To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAUDEB. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulton, in the county of'Callaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in toys, and has for its object the provision of an interesting and amusing toy for small children which shall present the appearance of an elderly person holding a small child upon his foot and rocking the said child.

The further object of my invention is the provision of an improved toy of this character which shall be simple and inexpensive of construction and which will depend for its operation upon the balancing of certain weights upon opposite sides of a pivot and will thus entirel dispense with s rings, cords or other mec anism which is liable to get out of order.

Other objects and advantages of my improved toy will be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of my claims without departing from or eX- ceeding the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete toy showing the position occupied by the various parts when the toy is not 0 erated. Fig. 2 represents a similar view s owing one of the positions occupied by the parts as the toy is operated. Fig. 3 rep resents a vertical sectional view of my complete toy, and Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of the oscillating leg of the larger figure detached.

. In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the supporting chair of my toy on which rests the body 2 of an elderly gentleman, said body being preferably formed of tin or other sheet met-a1 and being hollow. Pro- 'jecting inward at the neck portion of the said body 2 is a pivot or loop 3 on which is pivotally engaged the eye or loop 4 which is secured to the depending neck portion 5 of the head 6, said head in the drawings being shown as the head of an old man partially bald and being supposed to represent a grandfather. Secured to the lower end of the neck 5 which depends within the' body 2 is the lever arm 7 having on its lower end the weight 8. When in normal position the weight tends to hold the head in upright position, but when desired a slight push given to the h sad will serve to swing the same on its piv otal support, the weight causing the head 0 rock back and forth for a considerable ime before coming to rest in stationary p nsition. The said body 2 has formed thereon the leg 9 which extends to the floor on which the chair 1 rests and is also formed vith the half leg 10 which terminates at the knee of the figure. Depending from till top of the said second leg 10 in the open and thereof is the loop or eye 11 which is er gaged in the second loop or eye 12 carried by the lower portion of the leg 13, said lower portion 13 being thus pivotally :upported within the stationary upper leg portion 10. The foot of the leg 13 is forn ed on top of the instep with the knife ed. ge bearing recess or groove 14, while restin in said bearing portion 14 is the knife edg a pivot portion 15 which is formed between he legs 16 of the second smaller figure 17, :aid second figure being dressed and formei to represent a youngboy, said boy being presumed to be the grandson of the older figure who is being given a ride on the foot of his grandfather.

described, while it is merely necessary to slightly raise or depress the lower leg 13 to set the same rocking, the weight 27 causing this rocking to continue a considerable period of time before the leg willfinally come to rest. As this leg rocks the figure of the boy will be raised and lowered and will consequently through the pivotal securing of-the arms 24; to the stationary arms 22 of the main =figure be rocked back and forth -on its pivot bearing, the weighted lower portions of the legs 16 of the figure of theboy serving to aid in keeping up this rockingand thus-to supplement the rocking tendency of the weight 27 whereby the figure will continue to rock for a considerable period-of time after receiving a slight initial impulse.

From'the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of my improved toy Will'be readily understood, and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, efficient and practically indestructible toy whichboth-on account of'the appearance of the figures and on account of the-novel movement imparted to the figure-of the boy by theswinging of the leg in connection with the movement imparted by the connection of the arms of'the-boy with those of'the-old man will prove very interesting and amusing to small children.

I claim:

.l. A toy,comprising-a figure of an elderly person, said -figure having one of its legs pivot'allysecured, a figure. of aboy mounted on the said leg, and-abalancing weight securedto thepivoted-leg' andmovable within the body of the elderly figure, whereby upon av slight initial impulse the leg and figure of the boy may be caused to rock for a'considerable period.

2. The combination with a large figure having .one of the legs ending at the knee,

said figure being hollow, of a lower leg member pivotally secured interiorly of the end of the shorter end of the figure, a smaller figure mounted upon the .instep portion of the lower leg, a plug fitted into the =-end -of the'said lower leg, and having a rod secured theretoend projecting into the interior of the hollow body, and a weight secured on the end of the rod and of suflicient size to balance the weight of the-smaller figure and of the leg upon which the said figure rests.

3. A-toy, comprising a large figure having an oscillating leg, said leg having a knife will imparta separate oscillatory movement,

to the body of the smaller figure which will rock on i its knife edge pivot.
