To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. NIGH- oLs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roanoke, county of Roanoke, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Button Removers, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knife; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view thereof partly in side elevation; and Fig. 3 a transverse section taken through the knife blade and its seat.

By far the larger supply of button shoes come to the retailer from the factory with the buttons fastened in place simply by a temporary thread, and when the retailer sells the shoes he removes these buttons and fastens them permanently in the proper place to fit the feet of the wearer. In re moving these buttons they are frequently mislaid or lost, and this causes a great deal of inconvenience especially in view of the fact that these buttons are made in difierent sizes and colors nowadays.

It is the object of my invention-to provide a button removing implement which will enable the buttons to be removed readily and automatically drop them into a cuplike holder, constituting the handle of the implement, so that each set of buttons will be caught and held until they are again fastened to the shoes.

The letter a; designates the cup-like handle which is cylindrical and has its lower or outer end I) closed while its upper or inner end is open. The wall of this hollow cylinder is extended at one side to form a knife seat 0, which in cross section corresponds to a segment of the cylindrical handle. A knife (Z is fastened to this extension 0 in such manner that it shall project beyond the plane of the surface of the cylinder in a tangential direction, its cutting edge 6 being in a plane parallel to the surface of the cylinder. To position the knife in this manner with respect to the grasping surface of the handle, the back edge of the blade is fastened to the inner face of the extension 0 along one edge thereof, the fastening means consisting of a pair of removable bolts or screws f passing through corresponding holes in the blade and the extension 0. The opposite longitudinal edge of the extension 0 is provided with a supplemental pair of holes 9, so that the blade may be transferred to that side of the handle if it be de sired, whereby the device is rendered adjustable to either a right handed or a left handed person.

It will be seen that by grasping the handle a in one hand and placing the edge of the knife against the thread which fastens the button shank, and then forcing the button over upon the knife blade the thread will be cut and the button will at the same time be pushed over toward the inner concave side of the extension 0, so that when the button is released, it will fall into the cup-like handle. WVith this device therefore it will be seen that the buttons can be removed rapidly and that the buttons will be prevented from being lost or mislaid and further that each set of buttons will be kept separate so that matching the buttons will be unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

In a button removing implement, the combination of a hollow handle closed at its lower end and open at its upper end and provided with a knife seat extending from the rim of its open end outwardly in the plane of the wall of the handle, and a knife blade fastened against the inner face of said seat extension and projecting outwardly therefrom and lying tangentially to the handle.
