pot construction consisting of inner and outer members, the inner member being provided with a discharge passage for the molten metal, and being also provided with a cylinder and piston for forcing said molten metal through said passage, the bottom of the inner member of the melting pot and the bottom portion of the said discharge passage being always, when the-machine is in operation, inclosed by as well as filled with molten metal whereby the metal discharged in the operation of forming castings is always retained at a proper temperature, and with these and other objects in View the invention consists in a machine of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the practice of my invention I provide a furnace a composed in the form of construction shown of an outer metallic wall or casing a2, having an inner lining a3 of tire brick or other suitable material, and the furnace a. is supported on legs a". Within and resting on the bottom of thc furnace chamber a is a 'gas and air burner b, with which is connected a Bunsen burner device b2 for supplying gas and air to said burner, and it will'be understood that the burner b may be of any desired construction and any suitable means may be provided for supplying the same with gas and. air or other combustion medium.
The front wall of the furnacr` casing a2 extends upwardly only to the point a", and said furnace is open at the top, andset thereinto is a main melting pot c, thefront wall of which rests on the front wall of the furnace casing a2 at a. and extends upwardly only to the point c". This machine is particularly designed for casting various articles from what are known as soft or comparatively soft metal which will melt quicker than steel or cast iron. and
in practice the metal or metals to be molded and from which the castings are to be made are placed in the main melting pot cv and the bottom of the burner is ignited. The molten metal, as 'will be, understood passes into the cylinder d2 through the opening g and fills the supplemental pot (l, and said cylinder and the discharge, or discharge tube d, up to the opening g. At this stage of the procedure the cross head 0 andmold jaw 7; connected therewith being in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cross head j and mold jaw y; are also moved in the positiou'shown in said figures by means of the arm jg, and there is a continuous passage 'from the discharge 1? of the pot f into the casting chamber or chambers r. The piston f/ is then. forced downwardly by means of the arm j' and the pressure of said piston on the molten metal in the pot- (l forces said metal up through the discharge (Z3 and through the nozzle (i7, and into the casting chambers 1' in the jaws y), andthe said molten metal fills said chambers. The lever n, is then moved backwardly and the cut-olf plunger 'm7 is forced backwardly through the lnold jaws y), and into and through the nozzle ([7, and all surplusmolten metal is cut ofl' and forced back through said parts,
and into the discharge Z3 of the pot (I a-nd flows downwardly into said pot and this keeps all the molten metal in proper condi` tion for a re-operation of the plunger y/ and the making of new castmgs. At the end of the above described operation the arm j2 of tlie shaft j is moved forwardly and the cross head f5 and its mold jaw 11 are moved into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the castings dropout of the casting chambers 'r and fall into a suitable receptacle provided therefor, and this operation may be continued as longas desired or unt-il it becomes necessary to again ll the main melting pot with metal.
It will be observed that the supplemental pot is, entirely within the main pot n as is also the discharge tube or passage' d, and with this construction the molten metal in said parts is kept in proper condition for casting at all times and by reason of theop- `eration of the cut-otf plunger mi as herein shown and described. all surplusage of metal at each casting operation is forced into the said discharge i and flows back down into the pot r/ and mingles with the body of molten metal therein.

Although I have shown and described the cross heads 0 and 7'5, and the mold jaws ny as .formed separately and connected it will be apparent vthat this method of connecting said parts isnot absolutely essential, and said parts may be formed integrally if desired; and although l have shown and described the main melting pot c and supplemental pot (Z as formed separately it Wl also be apparent that this method of nstrueting said parts is not absolutely essential and said parts may be formed integrally if desired. 1. ln a casting machine, of the class described. a lnrnace.provided with a projecting discharge nozzle, ay frame in front. of said nozzle, shafts vmounted transversely of said frame and adjustable toward and from the furnace. mold jaws supported in front of said nozzle, and movable toward andfrom the same, devices connecting said mold jaws with said shafts, a eut-ofl` plunger movable provided with a central passage adapted to register with said nozzle; devices mounted in said frame for holding said mold jaw in connection with said nozzle and in contact wit-h said water jacket and whereby said mold jaw may be moved toward and from said nozzle, another mold jaw movable to- 'ard and from the first named mold jaw and provided with a: central passage corresponding with the central passage in first named mold jaw; devices mounted in said frame and in operative connection with the last named mold jaw for moving said jaw forwardlv and backward] f' and' for holding the same in connection with the first named mold jaw, said mold jaws being provided in their adjacent faces with mold chambers in connection with the passages therein. a plunger movable forwardly and l'mekwardlj.7 through the central l'iassages in said` mold jaws when the latter are in their operative position and into said nozzle and means for operating said plunger.
3. ln a casting machine, a furnace pro-Y vided with a'projeoting nozzle, a frame mounted in front of said 'furnace and connected therewith, mold jaws supported in front of said nozzle and movable toward and from the same and provided with cen-4 tral passages adapted to yregister therewith; a plunger movable forwardly and backwardly through the central passage in said mold jaws and into said nozzle; and operative devices mounted centrally of said frame and in connection with said plunger. ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my namein presence of the subscribing witnesses this 31st day of December, 1910.
