SCREW-DRIVER.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. LEOPOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
One obj ect of this invention is to construct a screw driver having two hand grips so that each hand can be utilized to rotate the spindle.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction which will be described hereafter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a side view of my improved screw driver; t-he blade being broken away; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3, is a view of the handled end of the screw driver; Fig. 4, is a view of the ratchet mechanism, looking in the direction of the arrow l, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1; Fig. 6, is a sectional view on the line 6 6, Fig. 1; Fig. 7, is a sectional view on the line 7 7, Fig. 1; and Fig. 8, is a perspective view illustrating the parts detached.
A is the spindle of the screw driver, in the present instance, extending throughout the length of the handle and shaped into the usual form at the lower end, as at a.
B and D are the two hand grips separated by a tubular casing C, in which is mounted the ratchet mechanism clearly illustrated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. Mounted in the hand grip B is a metallic bushing B' having -at its lower end ratchet teeth o, which are engaged by the pawls c mounted on a carrier C', secured to the spindle A in the present instance by a key 02, which is made as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, the key also enters a slot in the casing C, confining the easing and the carrier to the spindle. In the grip D is a metallic bushing D', having ratchet teeth Z at its upper end, which are engaged by pawls c' mounted in the carrier C. On the lower end of the bushing D' is a hexagonal collar d', which can be gripped by a wrench, when it is desired to use more power than could be applied with simply the hand grips. TheV bushing B' is prevented from turning in the hand grip B by ribs Zi formed on the bushing, and on the bushing D' are formed ribs cl2, which engage the hand grip D. These ribs cut their way in the walls of the hand grips B and D,

when forced into position, so that when either hand grip is turned, the bushing must turn with it. Ribs Z3 are also formed on the lower end of the bushing D' and these ribs enter keyways in the hexagonal collar CZ', as clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8, so that the bushing` must turn with the collar. These ribs are formed by pinching the metal from the body of the bushings, although they may be formed in a dilferent manner without departing from the essential features of the invention. The spindle is held vertically in the bushings by a collar e, which is forced into a groove a' in the spindle A. The collar is integral and is passed over one .end of the spindle and pressed into the groove, making a rigid and permanent abutment. In the upper end of the spindle is an annular groove a2 in which fits a segmental key f and this key is held in place by a cap F screwed onto the end of the bushing B', as indicated in Fig. 2. When in place, the inner surfacevof this cap rests against the upper end of the spindle A. The pawls c, c are moved into and out of posit-ion by a sliding, shifting plate I, which is notched to release certain of the pawls when the plate is in a given position. This plate and the pawls may be varied without departing from the essential features of the invention. The shifting plate has a pin c', which projects through a slot la in the casing C and mounted between the plate and the casing is a spring z", which tends to hold the plate in position. When the plate is shifted to the central position the four pawls are in engagement with the ratchet teeth, preventing movement of the spindle independently of either hand grip, so that the screw driver can be used as an ordinary screw driver. When the shifting plate is moved to the position illustrated in Fig. l, then one pawl of each set is raised so that on turning the hand grips the spindle is moved continuously in the direction to drive a screw. When the shifter is moved tothe other extreme position, the other pawls are thrown into engagement so that on reciprocating the grips D the spindle will be moved in the reverse direction, so as to retract a screw; the object being to provide a screw driver in which both hands can be used to drive a screw. Heretofore, one hand turned the screw driver, while the other hand acted as a guide.
I claim:
l. The combination in a screw driver, of a carrier mounted thereon, two sets of pawls mounted on the carrier, two hand grips spaced apart by the carrier, ratchet teeth on each hand grip arranged to be engaged by the pawls, whereby the spindle will be moved continuously in one direction on the alternate reciprocation ot the hand grips.
2. rlhe combination ot a spindle, a carrier secured to the spindle, pawls on the carrier, two hand grips spaced apart by the carrieiga bushing secured to each hand grip, ratchet teeth on each bushing, one series of ratchet teeth being engaged by one set ot pawls, and the other series of ratchet teeth being engaged by the other set of pawls, and means tor contining the spindle longitudinally.
3. The combination of a spindle, a carrier secured thereto, two hand grips separated by the carrier, bushings in each hand grip through which the spindle extends, pawl and ratchet mechanism between each hand grip and the bushing, a sleeve on one end ot the carrier adapted to receive a wrench for 'turning the spindle.

The combination of a spindle, a carrier secured to the spindle, a hand grip on the spindle above and below the carrier, said carrier having a bushing, ratchet teeth on the bushing, pawls mounted on the car rier and arranged to engage the ratchet teeth, a collar on the spindle against which the lower bushing rests, said spindle having an annular groove at its upper end, a seg mental key mounted in the groove, and a cap arranged to pass over the key and secured to the bushing, holding the key in position in the groove in the spindle, thus preventing the longitudinal movement of the key' in the bushings.
5. The combination in a screw driver, of a spindle, a carrier secured to the spindle, two hand grips, a bushing in each hand grip, said bushings projecting into the carrier and having teeth on their projecting portions, pawls mounted on the carrier and engaging the teeth, an annular groove in the spindle and an integral ring mounted in the groove and forming the lower stop for the handle, with means at the upper end of the spindle for preventing the upward movenient of the spindle in the bushings.
