To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, TRACY V. BUCKWAL- '1ERa citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Metal Shapes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a metal shape designed primarily for supporting and protecting the ends of platform boards, particularly the boards'of a baggage truck platform. Its specific purposes are to protect while holding t-he ends of truck platform boards together in a plane, to provide resistance to bending forces applied from various directions, to obtain the' necessary strength while securing room for wheel clearance ma baggage truck, and to facilitate the loading and removal of baggage therefrom.
The characteristic features of my improvements are disclosed in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of parts of a wheel and truck platform having my improved iron attached thereto; Fig. Qis a struction shown in Flg. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. y
The drawings represent parts of a trucks traction wheel l and platform 2 resting on the beam 3 and having my improved shape or iron applied to a side thereof. The iron comprises the web member 4, the parallel web member 4a connected therewith by the bent portion 4", the flange 4c extending at right angles from the web member 4a and the flange 4d extending atright angles from the web member 4. l The members 4 and 4c engage the lateral edge and bottom of the latform 2 comprising the boards 2", which have their ends secured to the iron in any suitable manner, as by the bolts 5. The part 4", which connects the tops of the parts 4 and 4a, extends suiiiciently above the upper surface. of the platform to act as a guard, for preventing articles from being shaken therefrom, while providing a desired rounded surface for facilitating the removal or loading of trunks and the like on the truck platform. The parts 4 and 4 provide ample strength for resisting bendlan View of the con-- ing due to weights bearing upon the iron directly or through. the platform, and the parts 4 and 4d, with 4b, provide ample strength for resisting blows or bending forces appliedlaterally to the iron.
The beam thus formed, being applied to and extending above the ends of the boards, gives greater clearance for t-he wheels because it has the necessary depth for providving the desired bending resistance without using the space required by the usual channels and angles placed beneath platforms,
which interfere with the use of wheels of a height desirable for such uses.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination, wit-h aI platform, of an iron having a substantially vertical part engaging the edge of Said platform, a substantially horizontal part connected with the bottom of said vertical part and engaging the bottom of said platform, a second substantially vertical part, a part connecting the tops of said substantially vertical parts, and a part connected with the bottom of said second named substantially vertical part and extending in the direction of said substantially horizontal part.
2. The combination, with a platform, of a beam having angularly disposed parts respectively engaging the edge and bottom of said platform, angularly disposed parts respectively extending in the directions of said parts first named, and a part parallel to the edge of said platform and connecting said parts together.
3. The combination, with a platform, of a beam comprising a member engaging the edge of said platform, a flange on said member and engaging the bottom of said platform, a member extending outwardly from the top of said first named member, a member extending downwardly from said last named member, and a ange extending inwardly from the bottom of said downwardly extending member.
4.
