Beit known thatI, Josnoa BROOKS, of Boston, in the countyof Suffolk,.and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Parasol `and Umbrella-Handle; and I do herebydeclare that thc following is a full and exact description of the same, ref:

Thepnature of my inventionis that of` constructing a parasol or umbrella-handle so as that a folded fan is` `inclosed in the, lower portion-of it, and that portion being detachable from the otherpalrt, the folded `fau Y can be withdrawn and` expanded (beingstill attached to the lower part of the said handle, which `then becomesthe handle of .the fan) and used, or at pleasure restored, foldedfto its receptacle, which is then returned toits connection with the parasol.

The advantages of this arrangement are that the 4fan occupies room otherwise unavailable, is securely protected, and is always at hand when the parasol is in possession. And, t

(It is sometimes armed with a male screw, which enters into a female screw in that portion of the parasol-hanfdie.

The operation of my device is as follows:

'lhe fan and tubes being in connection with the parasol-handle,-as seen in tig. 1, and it `being desired to use the fan, the lower part of the parasol-handle is withdrawn, and the fan-tubes, &e., areseen asin tig. 2. l 'lo spread the fan, the stling and tassel I is taken hold of with one hand (the other hand holding the fanhandle A) and pulled, when the fan emerges, and the whole of this part of my device presents the appearance shown in iig. 3, and 4the fan is ready for use. When the function of the fan has been performed, the

1 do not claim a jointed parasol-shaft, which, the `shaft being bent, forms the dome of the parasol into a fan, `nor do I claim the peculiarly-constructed fan shut into a tube; and I do not ,confine myself to the use of a fan, circular when expanded; but

What I claim herein as of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
