Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for As sembling Printed Products, fully described and represented in the followin specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to machines for as sembling printed products.
In an application filed of even date herewith, said application being serially numbered 548,786 there is disclosed a machine for assembling printed products consisting of sheets obtained from a web or webs printed on a high speed web press and other sheets difi'ering from the web sheets either in the character of the paper, or in the character of the printing, or both, and termed, for convenience, inset sheets. The specific machine disclosed in said above application produces a product in which the lnset sheets always form the inside sheets of the product. In the machine disclosed in said application, furthermore, the inset sheets are formed from a multilength sheet which is presented to a cutting device of such a character that the sheets are required to be sto ped during the cutting operation.
t is one of the objects of this invention to produce an improved mechanism for assembling printed products comprisin web sheets and inset sheets, the mechanism eing of such a character that the inset sheets may be placed either inside the web sheets or be tween the web sheets or both inside and between the web sheets.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanism for producin a combined product consisting of web s eets and inset sheets. formed from a multilength sheet, the devices for forwarding the multilength sheets including a cutting mechanism of such a character that the sheets maybe cut on the run.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view the invention consists in certain constructions, and in certain parts, improvements and combinations as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically pointed out.
Referring to the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 illustrates inside elevation in sheet feeding mechar ism. In the ticular machine illustratad, two such which may be those usually employed to forward a plurality of webs printed on a high speed 1printing mac line. In the particular mac ine illustrated, these web forwarding devices are indi ated b the ordinary bending rolls 1 and nipplng rolls 2 commonly used in high speed printing machines. The web or webs forwarded by'the forwarding devices may be severed into sheets in any approved way. In the particular construction shov n, this is eifected by a pair of cutting rolls 2 of the usual type, one of these rolls being p1 ovided with knives 4 and the other with cutti 1g blocks or woods 5, as is usual in such constructions.

The means for operating these rolls is indicated,
but as it is common in the art, a description thereof is unnecessary.
In the particular mac ine illustrated, the inset sheets are .formed from multilength sheets, and in machines in which such sheets 'are fed, mechanism shou id be provided for severing the sheets into 5 ieet lengths. This mechanism, in machines embodying the invention in its best form will be of such a character that the sheets may be cut on the run. While the mechan sin employed may be varied in its characte: in the particular machine illustrated, the severing of the multilength sheets is etfe :ted by cutting cylinders 12, 13, the cylinder 12 carrying the usual knife 14 and the o3 linder 13 the usual coo crating block or wo d 15.

' be varied. As shown, they include a piv oted sheet stop 16 of a usual type mounted on a rock-shaft 17 this stop coiiperating with the drop rolls before referred to to time the sheets. v
Where, as in the particular machine illustrated, the inset sheets are formed from a multilength sheet, and it is desired that the mechanism simultaneously present a number'of inset sheets for assembling with the web sheets, means should be provided for superposing the sheet lengths cut from the multilen h sheet. Mechanism for thus superposing sheets formed from'the multilength sheets may be varied in character, and two constructions for effecting this result are illustrated.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, the sheets after passing between the cutting cylinders 12, 13 are forwarded beneath a guide, as- 18, to a roll 19 provided with a nipping jaw 20 backed up by a spring rod 21 of the usual type. This roll 19 cooperates with a roll 22 provided with the usual tucking blade 23 which inserts the edge of the sheet into the bite of the jaw 20.. To insure that the edge of the sheet gets into the nipping jaw 20, there may be employed a pivoted guide, as 24, hung on a shaft 25 which is operated through an arm 26 by a cam 27 on a shaft 28. With this construction, the lead ing end of the multilength sheet is taken by'the nipping jaw,-the guide 24 being dropped to insure this,and the sheet carried around by the roll 22 At about the time the nipping jaw takes the leading 'end of the multilength sheet, the sheet is severed, and, as the second part-of the sheet comes into proper position, the sheet which has been carried around by the roll 22is laid upon it,'the nipping jaw being actuated to release the sheet. To insure the forwarding of this sheet, after the nipping jaw has released it, 'a roll, as '29, may be employed, this roll being mounted on a shaft '30'hung in arms 31 supported on brackets 32 on standards rising from the frame. When the sheets have been thus superposed, they are, in the particular machine illustrated in this figure, forwarded'by-the rolls 19, 22,'the position of the guide24 being shifted to permit this,into the bite of rolls 34, 35, which deliver the sheets for assemblage with the web sheets formed by the cutting cylinders 3. The roll 35 has cooperating with it a roll, as 36, these rolls operating not only to receive and forward the web sheets which are delivered to them from the cuttin cylinders 3, but also the inset sheets re erred to. The roll 35 is, in the particular machine shown, provided with a cut away part 37, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
In machines embodying the invention in Y its best form, the mechanism for assembling Ithe product will include a sheet receiving cylinder 38 which, as shown, is a three-part collecting cylinder. In the particular construction illustrated, the product is taken by a set of grippers 40, these grippers being I mounted on a shaft 41 provided with an operating arm 42, as usual in gripper con- ;structions, a roll on the arm 42 being arranged to contact at proper times with actuating cams. In the particular construction illustrated, the roll on the arm 42, as I the grippers approach the taking point, contacts with a cam 43 which operates to rock 5 the shaft 41 and open the grippers, so that the product presented to the cylinder may 1 be taken by them.
The holding grippers before referred to are indicated at 44, these grippers belng in turn mounted on a shaft 47 having an op- .erating arm 48 attached thereto. The shaft 45 may have an operating arm for opening the grippers and a spring for'closing them, as common in gripper constructions, the illustration of these parts being omitted in the interest of cleai-ness. The arm 48 carries a roll which contacts with a cam 49 fixed on the frame of the machine. For convenience, this cam may be located at the point at which the sheets are to be finally delivered. With the construction so far described, the grippers 40 take the sheets after they pass between the rolls 35, 36 and carry them on around the cylinder 88, the sheets being laid over the tops of the grippers 44. As the cylinder 38 rotates, the roll on the arm 48 of "the shaft 47 which operates the grippers 44 strikes the cam 49 and withdraws these grippers from under the heads of the sheets whlch have been taken by the grippers 40,

It has heretofore beenstated that the roll. 35 is provided with a cut-out portion 37. In order to give the grippers time to operate between the successive sets of sheets presentedby the rolls 35, 36, it is desirable to space the sheets apart. This may be done by causing the rolls 38, 57 to run at a slightl accelerateds'urface s eed as com-pared wit the rolls 35, 36, and t e cutting away of the roll 35 as indicated at 37 enables the sheets, after being taken by the grippers 40, to be pulled away from the rolls 36, thus spacing the sheets, as indicated in Fig. 1.

What is claimed is 1. The combination with web. forwardingmeans, of devices for severing sheets theref from, inset sheet feeding means, and means forassembling the sheets forwarded by said. inset sheet feeding. means with the web sheets to form a combined roduct which has said inset sheets inside the web sheets, or between the web sheets, or and between the web sheets.
2. The combination with web forwarding both inside ng means, and means for assembling the sheets forwarded by the inset and cover feeding means with the web sheets to form a combined product which has the inset sheets inside the web sheets, or between the web sheets, or both inside and between the web sheets, and has the cover applied to the outside of said sheets. 3. The combination with web' forwarding means, of devices for severing sheets therefrom, inset assembling set sheet I sheet feeding means, means for the sheets forwarded by said ineeding means withthe web shwts "to form a comblned product which has said inset sheets inside the web sheets, or between or both inside and between the web sheets, and devices for stapling the 4. 5. The combinatiqn with web forwarding devices, of devices for cutting sheets from a web or .webs forwarded thereby, intermit-' tently operated inset sheet feeding-means,-

a collecting cylinder to which the various sheets are presented, and means for so controlling the presentation of the inset and as to cause the cylinder to collect a combined product having the cover sheet on the outside, and the inset sheets inside the web sheets, or between the web sheets, or inside and between the web sheets.
6. The combination with web forwarding devices, of devices for cutting sheets from a web or webs forwarded thereby, intermit tently operated inset sheetfeeding means, intermittently operated cover feeding means, a collecting cylinder to which the various sheets are presented, means for so controlling the presentation of-the inset and cover sheets wlth respect to the web sheets as to cause the c linder to collect a combined product having the cover sheet on the outside, and the inset sheets inside the web sheets, or between the web sheets, or inside and between the web sheets, and devices for stapling the combined product.
7. The combination with web feeding devices, of means for severing sheets from a web or webs forwarded thereby, means includinfi timing devices for forwarding and contro ing a multilength sheet, devices for severing said sheet into sheet lengths, a collecting cylinder, and means for intermittently presentin to the collecting cylinder sheets from. the multilength sheet feeding devices simultaneously withthe web sheets.
8. The combination with web feeding de vices, of means for severing sheets from a web or webs forwarded thereby, means includin timing devices for forwarding and contro ling a multilength sheet, devices for severing said sheet into sheet lengths, a colfor intermittently presenting an outside or lecting cylinder, means for intermittently resenting to the collecting cylinder sheets om the multilength sheet feeding devices simultaneously with the web sheets, and means for intermittently presenting an outside or cover sheet to the collecting'cylinder.
9. The combination with web feeding devices, of means for severing sheets from a web or webs forwarded thereby, means includin timing devices for forwarding and contro ling a multilength sheet, devices for severing said sheet into sheet lengths, a collecting cylinder, means for intermittently resenting to the collecting cylinder sheets from the multilength sheet feeding devices simultaneouslywith the web sheets, means cover sheet to the ccllecting cylinder, and devices for stapling tt e combmed product.

The combination with web forwarding means, of device' for severin a sheet or sheets from the we bs forwarde thereby, a collecting cylinder t which the web sheets are delivered, means .ocated on thecollecting cylinder side of tie web sheet path for feeding multilength :heets, and means for severing said mu tilen'gth sheets into sheet lengths while the she ts are in motion, said multilength-sheet feeding means operating to lectin cylinder but si .nultaneously with the web s eets.
