Description

i Figi Vim @WMM W dem eine @met @twine HORACE BOARDMAN, OF PORT RICHMOND, NEW' YORK.
Letters Patent No. 100,847, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGINE G-OVERNORS.
The Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hennen BOARDMAN, of Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond, inthe State of New York, llave-invented a new and improved Governor; andI do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description of theconstruction `and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specitication, in whichg Figui-e1 is a half' side elevation and half vertical 4 section.
Figure 2, a plan.
Figure 3, atransverse section on the line P Q.
The nature of my invention consists in a new mode of communicating and transmitting or conveying arotary orcircnlar motion by the use ofthe revolving cylinder A,`having a corrugated inside surface, B, the cylinderheads G Cf'` with radial ribs `E, which, when secured to the cylinder A, form a chamber, which' is filled with a uid.
\Vhen the cylinder A is setin motion, the fluid acts as a communicating medinn on the `winged center D,
i and-has a strong tendency to revolve the winged center D in the same direction.
This winged center I) is made fast to the center spindle F, onthe upper end of' which is #a `pnlley, G. This pnlley G has wound around it a cord, which is connected to the valve-gate or other apparatus intended to be regulated; or it may be connected by a "crank-gear or other well-known devices for connecting a governorto its'work.`
The valve or `other apparatus is intended to be weighted open, 4and when the cylinder A is running at a certain speed, the power vcommunicated to the winged center D will balance the weight. Any change from this speed will change theposition ofthe weight, and also' the position of' the connected apparatus in either direction.
The power is applied to the'shaft H, by means of a.' belt or gearing connected to the prime motor, and `transmitted to the cylinder A by means of the mitergears I l and hollow spindle J.
K is the main frame or stand, with its necessary` L is a pivot-plug` screwed into the. lower head O of' cylinder A. This pivot-plug L centers and foi-insa hearing for the lower end of center spindle F, and also has a bearing in the socket M. This socket M is secured to the frame K, and set in its proper place by means of the'binding-nnts N N.
O is a crank made fast to the shaft H, for the purpose of showing the operation of the governor.
lhis governor is intended to be used -to control the speed of a steam-engine, water-wheel, or any other` Witnesses: WM. H. INsLnn, SIDNEY Obcnsnaw.
