Description
r I L LlTM GRAPNER, WASHINGTON D C f UUI, gieten- @nicht Gettin.
A.'B. CLARK, b ORTH OXFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lette/rs Patent l\'o.100,724, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPnovnn'Boor lAma sHoEsHAvE.
The Schedule referred to vin these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom tt may concern.-
` Be it known that I, A. B. CLARK, of North Oxford, in the c ounty of-Worcester, and in the State of Mas-l sachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in-Boot and Shoe-Shayes; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in 'connection v with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred'to, forms a full and exact spccitication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class,
together with such parts as I claim and desire to s e cure by Letters Patent. g
My invention relates to that class of devices known as shoe-shaves, and
Its nature consists in certainimprovements in the details ofthe same, consisting First, in supplying the small mouth-piece with a slide-cap, attached to the same bymeans of a small `iron screw, and operated by a screw-bar and nut, for
the purpose of curing a perforation for the reception of thehalf-sole or welt, and so regulating the size of the same, by means of the screw andnut aforesaid, as to receive any sized half-sole which may be desired, andcut bothsoles down to the required nish with Vone stroke ofthe shave.
Second, in combining with -the said mouth-piece a metallic apron, attached firmly to the same, and running back and over the rear of the binding-screw, for
the purpose of preventing the cloggingof shavings in y front of the binding-screw.
Third, in combining with the larger side of the shave a swing-block, operated by a screw, by means of which 4the knife is held in position', set forward when it wears out, and in providing the larger side of the shave with an arcular adjustable slide-cap, attached to and connected therewith by two pins orserews, in such a mauner as to regulate lthe aperture to any required thickness of stock, and be tightened firmly by means of small iron set-screws.
And also,in combining with thc angular-shaped aperated by an eccentric-headed screw-,in suoli a manner that it may be adj usted to therequired thickness` of sole.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, which illustrates my'invention and forms apart of the specification thereof, and in which coirespondingparts are represented -by similar letters,
Figure 1 is a side viewof the shave, with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the same, and
Figure 3 represents a hollow handle.
The following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of my invention.
A represents the lax-gel knife ofthe slm-ve, which is of a curvilinear form, and the ends of whicht iuilat eral grooves, cut for their reception respectively in the ,l
into any intermediate position, leaving an open aperture, E, also represented by dotted lines.
After being thus moved, the said cap may be held firmly in position by the sma1lsetscrew F. By this means the width of the aperture may be adapted to any thickness of stock made use of.
Attached to the mouth-piece is the lever or gauge l K, turning upon a pivot-piu. The said gauge. is adjusted by the eccentricv brass head-screw, down against which it is turned when in use, so that it `will enable the operator to trim any required thickness of single lsole, an advantage over all other heel-shaves. 4
The handles K1 and K2 are of curvilinear form, but while the end of the handle K2 curve-s below the plane' of the top of the shave,-the handle K1 curves broadly' above it, in order, if necessary, to pass through the, shank without obstruction.
Attached to the mouth-piece L of the upper shave is the screw-bar M, upon which is the thumb-nut N. The slide-cap O is secured to the same by a screw passing'through the oblong slot P, in such a manner as to admit of its lateral movement.
The' said slide-cap covers an aperture in the. mouthpiece, made for the purpose of receiving the project-y ing part of the half-sole or welt.
The size of the said aperture may be accurately regulated by moving the slide to the light or left, and by the thumb-screw N, in such a manner as will enable the shave with one stroke to cut both soles down to -a proper Afinish, thereby completing the work as neat-ly,
and in half the time, of the ordinary way.
Directly under the knife and inside the frame is a thin metallic apron, attached rmly to the mouthpieceand running back and' over to the rearof the `binding-screw, for the purpose of preventingV the clogging of shavings in front of the binding-screw, which is constantly liable to be the case without it. l It is a side guide, which is essentially the same a in other devices of this description.
In order to render the right handle light, and at the same time ll the hand, thev handle may be covered with. sheet metal of oval or other form, as is represented in iig. 3.
. Having thus explained the construction, operation,
and relative arrangement of the component parts of' y my invention, I will indicate what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clauses, to wit: v
1.v In combination wit-h the month-piece L, with its screw M, and thumb-nut N, the sliding cap O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with mouth-piece L, the thumbnut by which it is vertically adjusted, substantially as specified.
3. In combination with the blade A, the swingblock Bfwith itsscrew C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The sliding cap D,in combination with the mouthpiece H, with its screw F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The arrangement of the gauge K, the eccentric screw F by which it is operated, and the sliding cap I), all constructed and operated substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th clay of November, 1869.
A. B. CLARK.
