EDWARD WILLIAM YOUNG, OF T'Y'IHEBLEY, WIMBORNE, ENGLAND.
SCREW-P-ROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Application filed March 9, 1910. Serial No. 548,186.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM YOUNG, of Tytherley, Wimborne, Dorset, England, civil engineer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw-Propellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention consists in the construction of screw-propellers, the blades of which are formed of arms connected by easily flexible material, the one arm being rigidly attached to the driving shaft and the other attached to a boss or ring capable of re volving on the shaft and controlled by a spring or springs so as to allow the blade of the propeller to take up a varying inclination in relation to the axis of the driving shaft.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a propeller embodying my invention, with means for operating or driving the propeller. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the propeller shaft in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof showing a modified form of ropeller blade. Fig. 4 is a detached detail view of a part of my invention. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of blade shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view thereof.
Fig. l is a side elevation of the propeller, A being the forward arm and B the rearward arm. They are connected b C the flexible material forming the working surface of the blades. The arms A are curved and held to their shape by tension rods which connect their outer ends with a boss D securely fastened to'the shaft E. The arms B are similarly. connected with a ring or boss F which is free to revolve on the shaft E. A coiled spring H is attached by one of its ends to the boss F, and by the other to the boss D through the intermediary of a loose ring I, shown in detail in Fig. 4, furnished with holes for receiving the end of the spring and a bolt for connecting the ring I with the boss D. A means is thereby afi'orded of altering the pressure of the spring on the boss F which by a clutch arrangement is kept pressed, when at rest, against the terminal ca G of the shaft to which G is firmly attac ed but from which it can be removed for repairing purposes.
K is the bearing 'of the shaft E in the structure to be propelled.
Fig. 2 shows an end view of the propeller in action, the dotted lines showing the position B of the rearward arm taken up through the yielding of the spring to the pressure of the fluid medium up on the blades of the propeller.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show respectively the part elevation, the part vertical or oss-section, and the horizontal cross-section of a propeller of this kind for use in wate r. The flexible blade being formed of thin slats of metal L overlapping one another at their edges and hinged at their extremities to the two arms of the propeller.
What I claim as my invention and desire to receive by Letters Patent is-- 1. A propeller wheel comprising in combination, a propeller shaft, a hub rigid thereon, a hub on said shaft havtig free longitudinal and circumferential movement with respect thereto, a compression spring connecting said hubs, arms on said hubs, and flexible blades mounted on said arms.
2. A propeller wheel comprising in combination, a propeller shaft, a hub rigid thereon, a hub on said shaft having free longitudinal and circumferential movement with respect thereto, a compression spring connecting said hubs, arms on said hubs, and bladesmounted on said arms.
3. A propeller wheel comprising 111 combination, a propeller shaft, arms rigidly mounted on said shaft, arms loosely mounted on said shaft and having free longitudinal and circumferential movement with respect thereto, blades connected wiih said arms, and means permitting yielding movement of the loosely mounted arms under the action of water resistance.
4. A propeller wheel comprising in combination, a propeller shaft, arms rigidly mounted on said shaft, arms loosely mounted on said shaft and having free 101 tgitudinal and circumferential movement wlth respect thereto, blades connected wi;h said arms, means permitting yielding movement of the loosely mounted arms under the action of water resistance, and means for altering the compression of saidfirst mentioned means.
5. A propeller wheel comprising in combination, a propeller shaft, a hub ri id thereon, a hub on said shaft having ,ree
longitudinal and circumferential movement with respect thereto, an adjustable collar carried by said first mentioned hub, a compression spring interposed between said 001- lar and said second mentioned hub, arms on said hubs, and flexible blades mounted on said arms.
6. A propeller wheel comprising in combination, a propeller shaft, a hub rigid thereon, a hub on said shaft having free longitudinal and circumferential movement with respect thereto, an adjustable collar carried by said first mentioned hub, a compression spring interposed between said collar and said second mentioned hub, arms on said hubs, and blades mounted on said arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
