I j My invention relates to calculating machines and its objects are to provide improved means for "effecting the carrying of.

lVith these objects in view, my invention is embodied .in preferable form, in the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

-Referring to the drawings'l is the frame of the machine and 2 are keys which bear the usual series of numbers for calculating purposes, each key having a large and asniall numeral in order that addition, subtraction a-nd division may be employed, in the ordinary way. The keys are arranged in longitudinal columns and transverse rows of digits with such digits in each longitudinal columnrunning from 1 to 9 of the major figures and from 8 to 0 of the minor figures The stems-3 of the keys of each longitudinal row, are mounted so as to slide vertically on fixed longitudinal bars 45 by means of slots 5 in the key stems and pins 6 engaging such slots and extending from the bars. Individual springs '7 connected to the'stems and pins serve to hold the keys normally in raised position. The stem has" a vertical extension or'arm 8 andv is turned at, right angles at its lower end to provide a heel 9, which is adapted to operate a sliding.

The number registering wheels (see Figs. 2, 16 and 17) are denoted by the reference character 11. The slide bar 10 is provided with two faces 12 and 13, and said slide bar is held normally in such position that the face 12 is tilted slightly upwardfrom a horizontal position. "When a key is depressed the stem strikeswhereupon the bar is drawn toward the front end of the machine by a spring 17, connected at one end to the frame of the machine and at the other end to a link 18,
having a lug 19loosely engaging a slot in the bar 10 and connected at the other end'to the wheel setting mechanism. As the bar is ret'racted, a stop-tooth 20 in the bar will strike against the vertical arm 8 and stop the bar. A series of such stop-teeth are provided,

To the rear end of link 18 is pivotally connected a pawlcarrying arm 23 which is loosely mounted by means of a sleeve-on a main shaft 24, extending across the machine and ]ournaled 1n the side frames thereof. (See Figs. 2,3 and 4) Pivoted on this arm is a pawl 25 adapted to engage a gearwheel 26 also loosely mounted on the shaft 24. The pawl 25 has a shoulder 32 against" and all the driving arms are connected and operated by a common bail 35 engaging channels in the drivin arms and fixedly connected to the 'rotata le main shaft by means of arms 36. These driving arms when oscillated toward the back of the machine by the main shaft are adapted to pick up and, carry with them the pawl-carrying arms and thus actuatethe pawl so as to carry back the number wheel a distance corresponding to the number of teeth of the pinion and gear over which the pawl has been carried by the key-actuated slide bar.
On one end of the main shaft outside the frame is an operating lever 37 provided with a handle and pressed against by a return spring 38, which serves to return the lever to its normal, upright position after it has been operated by hand. 'By pressing. the lever downward, the driving arms, paw-ls and number wheels are actuated to register by these wheels, the numbers on the keys previously depressed. To this end, the pawlcarrying, arm 23 has a contact member consisting of a lug 39 extending from'the arm at right angles thereto, into the path of a rocker member 40, pivoted on the driving arm and having a shoulder 41 against which bears the lug 42 of a trigger 43 which is pivoted on the driving arm and has a pointed or beveled end at 44 (see Figs. 6, 7 5, 4 and 3). The rocker has a tooth 45, extending through an elongated arc-shaped slot 46 in the driving arm whereby the rocker is per mitted a limited range of movement with respect to the driving arm. A coiled spring 47 joins the trigger and an arm of the rocker and normally holds these parts in engage ment, keeping the trigger down against the shoulder of the contact arm of the rocker and the shoulder behind the lug of the trigger.
In registering any amounts below and in cluding 9, the proper key having been depressed and the pawl of the corresponding wheel thereby carried to the front of the machine, the proper number of teeth as determined by the particular key-stop on the slide bar, the handle-lever is depressed. until it comes in contact with a stop-pin 48, thereby rotating the main shaft 24 and by means of the bail 35-36, carrying toward the back of the machine all the driving arms 34 and the driving arm corresponding to the retracted pawl or pawls 25 will pick up the pawl carrying arms 23, by striking against the projecting contact lugs 39 and impel such arms so as to turn the corresponding gears .26 and pinions 30 and number wheels 11. To prevent the momentum imparted to the pawl carrying arm by the driving arm from carrying the former too far and thus turning another tooth of the gear and pinion, stop means for each pawl arm is provided, consisting of a lug 49 and a circular abutment collar 49' fixed on a bell crank member 50, which is mounted so as to oscillateon a fixed shaft 51, a bell crank member being provided for each pawl device. The end 23 of the pawl carrying arm is adapted to be limited in its movement against .overthrow by the lug 49 in registering numbers under and up to 9 (see Figs, 4 and 19).-

The carrying mechanism will now be described. A spring pressed rocking lever 55 mounted on a shaft 56 projects into the path of the tooth 45 of the rocker 40 and is pressed by said tooth at each" actuating i'no'vement of the driving arm and upon the release of the rocker 10 from the trigger this lever throws the rocker against the pawl-carrying arm and the pawl thus impelled turns the gear a tooth and the number wheel to the next higher number. As the bell-crank is shifted to this carrying position, a hook 57 thereon, engages and is held by aspringpressed latch 58, mounted freely'on a shaft 59, and having a tail piece (30 so as to hold thebell crank in proper positicnduring the carrying operation.
A bail 61 extends across andimder the tail pieces and is pivoted on the shaft 59 and has an arm 62 pivotally joined to. a link 63. Thelink G3 has a pin which engages a cam slot 6 1 in a plate 65 carried by the main shaft and rocked thereby, by which connection the bail is adapted to release the latch 58 from the bell-crank hook. The bail 61 for the latches 58 and the bail 67 for the forward retaining detents 68 are linked together as shown and described, so that as one bail acts against the springs of its members, either latches or detents, the other bail moves away from the springs of its members and thus by having the springs of the two groups of members of substantially equal tension, with the tension of the one set opposed to that of the other, the operator in moving the handle is not obliged to exert extra power to overcome the force of either set of springs.

These .bars 80 have struckout, ears 81, one for each key, extending through the slots 82 in the key-stem supporting bars, and adapted when the lever 72 is pulled backward, to be'carried by the sliding bars 80 overthe projections 83 of any keys, that-may be depressed, therebyholding the key'down and preventing the pawl arm actuating slide bars from-engagingtheir detents 16 so that the amounts indicated by the keys thus held down may be repeated by operating the main operating lever as many times as desired. Multiplica tion may be thus effected.
Extending upward through the frame. at the rear of the machine area series of error keys 841 pivoted to levers 85 mounted loosely on the main shaft and provided with arms 86. When a wrong key has been depressed and it is desired to correct the error before registering, the error key is depressed and therefore the arm 86 is lifted against the driving pawl so as to remove the same from engagement with the gear and carry the pawl backward to original position, which action at the same time releases the key from the slide bar and restores the slide bar to normal position.
To-enable the number wheels to. be re-set to O, the number wheel shaft is slidably mounted in the frame so that it may be slipped sidewise until spring pressed pawls 87 carried on the hubs 88 'of the wheels and projecting into the interior of the hubs, drop into grooves 89 in the shaft so that the wheels are then looked to theshaft and are The grooves 84 are made' slanting at each end in order that the pawls may readily slip into and out of the same. The main shaft being then actuated by the handle will turn the segment pinion and wheel shaft, until the hole in the disk at the right end snaps over the pin on the frame, which happens when the operating lever has completed its forward stroke and turned the wheel shaft completely around, so as to bring all the wheels to O.
In connection with the registering mechanism above described, I employ a recording mechanism which is preferably of the following construction. Pivoted at one end to each pawl carrying arm is a long link 98, the other end of which is intermediately pivoted to a printing wheel driving gear 99, which meshes with a pinion 100 carried 102 extends across the wheels and is adapted to be moved into locking engagement therewith upon the printing movement of the platen. It will be seen that as the pawl carrier is movedthe required number of-teeth corresponding with the depressed key, it imarts the same movement through the link 98 to the type wheel and thus brings the required number to printing position. Mounted beyond the printing wheel is a tilting carriage 103, upon an axis rod 104, having side pieces 105 held together by bolts 106 and 107. In this carriage is mounted on spring arms 108 a platen 109. The object of the resilience of the platen arms is to permit a slight yielding in case the car riage is not released exactly at the moment that the platen strikes the printing wheel. The carriage is shown at normal position with the bolt or bar 107 resting against a stud 110 rising from the base of the machine.

This arm is connected to a bar 133 at right angles to the arm and extending from. the end of an arc-shaped arm 134:, of the gear segment. The arc-shaped .arms of the gears in one or more series are successively placed in advance of one another, so that as the gears are operated the bars 133 may pass one another freely. Thus, the arm 132 farthest to the right of the machineand corresponding to the right hand column of number 'Wh66lS is connected to the bar farthest to ward the rear from the axis of the gear.- A series of five of the stepped arm gears may be arranged on the right hand side and a similar series on the left hand'side.
It will be seen that all these operations are efiected by the movement of the operating lever in one direction, by the force exerted by the hand of the operator.
It is necessary toreset the latches after each operation of the operating lever and before such lever is actuated again, otherwise with the latch holding the bell cranks in carrying position, the carrying would be continued. indefinitely. Hence the/bail 61 is so actuated by the cam slot as the operating lever is finishing its return stroke as to'lift the latches and then the springs on the bell crank return the latter to their normal positions.
, At the same time the forward locking detent or pawls' are returned to locking position.
' Having thus described my invention, what .I claim is:
1 In a calculating machine, in combination with a main shaft, a series of number wheels, means intermediate the main shaft and number wheels for turning thelatter,

In a calculating machine, in combination with a series ofnumber wheels, a main shaft, a driving arm mounted on the main' .shaft,'wheel turning mechanism, a rocker member carried by the driving arm and adapted to cont-act with the wheel turning mechanism, a spring pressed lever against which one end of the rocker member bears at each actuation of the driving arm, means to hold said rocker from movement by said lever and means to release said holding means.
