Description

anni aan.
MYRoN-jr. Boum, or BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
Leners Patent N 100,848,1zataz Maa-h, 15, 1870.
IMPnovnMrzNT IN` CARVING Woon. J
The Schedule referred to these ALettere Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern.- l
Be itgknown that I, MYRON T. BOULT, of rBattle l Greek, in the county .of Calhoun, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Iu1- proveniente Vin Process for Carving and Ornamenting Wood; and do hereby declare that the following isla full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specitication.
The nature of my invention consists in the process of carving and ornamenting upon the surface of wood, `hy means of patterns, forms, or guides, attached to the backof the piece tol be so, ornamented, as will hereafter be more fully set forth and explainedf Figure 1 is a perspective of guide or form which is l to form the patterh.
Figure 2 is a Vplan view of the carving or ornament which has been cut or carved in the surface of the wood.
Letter A represents a board or surface which is to be carved or ornamented from any desired design.
To the back of this sulfa'ce there 'is temporarily attaeheda hoard, B, which has the design eut entirely through its surface, as seen in g.\1,and which is to serve as a guide in moving the surface A against the revolving cutter. This guide may have any kind of a design eutvthrongh it, suitable for table legs, casing over windows, panels, or any ornamental work, so that, by following the model on`Y the hack, and keeping the surface pressed against the cutter, any design may he cnt into it. i
The machine or cutters by which this work is per-` formed may he either vsuch as was patented by me J une 15, 1869, or by any other suitable devices.
I am aware that ymachines for lcarving and ornamenting wood are known, and that suoli machines form the figure or pattern upon the wood by the cutters passk ing through the template, so that the ornamentation and template are on the same'side of the board 1so carved.
My invention dilers vfrom said machines in the fact that hy my process the template is ou the reverse side of the hoardrfrom where the cutters act on the wood.
A pin upon the machiue'is-passed into the template on the hack of the hoard, which acts as a guide-point for the cutters, Vto form the pattern required.
Thus it will be seen that my cutters are perfectly free, and the chips are not liable to choke or obstruct the perfectv action of the cutters.
The method herein described for ornainenting and l carving wood, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my handthis 13th day of November, 1869.
MYRON T. BOULT.
