:5 y i i1 v UNITED T PAPER GOODS COMPANY, or KENSINGTON'CONNECTICUT, A conrona'rlonon NEW JERSEY.
To all whom 'it may concern' Be it. known that T, HENRY B. CooLnY, a citizen of the United States, andresidentof New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of (ounecticuh-have invented a new and useful T ype-Chase and Form-Cylinder for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a type chase and form cylinder for printing presses with the object in view of providing 'asuhst-antial support for the chase both edgewise and at the back so that the type or furniture may be securely locked in the chase without danger of springing the chase and for the ready removal and replacement of the chase and for holding it securely in position.
The type of cylinder which I have chosen to illustrate my invention is a rota-ry flat bed cylinder and is shown as having two oppositely disposed flat beds separated by cylindrical segments.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure l is a view of the form cylinder in elevation showing the type chases in edge ele. at ion, Fig. 2 is a view taken-in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1, showing a partial plan view of one of the type chases, Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane of the line AA of Fig. 1, showing the chase retaining slides closed, Fig. 4 is a partial section in the same plane showing a chase retaining slide open, Fig. 5 is a view of the same in elevation, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same.
The form cylinder is denoted as a whole. by t. it is provided with two oppositely disposed tlat beds 2 and 3, separated at the periphery of the cylinder by cylindrical seg ments 4 and The type chases to be re.- ccivcd on the beds 9 and 3 are denoted by (3 and 7. respectively. They are quite similar in structure and a description of one will sullice for both. Referring to the cease 6, its end edgesare beveled, as shown at 8 and 9, to lit. and slide in undercut grooves 10 and 11 in the rims at the opposite ends of the cylinder. The rear and front edges of the chase are also beveled, as shown at 12 and 13, to fit the inwardly directed slanting faces of the keepers a t rear and front. The
rear edge 12 of the "chase is recessed at its TYPE-CHASE AnnronM-cYLrNnERFoR PRINTING-PRESYSES,

opposite ends, these recesses being'denoted by 14, 15, to permit thev sliding keepers to he slid into and out of locking position.
' The fixed keepers for receiving tht front edge 13 of the chase consistsof thin plates 16, 17. 'lheseifixed keepers are curved to conform to the curve of the cylindrical-segment and project beyond the face of the bed 2 a distance preferably about the thicknelss of the chase.
place 1 two screws19,w2().. The sliding keepers, two for each chase, are located in position to slide into and outof the recesses 14, 15, at the rear edge of the chase. The sliding keepers for the chase 6, are denoted by 21, 22. They are each provided with one or more, in the present instance with one, elongated shouldered slot 23 through which a set screw'24 extends, the under face of the head of the screw engaging the shoulder within the slot. The sliding movement of the sliding keepers is sutiicicnt to permit the end of the keeper to overlap the beveled edge of the chase to an extent preferably equal to the thickness of the chase. Both the fixed and the sliding keepers are let into the cylindrical segments of the cylinder a distance suilicient to bring their outer faces substantially flush with the outer face of the segment. and the Walls of the cutaway portions of the segments in which the slid ing keepers are seated serve to guide the said keepers in their sliding movements.
form cylinder. llo'replace a; chase, simply reverse the above procedure.
The number of screws for holding the keepers in position is a matter of choice, and slight changes might heresorted to in j invention. i What I claim is I I 1. The combination with a form cylinder They are each -secure'd in Each cylinder segment has fixed keepers at.
ward in its own pane oft the bed of the' the form and structure of the parts without. departing from the spirit and scope of my" Patented Noylpfllall.
' vided with beveled edges provided with a chase bed having undercuts at its opposite ends, of a type chase having its ends and front and rear edges beveled, a fixed keeper arranged to engage one edge otthe chase and a curved sliding keeper arranged to conform to and engage the opposite beveled edge of the chase.
2. The combination with a form cylinder provided with a. chase bed having undercuts at its opposite ends, of a type chase having its ends and front and rear edges beveled, a curved fixed keeper arranged to conform to and engage one beveled edge of the chase and a curved sliding keeper arranged to conform to and engage the opposite beveled edge of the chase.
3. The combination with a type chase proand with recesses at the opposite ends of one beveled edge, of a form ylinder provided with a bed having undercuts at its opposite ends for receiving two of the opposite beveled edges of the chase and with sliding keepers arranged to engage the chase in the said recesses.
4. In combination, a flat type chase prw videdwith beveled edges and with recesses at one edge, a form cylinder provided with a flat chase bed and cylindrical segments at the opposite edges of the bed, the said bed having undercuts at its opposite ends to receive the ends of the chase, fixed keepers seated in one cylindrical segment and sliding keepers seated. in the opposite cylindrical segment in position to enter the reeesses at the edge of the chase.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of January 1910.
