HOWARD S. MQMILLIN, 013 ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR T0 METAL SCREEN & COTTAGE 00., OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
PORTABLE COTTAGE.
Patented Nov. 1 1, 1911. Divided and this application filed July 11,
1910. Serial No. 571,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD S. MCMILLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Cottages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knockdown cottage or tent frames, its object being particularly to provide an improved form of clamp for holding together the upper corners of the frame and adjacent portions of the inclined roof, rafters, and consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed, this application being divisonal of my application filed September 20, 1909, Serial Number 518,461.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved corner bracket shown in use; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the blank for forming the main member of the bracket; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the other member of the bracket.
Referring to the drawings A represents the corner uprights of the framework, B the horizontal bars constituting the tops of the side and end walls, and O the inclined raf-' ters for the roof.
My improved bracket is made up of two cooperating members D and E. The member D is of right angle shape in horizontal cross section to fit flat against the outer sides of the upright 4 and the outer faces of the supported corner ends of the horizontal beams B. One side of the bracket member D is formed with an upwardly extending flange 2 having its upper edge inclined to fit underneath, and form a support for, the rafter C. The free side edge 3 of the flange 2 is inturned so that the bottom of said inturned edge 8 will rest upon the top face of the adjacent horizontal beam B with the upper edge of said inturned portion 3 in contact with the underside of the roof rafter. The roof rafter, which is preferably of angle iron, at its lower end receives and rests upon the upper edge of the flange 2, being secured thereto by bolts or other suitable securing means passed through the openings 4 in the bracket and rafter. The bracket member D is similarly secured to the upright A and horizontal beams B. The cooperating plate E of the bracket is shaped to fit closely into the space formed by the two side walls of the bracket and the inturned end 3 of the flange 2, said plate lying flat on the top faces of the beams B. The plate E is secured to the framework by bolts or other suitable securing means passed through openings 1 in the plate and framework.
With the bracket secured in the position shown and the plate E wedged into the space between the side walls of the bracket and inturned end 3 it will be evident that the horizontal beams B, upright A and rafter C will be firmly clamped together and braced against twisting and sagging. The bracket also so supports the members and framework that there is the minimum of strain upon the securing bolts and a framework construction obtained of the strongest and most rigid character.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a collapsible knockdown cottage of the class described, a plurality of wall sections, a sloping roof support, and a bracket overlapping meeting corners of said wall sections and having an upwardly extending flange inclined to correspond with and support said roof support, the free side edge of said flange being inturned underneath said roof support.
2. In a collapsible knockdown cottage of the class described, a plurality of wall sections, a sloping roof support, a bracket overlapping meeting corners of said wall sections and having an upwardly extending flange fitted underneath said roof support, the free side edge of said bracket being inturned underneath said roof support, and
a plate fitted between said flange and inturned edge and the opposite wall of said bracket above said wall sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD S. McMILLIN.
