To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. FRIEDLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labelingllachines, of whichthe following is a speciication.
My invention relates to improvements in 'labeling machines, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed. l l
An object of my invention is to provide an improved labeling machine having a capacity greater than that of previous constructions. l j
A further object of my invention is to pro;
vide an improved labeling machine, in which the several operating parts are yieldingly actuated throughout their working strokes; thereby eliminating all danger of injurious contact or interference between the moving parts upon breakage or accidental displacement of the actuating means.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved labeling machine, in which the boxes, or other articles operated upon, are fed from a plurality of independent supplies to a common labeling and delivery compartment; thereby providing a compact and durable construction capable of furnishing a large 'output with a. relatively slow operation of its working parts.

Referring to .the drawings, 1 indicates a pair'of independent supply chutes secured to a frame 2 and provided with open upper' ends for receiving boxes, or other articles; the boxes being fed by gravity to base plates 3 of said chutes in the path of a reciprocating feed slide 4. j The feed slide' 4 is reciprocated by an oscillating crank 5, having a slotted engagement with a pin 6 on said slide and journaled at 7 in the frame 2; a swing arm 8 being rigidly secured to the crank journal 7 and provided with a slotted end 9 for engaging a pin 10 on a lever 11. The lever 11` is pivoted onthe'lower portion of the machine frame, and vcarries a roller 12 in engagement With the slot 13 of a rotating cam 14,l whereby said lever will beggiven a double oscillation upon each revolution of the cam 14. A pair of pasu pots l5 are supported on the machine frame and. provided with rollers 1G for feeding paste, or other adhesive material, to paste platens 17, which latter reciprocate in guides on said pots to bring their paste-supplying surfaces 18 allternately over the feed rollers 16 and label holders 19; said platens being reciprocated by links 20 connecting them to levers 21, which are pivoted at 22 to the frame and maintained by springs 23 in yielding engagement with cams 24. By this onstruction, the springs 23 tendV to retract the platens for receiving a supply of paste from the rollers 16, and the cams 24 project Athe platens to bring their surfaces 18 over the label holders, as shown in Fig. 2. v
Each holder 19 carries a stock of labels 25 and is recessed to snugly receive a travcling head 2G; said holders lwith slots 27 for receiving pins 28 on said heads and with spring-pressed latches 29, which engage said heads and cooperate with said slots and pins to detachably lock the construction, an empty holder can be instantly removed and replaced by a filled holder, thereby permitting the supply of labels to be replenished Without loss of time in the operation of the machine. VBy this improvedguidesp33 for rods 34 The labeling compartment comprises an Iopen-ended chute having a rear wall 55 and side walls 56 and 57 supported from the machine frame.` A plate or liner 58 is resiliently supported, as by a spring 58, on the wall 57 to yieldinglyfengage theboxes or packages for frictionally supporting the latter during t-heir passage through the com' partment; said plate `having sufficient movement to accommodate slight irregularities and dill'ercuces in the sizes of such boxes.
The boxes are fedthrough the labeling v compartment by aplunger 59 carried by an augmented or excessive pressure being 30 rods 60 extending from aV cross head (il through guides (l2 on said compartment; said head and plunger being. normally maintained in depressed position by a weight G3, shown attached to said head. A lever 64, fulcrumed on the frame at 65,l carries a roller 66 engaging the head 6l; said lever being actuated by a rotating cam haring a pair of diametrically opposed depressed surfaces 67 for elevating the'head 6l and plunger 59. This provides a. very etiicient construction, in which the boxes are forced through the labeling compartment under the constant and yielding force of the Weight. 63; thereby avoiding all danger of exerted on the boxes throu h accidental displacement or jamming of thge latter, and preventing crushing or injury of said boxes.
A shutter 68 is pivoted at 69 to the lower portion of the labeling chute in position to swing upwardly into sliding engagement lwith the front face of the plunger 59; Whereby said .shutter constitutes a front Wall for the labeling compartment and a retaining guide for the'boxes While thelatter are being fed by the plunger to said compartment. The shutter 68 is detachably supported in operative position, as by a yoke 70 detachably secured by bolts 71 to the guides 62 and carrying any adjustable screvv 72 for engaging said shutter. This provides an advantageous construction, by which the shutter can be conveniently swung downward to permit ready inspection or removal of the boxes Within the labeling compartment. Links 75 are pivoted at 7G to bell-crank levers 77, which are fulcrumed at 78 on opposite sides of the labeling compartment; the free ends of said links being provided with suitable means, such as rollers 79, forfolding over the paste-carrying ends of the label and pressing them over the box to cause their certain adhesion to the latter. The rollers 79 are actuated on their folding stroke by rods 8O slidably mounted in guides 8l and engaging the levers 77 and intermediate bell-crank levers 82 fulcrumed at 83; said levers 82 being actuated by cams 84, Which are set on a common shaft 85 to aot-uate one of said links 75 slightly in advance' of the other, for preventing interference be tween the rolle-rs 79 on said links. springs 86 are connected to the 75 and to the guides 31, or other stationary part of the machine, for maintaining an elticient-yielding pressure of the rollers 79 in pasting the label to a box; said springs acting to retract the links 75 and levers 77 upon release of .the levers 82 from the cams 84. y
It will be noted that the paste platens, label are actuated by cams pivoted links grips, feed slide, holders, and plunger 14, 24, and (S7 secured to a common shaft 86; whereby said several cams constitute, in effect, a single rigid cam device, and thus insure accurate timing, or relative operation, between the several operating parts.

I claim:
l. In a labeling machine, the combination of a seriesvof supply chutes, a common labeling compartment, a plunger for ydirecting articles through said compartment, and a feed device for delivering articles successively from said several chutes to said plunger.
