DIVAN-BED.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed. January 28, 1910. Serial No. 540,628.

To all whomit may concern:

Be it known that I, HYMAN' FREEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Divan-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The'object of my invention is to so construct a divan that it can be instantly changed from a seat into a bed for a child, and by another movement be changed into a bed for an adult; to combine in it the elements of simplicity, durability, cheapness, ease and certainty of operation in changing the positions of the parts to form a seat, a bed for a child, or a bed for an adult; that provides a double spring seat, and in exter+ nal shape, size and appearance conforms to that of a regular divan."

. The manner in which I accomplish my object is described in the following specifi' cation and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the parts in position to form a divan. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the several parts being in position to form a bed, part of the cover being folded over. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional View showing the parts in position to form a childs bed. Fig. d is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line 4L4 Fig. 2 showing the several parts partly adjusted to form a bed for an adult. Fig; 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view showing the'parts in position forming a bed for an adult. Fig. 6 is a plan View, the parts being in position to form a bed for an adult. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 1 are views of a bracket and roller therein fixed to the head end of the parts forming a bed.

In the drawings 10 indicates the main frame, which may be inade of any material, size and design. On each of the ends 11 of this frame, which form the feet and arms of this divan, is an inside curved guide piece 12. At the lower end of each of these guide pieces is a stop-block13, and a curved guide piece 14. Below these parts and fixed to the end parts 11 are transverse slide rails 15. Connecting the end parts 11 are

16, 17 and 18. These ends and rails form the main frame 10. Slidably supported in the frame 10 is a folding frame constituting the main portions of the seat and bed. The center part 19 of this frame is adapted to slide inside the ends 11 on the rails 15. The

other two parts are pivotally connected to the center part 19 by the hinges 20. One of these parts 21 is adapted to rest on the part 19 and form the seat of the divan as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.,and when unfolded as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 the part 21 forms the foot of the bed. The other part 22 forms the back of the divan as shown in Figs. 1

and 3, and forms the head of the bed as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Each of these parts are provided withcross bars 23. On these bars a number of spiral springs 24 are secured, inclosing these springs is a woven wire spring 25, which covers thethree parts and is secured thereto. Forming part of the center part are two legs 26 adapted to support the pivotally connected ends ofthe

19 and 21 as shown in Figs. 4 and -5. These legs also form stops adapted to engage the ends of the slide rails 15 when the parts are closed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Secured to the free .end of the part 22 are a pair of brackets 27 adapted to support a pair of wheels 28. These brackets and wheels are shown in detail in Figs. 7, 8, and 9, and in position in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Slidably supported under the center part 19 is a drawer 29. This drawer is adapted to hold the bed coverings when the device is used as a divan. Linked to the back rail 17 connecting the top portions of the ends 11 and connected to the free end of the part 22 of the folding frame, are two coiled springs 30. Fixed to the part 21 is an upholstered seat cover 31. Attached to the part 22 is an upholstered back cover 32. Removably attached to the bed frame is a pad 33 adapted to cover the wire spring, when the parts are arranged for a bed.

When the several parts are constructed and connected as described and shown in the drawings their operation is as follows When the device is closed and forms a divan as shown in Fig. 1, the part 21 is supported upon the center part 19. In thatposition the springs 24 are vertically coincident, whereby a double spring seat is provided as shown in Figs. 1 and 1. Thesupporting legs 34 on the free end of the part 21 are vertical inside the ends 11 and out of sight. To transform the divan into a childs bed,

the seat part 21 is turned over to the position shown in Fig. 3, thefree end being supported by the legs 84. To form a full bed for adults the bed frame can be-drawn out as shown in Fig. 4, and the seat part 21 Patented Nov. 7, 1911.

hen the bed frame is drawn out as described, the upholstered back can be removed or left is place as desired. In retransforming the device from a bed to a divan the part 2]. is folded over the part- 19 as shown in Fig. 4, and both parts are forced together into the main frame. This movement forces the wheels up the curved guides 12. The pull of the springs assists the upward movement of the free end of the head partof the bed when the vertical movement of that begins. The continued pressure of the center part 19 at the lower end of the part 22 forces that part into the vertical position to form the back as 'shown in Fig. 1. In that position the springs 30 hang in loops behind the back. The sliding movement of the parts described is stopped by the legs 26 striking the ends of the slide rails 15. The parts 14 are adapted to prevent the displacement of the wheel end of the part 22 by pressure of the springs 30,when the bed frame is drawn out rapidly.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1 In a device of the kind described, the combination with a main frame having vertical ends and transverse slide rails; of vertically inclined, projecting and curved guides secured on the inside of said ends, a folding frame slidably supported on said rails having a plurality of pivotally connected portions, one of said portions being adapted to form a back of a seat and a. head of a bed, the freeend of said portion being slidably supported on said guides in vertically and horizontally inclinedpositions.

2. In a device of the kind described, the,

combination with a main frame consisting of vertical ends, rails connecting said ends,

transverse slide rails and vertically inclined, projecting and curved guides on the inside of said ends; of a folding frame slidably supported on said transverse rails, said frame having a plurality of pivotally connected portions, one of said portionsbeing adapted to form a seat back and head of a bed, the free end of said portion being slidably supported by said guides on which said end of said portion is free to be moved from a vertical to a horizontally inclined position and vice versa.

'3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a main frame consisting of vertical ends, rails connecting said ends,

cally'inclined projecting curved guides on the inside of said ends; and a folding frame slidably supported on said transverse rails, consisting of a plurality of pivotally connected portions, one of said portions being adapted to formthe back of the seat and the head of a bed; of anti-friction means attached to the free end of said last mentioned portion, said means being in movable contact with the projecting curved edge of said guides whereby the transverse movement of said folding frame on said slide rails causes said portion to be changed from a vertical back to a horizontally inclined head of a bed.

4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a main frame consisting of vertical ends, rails connecting said ends, transverse horizontal slide rails, vertically inclined projecting curved guides on the inside of said ends, and a folding frame slidably supported on said transverse rails, said frame consisting of a plurality of pivotally connected portions, one of said portions being adapted to form a seat back and to be moved from a vertical to a horizontally inclined position and thereby form the head of a bed; of wheels rotatabl attached to the free end of said portion ad apted to run on the curved projecting edges of said guides whereby said portion is movably supported as the back of a seat and head of a bed.

5. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a main frame consisting of vertical ends, rails connecting said ends, transverse slide rails, vertically inclined, projecting curved guides on the inside of said ends, and a folding frame slidably supported on said slide rails, consisting of a plurality of pivotally connected portions, one end portion being adapted to form a seat back and head of a bed; of a pair of brackets attached to the free end of said portion and a Wheel pivotally supported in each of said brackets, said wheels being supported on the curved projecting edges of said guides on which they are free to run when said frame is moved on said slide rails and whereby said end portion is raised to a vertical position to form the seat back and lowered to the horizontally inclined position to form the head. of a bed, and means adapted to limit the movement of said portion when in the horizontal position.

6. In an article of the kind described, the combination with a main frame having means for the support and guidance of a slidable frame therein; of a frame consisting of three main parts pivotally connected and slidably supported in said main frame, said sliding frame having a woven wire cover and spiral spring supports, and spiral springs inclosed between said supports and said wire cover, one of said parts being adapted to slide in said main frame, and to form a seat back and a head part of a bed, a second part of said frame being adapted to slide horizontally in saidmain frame and to form the bottom part of a seat; and a third part of said frame adapted to fold over said second part, and to thereby form the top part of a .seat, whereby the spiral springs in said second and third parts form a double spring cushion for said seat.

7. In an article of the kind described, the combination with a main frame having supporting and guiding parts for the support and movement therein of a sliding frame, and a sliding frame consisting of three portions pivotally connected together, one of said portions forming a seat back, and the other two portions being adapted when folded together to form a seat; of a series of spiral springs secured in each of said folding portions and thereby adapted to form a double springcushion for said seat, said port-ions when unfolded and drawn outward in said main frame forming a bed as described.
