JAMES ANDREW JORDAN, F BANGOR, IRELAND,
ELECTRIC BRANDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented @ot. 2st, M1 131,
Application filed Eebruary 25, 1911. Serial No. 613,745.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, litres ANDREW JOR- DAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain,
an electric current is passed through the coil residing at Bangor, county Down, Ireland,
have invented a certain new and useful Improved Electric Branding Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates" to electric heating devices having a receptacle within which a resistance coil is suitably arranged and insulated, the object of this invention being to provide an improved form -of electric heating device which is specially adapted for the operation of branding or stamping meat and which will be portable and be instantly ready for use and make a clean and absolutely indelible and inobjectionable mark upon the meat. I Under my invention the improved branding device consists of a portable stamp or brand holder having removably secured to it any desired metallic or other stamp, or brand, and between the stamp or brand and the holder a resistance coil or a series of resistance coils, suitably arranged above a plate removably secured to the holder the coil or coils being suitably insulated. When or coils, heat will be generated and the stamp, or brand, will be subjected to the heat generated so that the temperature thereof will vbe raised to such a degree that on placing it against the meat a corresponding mark or brand will be obtained thereon.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have hereunto appended two explanatory sheets of drawings, whereon I have shown, by way of example, one form of the electric branding device made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a view looking on the face of the device, with the brand or stamp plate removed. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a view looking on the face of the stamp or brand plate.
On the drawings the same reference letters, wherever repeated, indicate the same parts.
Referring to the drawings, the stamp or brand holder shown thereon consists of a rectangular boX a, made of metal or other suitable material, having a plate b secured to it by means of bolts 0 screwed into sockets a provided in the bottom of the box. vHoles b are provided in the plate 6 and above it resistance coils d are arranged and wrapped around mica or equivalent striped and in cased lIl'IDlCZL, or equivalent, wrappings d The coils (Z may, of course, be otherwise suitably incased and insulated. The resist ance coils d are, at one end, suitably connected together at (F, and, at the other end, they are connected to terminals {2* which are,'or which may be, when desired, connect edto the source of supply of electricity by means of the flexible wires d. The stamp or brand 7 (showing in the drawings with the letters B, C, thereon) may, of course, be of any desired shape and made to give any desired mark on the meat. The stamp plate f is arranged above the resistance coils cl and secured to th holder or box a by means of the studs f so that it is removable and can, if desired, be replaced by another stamp or brand. The box a to which the stamp or brand f, resistance coils d, and
plate 6, are secured is provided with loandles g, or their equivalent, whereby the device may be carried about and be held against the meat for the purpose of marking the same.
The arrangement of the device describedis such that, when an electric current is passed through the coils d, heat will be generated and the stamp, or brand f, above or in front of the coils d, will be subjected to the heat generated and thereby heated to the desired degree so that, on placing it against the meat, as described, a corresponding mark or brand Will be obtained thereon.
The supply of electricity may be obtained from any suitable source, such as a portable battery or from the mains of a public or other supply.
The stamps or brands f should be made of a material which could be readily heated and maintained at an even temperature.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An electric device for branding meat comprising, in combination, a holder open at its top and provided with an opening in its bottom, a number of internally screw threaded bosses on the interior of the bottom of the holder, screw threaded bolts corresponding in number to the bosses and removably secured thereon and projecting beyond the top of the box, a metal plate on the top of the box provided with holes for the recepw the plate below the passage of electric conducting Wires,
electrical resistance coils superposed on said plate and electrically insuleted therefrom, a brand plate sl perposeti on sei i electrical 1'e sistence coils psovidai with holes for the passage of the beforementionai bolts and secured to the plate below the electrical resistence C0flS,'WiI(-ES connected to the resistslice coils Whichfigass through the holes in e resistance coils and in box bottom for leeeing the electric cm rent to ami from the resistance coils and handles secured to the holder formenipuleting the branding device.
