vacuum cleaners of the bellows type in which l one of the improvements consists in having -the handles or shafts so off-set or bent that the handle for the left hand bellows is on the right hand side of the machine, and the handle for the right hand bellows is on the left hand side of the machine.
A further improvement in my device consists in the arrangement on the sides of the cleaner between the movable boards of the bellows of a pivoted compensating linkage, whereby the two operating handles are caused to have an equal and simultaneous movement. y
In order that the invention may be the i better understood, drawings are appended in whichi Figure l is afront elevation of apparatus i embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 1s a side elevation with the bellows open. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with the bellows closed.
Referring to the accompanying'drawingal a and b indicate the operating shafts of a bellows form of cleaner, and which shafts are bent as shown so that when attached to the movable members of the bellows b2 and b3 the shafts are crossed and the handle portion of the said shafts are disposed 1n a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the opposite 'movable member to the one to which they are attached. In the apparatus illustrated b* re resents the nozzle which as before is attac ed to a body b through which projects a tube b communicating with the interior of the filter bag bl secured by the body b5 in the lower end of the aparatus. The bellows are formed by the two oards bs, b9, hinged in any suitable manner such that they are air tight to the lower end of the apparatus and provided with valves b1, b through which the air is expelled as the boards are moved iiward. A center chamber is formed by me ins of the inclined fixed boards blz, Z113 in which the aforesaidV bag filter bl is disposed ind valves b, b are provided upon the bc ards to permit the air drawn through the li iter to escape into the bellows when they are expanded.
By means of a construl `tion employed not only is the device as a whole made much stronger and stiffer, but 'he center chamber formed by the boards 1912, 513, just described, forms a convenient receptacle for the bag filter Z.
Instead of employing v ilves o, b, I mayV dispense with the said i alves and provide an inlet valve on tube bs.

I-Iaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that wl lat I claim is:
1. In a vacuum cleai ,er of the bellows type, operating means cc mprising shafts secured to the movable members of thebellows, said shafts being b :nt so that the handle portion of one is up( n the opposite side of 'the machine with reg ard to the member to which it is attached.
2. In a vacuum clear er of the bellows type, operating means c( mprising shafts secured to the movable irembers of the bellows, said shafts being b ant so that the handle portion of one is up( n the oppositeside of the machine with reg ard to the member to which it is attached, ind means connect.- ing the two movable mer ibers of the bellows to insure the equal and opposite movement of the shafts.
3. In a vacuum clea: ier of the bellows type, operating means c( mprising shafts secured to the movable n embers of the bellows, said shafts being b ent so that the handle portion of one is up n the opposite side of the machine with rega rd to the member to Vwhich it is attached, anl means connecting insure the equal and opposite movement of hand in the presence of the two undersigned the shafts, said means oomprslng a lever witnesses.
