Be 1t known that I, ARTHUR F. HALL, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, and
vide a rail joint which will protect the ends of rails.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the rail 5 is provided with shoulders 6, spaced from and disposed below the plane at the bottom 7 of the head 8 of the said rail, there being one of the shoulders 6 at each side of the rail. The tops of the heads 8 are removed at the ends of the rails 10 forming recesses 9. In the web 11 of the rail 5, there are elongated holes 12 and 13, the elongated hole 12 being disposed below the recess 9, while the elongated hole 13 is disposed under the-head 8 at the inner sides of the said recess 9.
The rails-5 are disposed in alinement, and side plates 14 are disposed one at each side ofthe rails, at their neighboring' ends, the
side plates 14 havingy inwardly. disposed shoulders 15 at their upper portions. rfhe tops of the plates 14 engage the shoulders 6, of the rail, and the shoulders 15 of the plates 14 press against the upper portion of tbe web 11 of the rail. The base flanges 16 of the plates 14 rest on the flanges 17 of the rails 5. The base flanges 16 have their lower edges bent downwardly at 18, and lin these lower edges 18 there are recesses 19, in which spikes may be driven.
As best shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings the side plates 14 have shoulders 20, at theirvv ends. There are also holes 21 through theplates 14, which are adapted to-register with the holes l2 and 13 in the webs 11 of the ralls. Saddle members 22 are provided for connecting the heads 8 of the rails, t-he saddle members 22 having central portions 23 which are normally disposed in the recess- 9, as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The saddle members 22 also have depending portions 24, which are disposed against the outer sides of the side plates 14, between the shoulders of the said side plates. There are holes 25` through the depending portions 24, of the saddle members 22, the said holes 25 registering with the central holes 21 in the side plates 14, and also with the holes 12 in the webs 11 of the rails, so that bolts 2G may be inserted therein to hold the saddle members 22, and the side plates 14 in position.
As shown in Fig. 7` of the drawings a rail 27 of standard construction may have the portion above and at the outer sides of the line 28, cutaway, which will permit it to be used with my side plates 24 and saddle member 22. However, I prefer to use the specially constructedv rail shown in Fig. l rof the drawings.
