To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED E. NAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, and JOHN C. Y. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Grange, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iarrows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in disk or other gang harrows of that kind wherein the harrow gangs are swingingly mounted and wherein provisions are made for changing the angle of the harrow gangs relatively to the path of travel of the harrow.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Among the objects of the invention is to simplify and strengthen the swinging or supplemental frames which carry the soil cultivating devices, whereby said frames will be iirm and rigid, while having the necessary iexibility to effect the adjustment desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means to prevent the nonsupported ends of the supplemental, harrow gang, supporting frames from rising.
Other Objects of the invention will appear as the description of the improved construction proceeds.
The invention is shown and specifically described as -embodied in a disk harrow, but certain of the features thereof may be embodied in harrows having other forms of cultivating devices or gangs and otherwise arranged.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a disk harrow embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end view of the harrow. Fig. 5 is a rear view of one of the swinging supplemental or disk shaft frames, removed from the other parts. Fig. 6 is a detail on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a detail section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a partial end elevation of a modified form of the harrow. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8.
The main frame of the harrow comprises the endA members 10, 10, the front member 11 and the rear member 12, the latter consisting, as herein shown, of a plain rod or bar which extends through the . upturned lugs 13, 13 at the rear ends of the end members. The front and end members may be made of angle bars, and are shown as connected at the front corners of the harrow by the straps 14.
Arranged at each side of the center of t-he main frame is a supplemental swinging disk carrying frame 15 (Figs. 1 and 5). Each swinging frame carries a pair of horizontal, parallel disk shafts 17, arranged one in rear of the other, and each pair of shafts are provided with disks 18, with the disks of one shaft of each pair arranged out of line with those of its associated shaft. Each swinging frame comprises horizontal, longitudinal or side members 20, 20 and inner andA outer transverse end members 21, 22, respectively, arranged in the form of a parallelogram.
In accordance with the present invention the side and end members of the supplemental frame are provided at their ends with the downturned terminals 24, 25, respectively, with the terminals of adjacent side and end members arranged parallel with each other at the corners of the frame to constitute in effect the standards of the supplemental frames. The terminal 4portions of the frame members are pivotally or loosely connected together so as to permit the side members of the frames to swing relatively to the end members, while maintaining the said side members and the disk shafts carried by the frames in parallelism.
Said side and end members are herein shown as being made of round bars or shafts, with the ends turned down to constitute the integral terminal or end portions thereof. The side members 20 and the inner end members 21 have a general arch shape with the central portions of the arch arranged horizontally. The central portions of the outer end members of said supplemental frames may be made like the inner members or may be converged upwardly in general inverted V-shape, for a purpose hereinafter to be described. 27, 28
designate bearing boxes carried by the terminals of the members of the swinging frame in which the ends of the disk shafts are rotatively mounted, the boxes 27 supporting the inner' ends of said shafts and the boxes 28 supporting the outer ends thereof. The outer bearing boxes are pivotally connected to the end members 10 of the main frame so as to permit the inner ends of the supplemental or disk carrying frames, of which said boxes constitute parts, to swing horizontally from front to rear of the main frame. As herein shown said outer boxes 28 are provided with endwise projecting lugs 29, 29 which extend in underlapping relation to the horizontal flanges of the end members l0, and are pivotally connected thereto, as by the bolts 30 extending through said lugs and lianges. Said bearing boxes are each provided with a pair of upwardly opening sockets 32, 33 (Figs. G and 9) arranged side by side into which the lower ends of the downturned terminals 24, 25 of the side and end members of the disk carrying frames extend. The sockets may be made integral with the upper members of the bearing boxes. The sockets 32 loosely receive the terminals of the end members 21, 22 of the supplemental or disk carrying frames, so as to permit relative angular movement of the sockets and terminals. The sockets 33 which receive the terminals of the longitudinal members of the disk carrying frames may be clamping sockets, and arranged to be clamped on the terminals of said longitudinal members. For this purpose the said socket members 33 may be each split at one side and provided with the lugs 35 through which the clamping bolts 36 extend. The said downturned terminals of the frame members are also loosely connected above the bearing box sockets by the clasps 38, consisting of the closed rings 39 (Fig. 7) to receive the downturned terminals of the end members 22 and the split or clamping rings 40, having the clamping lugs 41, 41 and clamping bolts 42, to receive the downturned terminals of the longitudinal members of the disk carrying frame.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, the
terminal portions of the side and end members of the swinging frames are arranged, at each corner of the frame, one in front of the other, while in Figs. 8 and 9 they are arranged one laterally inside of the other.
lVith this construction it will be observed that the longitudinal or side members of the disk carrying frames have a fixed or delinite relation with respect to the disk shafts and to the inner and outer bearing boxes in which said shafts are rotatively mounted. It will also be observed that the downturned terminals of the end members 21, 22 of said disk carrying frames lit loosely in the sockets 32 and in the closed rings 39 of the clasps 38. Therefore said latter terminals have relative turning movement in said sockets 32 and rings 39 when the disk carrying frames are swung about their pivots 30 to vary the angle of the disk shafts to the path of the harrow, so as to permit the angle of said longitudinal members 20 to be changed with respect to the end members 21, 22 of the disk carrying frames to give the required flexibility to said frames. 'lhe Ypivotal connection of the longitudinal and transverse or end members of the disk car` rying frames are therefore sufficiently long to enable the parts to be firmly connected and braced, while giving the necessary flexibility to the parts.
The inner ends of the supplemental or disk carrying frames are non-supported from the main frame, as in the construction shown in our prior application for United States Letters Patent, Serial Number 566,323, led on the 11th day of June, 1910, and generally the same means are herein shown for adjusting theinner or swinging ends of the frames to change the angle of frames to the path of the harrow as is illustrated in the aforesaid application. These features of the construction are made as fol-lows:

Said arch bar is attached at its forward and rear end, respectively, to the front member 11 and the rear member 12 of said frame. rlhe arch bar carries at its front end two adjusting levers 46, 46 mounted on the pivot bolt 47 extending through the arch bar. The lower ends of vsaid levers are connected by the links 48, 48 withthe inner ends of the swinging supplemental frames, said links being shown as hooked into eyes formed in the forward clasps 38 which connect the terminals of the side and inner end members of the frame. The leve-rsf and the frames adjusted thereby are locked in adjusted positions by the spring-pressed latches 50 carried by said levers and arranged to coperate with the notched sectors 51 fixed to the forward end of the arch bar', in the same manner as shown in our aforesaid prior application. Through the medium of said levers the inner or non-supported ends of the supplemental disk carrying frames are horizontally adjusted to vary the angle of the disk shafts to the path of the harrow and are locked in adjusted positions.
55 designates a longitudinally extending seat supporting bar arranged over the swinging, disk carrying frames and is supported at its outer ends from the outer end members 22 of said frames. As herein shown, the ends of said seat supporting bar are attached directly by the fittings 56 to the upper pointed ends of the end members of the frame, thus effecting a rigid connection,
of the bar to said frame members. Said bar may be attached centrally thereof to and be supported from the arch bar 45, as by means of a short vertical strut 57.
58 designates a seat bar arranged over the arch bar and attached at its forward end to the arch bar, as by means of the clip 59, and is supported at its rear end from the seat bar 55 by the arched standard 60. On the rear, horizontal end of the seat bar is adjustably supported a familiar form of seat 61.
By reason of the rigid connection of the seat supporting bar with the outer members of the supplemental swinging frames, and of the firm relation of the terminal pivotal members of the frames, the inner or nonsupported ends of the frames are prevented from rising, but are held down to hold the inner disks to the soil. The arrangement of the terminals shown in Figs. 8 and 9 or with one of each pair laterally inside the other, and connected as they are by the lower sockets and upper clasps enhances the bracing action of the members of the swinging frames to prevent the inner ends thereof from rising. Thus we are enabled to dispense with the down holding bearers shown in our aforesaid application.
We claim as our invention 1. A harrow comprising a main frame, a supplemental harrow gang frame pivoted at one end to the main frame to swing horizontally, and comprising side and end members provided with parallel, vertical terminal portions at the corners of the supplemental frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at the vertical parts of their terminal portions.
2. A harrow comprising a main frame, a supplementalharrow gang frame pivoted at one end to the main frame to swing horizontally, and comprising side and end members provided with parallel, vertical terminal portions at the corners of the supplemental frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at the vertical parts of their terminal portions, and means for adjusting the swinging end of said frame and for locking same in adjusted position.
3. A harrow comprising a main frame, a supplemental harrow gang frame pivoted at one end to the main frame to swing horizontally and comprising side and end members, each provided with integral, downturned end portions, means for loosely connecting the downturned portions of said side and end members of said swinging frame at the corners of the frames to constitute hinges to permit relatively swinging movement of the side and end members of the frame.

A disk harrow comprising a main frame, a disk carrying frame therein comprising longitudinal and transverse members arranged in the form of a parallelogram, said members being provided with downturned integral terminals, with the terminals of adjacent members at the corners of the frame arranged parallel to each other, bearing boxes at the inner and outer ends of the frame, disk bearing shafts rotatively mounted in said bearing boxes, and means for connecting the downturned terminals of the disk-carrying frame members to the bearing boxes, arranged to permit the longitudinal members of said frame to swing relatively to the transverse members, the bearing boxes at one end of the disk-carrying frame being pivotally connected to the main frame to permit the other end of the disk-carrying frame to swing horizontally.

A harrow comprising a main frame, and two supplemental, horizontally swing- -ing harrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and nonsupported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of said frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their downturned terminal portions.
6. A harrow comprising a main frame, two supplemental, horizontally swinging harrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of said frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their downturned terminal portions, and means carried by the main frame for adjusting the swinging ends of the frames and for locking them in adjusted positions.
7. A harrow comprising a main frame, two supplemental horizontally swinging harrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of the :trames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their downturned portions, an arch extending from front to the rear of the main frame over the swinging ends of said frames, and adjusting means carried by the arch bar for adjusting the supplemental frames and locking them in adjusted positions.
8. A harrow comprising a main frame, and two supplemental, horizontally swinging barrow gang trames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of said trames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their downturned terminal portions and the frames being constructed at their outer ends to brace the inner ends of the trames from rising.
9. A harrow comprising a main trame, and two supplemental, horizontally swinging barrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of said frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their downturned terminal portions, and a seat supporting bar extending over said swinging frames and fixed rigidly to the outer end members of said trames.
10. A harrow comprising a main frame,
and two supplemental, horizontally swinging barrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swing'- ing frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal port-ions at the corners of said trames and having means for pivotally connecting them attheir downturned terminal portions, the outer members of said frames being extended above the side members thereof and inclined inwardly toward the center ot' the barrow, and a seat supporting bar attached at its ends directly to the upper inwardly inclined portions of said outer trame members.
11. A harrow comprising a main frame, two supplemental, horizontally swinging harrow gang frames pivoted at their outer ends to the main frame and non-supported at their swinging ends, said swinging frames each comprising longitudinal and transverse members having downturned terminal portions at the corners of the frames and having means for pivotally connecting them at their terminal portions, an arch bar extending from front to the rear of the main i'rame over the swinging ends of said swinging frames, adjust-ing means carried by the arch bar for adjusting the swinging trames and locking them in adjusted positions, and means t'or connecting t-he frame members at the outer ends of the swinging frames in a manner to prevent the inner ends of said frames from rising.
12. A harrow comprising a main trame, two supplemental, horizontally swinging, barrow gang -trames therein, each comprising front and rear longitudinal members and transverse end members in the form of a parallelogram, said frame members consisting of shafts having downturned, integral terminals and the downturned pairs of terminals of adjacent shafts at the corners of the trames being parallel, vertically separated pivot means for each pair of terminals constructed to hold said terminals in parallel. relation and means carried by the main trame for adjusting said swinging trames and locking` them in adjusted positions.
13. A harrow comprising a main trame, two supplemental, horizontally swinging, barrow gang frames therein, each comprising front and rear longitudinal members and transverse end members in the form of a parallelogram, said trame members consisting of shafts having downturned, integral terminals and the downturned pairs of terminals of adjacent shafts at the corners of the frames being parallel, inner and outer fittings at the lower ends of said terminals, each otI said fittings being provided with a pair of sockets to receive the lower ends of the associated pair of downturned terminals and with means for clamping one ot the sockets liXedly on its terminal, while the other associated terminal is loose in its socket, the fittings at the outer ends of the swinging frames being pivoted to the main frame, and means carried by the main frame for adjusting the inner swinging ends of said frames and for locking them in adjusted positions.
14. A barrow comprising a main frame, two supplemental, horizontally swinging, harrow gang frames each comprising front and rear longitudinal members and transverse end members in the form of a parallelogram, each trame member consisting of a shatt havingl downturned terminals and the pair ot downturned terminals of adjacent shafts at each corner of the frames being parallel, inner and outer fittings at the lower endsy of said terminals, each of said fittings being provided with a pair of sockets to receive the lower ends of the associated pair ot downturned terminals, with means Jfor clamping one `ot the sockets iXedly on its terminal, while the other associated terminal is loose in its socket, clasps engaging' and pivotally connecting the dovvnturned terthe presence of two Witnesses, this 29th day l0 minals at points above said sockets, means of July, A.
