The operation of our device is as follows. When access with a slice bar is desired, the
door 5 is swung open and the orifice 3 is ex-' posed, thus permitting of convenient manipulation of the bar. At other times the door 5 is kept closed against late 2. It is evident that our invention presents a number of novel advantages, among which may be mentioned the thorough heating of the air before its introduction of the same into the combustion chamber, its introduc tion at the bottom where it is needed to promote combustion, and the ability of'regulat ing the quantity or cutting oif entire the air admitted. Also the provision of convenient -means for gaining access to'the com bustion chamber with a slice bar' or other tool without injury to the furnace wall and without requiring an open orifice which To admit air through prevent the burnchamber or permit the escape" of heat therefrom.
