To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, GRANT MCKINNEY,
a citizenof the United States, residing at Lake Carrier, in the county of 'Panola and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsi'n Saw- Handles, of which the following is a' specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings. v
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in saw handles and more particularly to handles for saws of that character commonly used in felling trees, the invention havingfor its primary object the provision of a handle which may be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the end of the saw blade. I
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a main handle and means carried thereby for attachment to the saw blade, a supplementary handle, and means for securing the supplementary handle to the main handle, said securing means 00- acting with the attaching means carried by the main handle to preventloosening of the main handle from the saw blade and also to.
retainsaid handles in their assembled condition.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a main handle and means adjustable therein for attaching the same to a saw blade, a supplementary handle extending at right angles to the main handle, a bolt to connect said handles together, said attaching means in the main handle engaging said bolt and holding the same-against turning movement to prevent loosening of the supplementary handle.
WVith'the above-and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a port-lon of a saw blade showing my improved handle attached to one end thereof, said handle being:
illustrated in section; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 isa section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of theattaching member.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 5 designates a fragment a saw blade of that character commonly employed 111 the felling of trees. To, this blade at each end thereof a suitable operating handle is attached, and the present invention resides in the provlsion of such a handle which may be easily and quickly attached to, or removed from the blade, the attaching means prdvidmg an extremely rigid connection so that the saw may be freely manipulated-without liability of accidental detachment of the handle therefrom. .VVith the above end .in'view, I provide the main *handlefi which extends laterally from the saw blade in the plane thereof and is formed of wood of suitable character, To one end of this wood handle, a metal saw engaging member '7 is secured, said membercomprising the spaced arms 8 which engage upon opposite sides of the handle 6 and are rigidly secured thereto by means of suitable screws 9. These arms are integrally connected at their outer ends as indicated :at 10, such integral connecting portion being provided with a longitudinal opening-11 therethrough. The member 7 is also provided in its outer end with a groove or channel 12 inwhich the back edge of the; saw blade 5 is adapted to be positioned. The saw blade is rigidly retained inthe slot 12 by means ofthe attaching member 13 which is adjustably arranged in the handle 6. The 'member 13, which is shown in detail in Fig. 4, is formed from a single length of heavy wire which is slightly resilient. The .ends of this wire are welded together to form a solid cylindrical shank 14 and from this shank the wire gradually diverges to provide the spaced portions 15. These spaced portions of the wire are movable in a longitudinal bore 16 formed in the handle 6 said bore being slightly. flared from its inner to its outer end as clearly shown in Fig.1. This bore 16 is of rectangular form in cross section and with the opposite side walls thereof, the spaced wires 15 engage as will be more fully disclosed in the following description. The spaced wires 15 extend between the arms 8 of the members 7 and are brought together "and twisted upon them selves as indicated at 17, such twisted portions of the wire being disposed in the opening 11 whichis provided in the connecting portions 10 of the outer ends of said arms. Beyond the twist 17 of the wire, the same formed into a loop 18 which is disposed a plane atright angles to the spaced portions 15 of the wire.

In this loop the end ofthe saw blade 5 is adapted to be received, said loop engaging the forward edge of the saw blade which is preferably notched to receive the same, said notch'being provided therein by means of a file or other suitable instru 'ment;
The saw blade is rigidly secured in the groove or channel 12 in the end of the member 7 by means of a nut 19 which is threaded upon the shank-l tof the attaching member and is disposed'in anope'ning 20 in the han-' dle 6. This nut engages one of the walls of said opening and as it is turned therein, the shank 14 is drawn through the handle and into a cylindricalsocket or recess 21 provided therein to receive the same. It will be obvious that as the nut 19 is turned, the attaching member 5' will be drawn into the bore 16 of thehandle andthe loop 18- of said member will bind the saw blade in.

In order to provide means whereby the saw blade may be conveniently manipulated, a supplementary handle 22 is secured to the main handle adjacent the blade of the saw. In the use of the saw, this supplementary handle depends from the main handle 6 and is adapted to be firmly grasped .by the operator.
A-bolt- 23 extends" vertically through the- .main handle 6, in a planeat right angles to the attaching member 13 and is disposed between the spaced wire portions 15 thereof.
' One end of this bolt is provided with the usual head, andupon the other end thereof I a nut 24. is threaded, said nut engaging the endof the .supplementary handle 22. A' cap 25 is threaded upon thelower end of the handle 22 and covers the end of the bolt andsaid nut so as to protect the same and prevent accidental engagement of the nut which mightloosen the same. The upper end of the bolt 23 which passes through the main saw' handle 6 is provided with a fiat should break under the "strains incident to: the use of the saw. Thus it will be seen that face 26, and with this flattened face of the bolt, the opposed teeth 27formed upon the spaced wire portions 15 ofthe attaching member 13 are adapted to engage. The en 'gagement of these, teeth with the flattened face of the bolt. 23 absolutely prevents any turning movement of the bolt which would loosen the nut 24 thereon and also overcomes all possibility of the'detachment of the main handle 6 from the saw blade in the event that the threads upon the shank 14 'or the nut 19 by the cooperation of these parts, each serves to hold the other against movement and retain the main and supplementary han-' dle's. in their assembled condition and prooperating handleto the blade.

The device is comparatively. simple, and may be easily and quickly assembled. and attached .to the blade. .After the handle has once been properly secured on the blade, it requires no further adjustment whatever.

The device is also extremely durable, eflicient in practical operation and may be manufactured at comparatively small cost. I While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the various parts, it-' will be understood that the invention is susceptible of a great number of minor modifications in form and proportion withoutdeparting from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
