Be it known that I, PETER GoBRncH'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Norwood, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Short Rails for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to short-rails for bedsteads, and has for an object to produce a short-rail for bedsteads which is capable of securing the head and foot portions of metal or other beds together, for the purpose of display, and which is also capable of being employed as a handle in moving the head and foot portions, after they have been secured together.

A further object is to produce a short-rail for bedsteads which may be easily and quickly secured in place, and which is simple and cheap to manufacture.

These and other objects I attain by means of a short-rail embodying the features herein described, and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this application and forming a part thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of the head and foot portions of a bedstead, secured together by means of a short-rail embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and illustrates the manner in which a short-rail embodying my invention is secured to the rail support lugs of a bedstead. Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of the short-rail shown in Fig. 2, and is shown in connection with a section of a bed post, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The short-rail illustrated as an embodiment of my invention consists of a rod 4, provided at its opposite ends with right and left hand screw threads, a handle 5 mountedon the rod 4, nuts 6 secured onto the ends of the rod 4, and hangers 7, each of which is mounted on the rod, between one end of the handle 5 and the adjacent nut 6. The handle shown is very similar to the usual form of turn buckle, and consists of enlarged end portions, which are provided with flat faces 8, extending at right angles to the rod 4, and which are secured together by means of integrally formed intermediate ribs. The intermediate portion of the rod 4, between the threaded ends, is preferably square, and axially alined square openings 10 are provided in the end portions of the handle 5,

and are adapted to receive the rod 4. With this construction the handle may be remployed in turning the rod and drawing up and loosening the nuts 6, as will -hereinafter be described.

Each hanger 7 illustrated, consists of a short angle iron, one leg of which is provided with an elongated slot 11, through which the rod 4 extends. The other leg of each hanger is adapted to engage the lower face of the rail support lug of the bed, and to support the leg when the rail is employed as a handle in moving the bedstead.

The head and foot portions 12 and 13 of the bed illustrated are each provided with ordinary forms of rail support lugs 14, which are provided with the usual vertically extending undercut or dove-tailed slots 15, adapted to receive the ends of the bed rails.

In securing the short-rail, illustrated, in place on the head and foot portions 12 and 13, the bolts 6, located at the opposite ends of the rod 4, are introduced int'o the lower ends of the undercut portions of the slots 15 in the head and foot support lugs. The hangers are moved so that they are located between the ends of the handle 5 and the slotted faces of the lugs 14; the handle is then moved upwardly, so as to move the nuts into the slots 15, and so as to bring the supporting lug of each hanger into contact with the lower face of the adjacent lug 14. The handle 5 is then turned so as to draw up the nuts 6 and clamp the rail in place on the head and foot rail support lugs, by drawing the slotted faces of the lugs into engagement with the slotted legs of the hangers, which are forced into contact with the end faces 8 of the handle 5. The bolts 6 are of such size that they fit easily into the undercut portion of the slots, but are prevented from turning while in the slots. With this arrangement, the short-rail may be quickly secured in place, and will provide means for holding the head and foot portions of the bedstead in place, for display purposes, and also may be employed as a handle for moving the bedstead.

In the drawings, I have shown the hangers provided with elongated slots 11, so that the short-rail may be adjusted to various sizes ofv rail supporting lugs. The rod 4 may be moved to such a position relative to the hangers, that it will engage the upper ends of the slots 11, and in this manner positively support the hanger, or the frictional grip between the ends 8, and the slotted faces of the rail support lugs may be relied upon to hold the hangers in place, and to support them while the rail is being employed in moving the bedstead.

Vhen it is desired to remove the shortrails from the head and foot portions of the bed, the handle 5 is turned, so that the nuts 6 are screwed outwardly on the rod. This releases the rail and it may be easily removed by moving the handle downwardly, so that the, nuts 6 are withdrawn from the lower end of the slots 15. While the shortrail is in place, the rod l extends through the narrower portion of the slots l5 and acts as a tension member in drawing the lugs 14: together, and the handle 5, which is employed in tightening the nuts 6, acts as a compression member, against which the slotted faces of the hangers 7 are forced by the lugs 14.

Vhile I have shown an embodiment of my invention which is adapted to be employed in connection with metal bedsteads, it will be apparent that by properly proportio-ning the parts, it may be employed in a similar manner in securing the head and foot boards of wooden bedsteads together, for displayl purposes.

, What I claim is l. A short-rail for bedsteads comprising a rod provided at its ends with oppositely cut screw threads, nuts screwed onto the ends of the rod and adapted to envage rail supporting slots of the head and foot portions of the bedst'ead, a handle located on the rod between the nuts `for turning the rod and changing the position of the nuts on the rod and adapted to act as a compression member between the head and :toot portions.

2. A short-rail for bedsteads comprising a rod provided at its ends with oppositely cut screw threads, a nut screwed onto each end of said rod, a handle mounted on said rod between said nuts, and a hanger located on said rod at each end of said rod and between it and the adjacent nut.

3. In combination with the rail supporting lugs of the head and foot portions of a bedstead, a short-rail comprising a tension member adapted to project into rail supporting slots of adjacent supporting lugs, means mounted on said member for engaging said slots, and a member mounted on said tension member for engaging the slotted faces of said lugs and for actuating said means, and hangers mounted on said tension member for supporting said lugs.

4. In combination with the rail supporting lugs of the head and foot portions of a bedstead, a short-rail comprising a rod, means mounted on the rod near its ends for engaging the rail supporting slots of said lugs, a handle mounted on the rod, and a hanger located on each end of said rod and mounted on said rod for supporting the adjacent rail supporting lugs.
