WATER-GATE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. DOUGH- ERTY and NEIL STEWART, citizens of the United States, residing at Mont-rose, in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in water gates especially adapted for use in irrigating ditches to regulate the quantity of water flowing therethrough, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of the invention is to provide posts of improved construction for holding the gate bars, and permitting the adjustment and removal of the gate bars.
A further object of the invention is to combine with the posts, gate bars of improved construction which may be removed and adjusted at will, and which also serve to brace and secure the posts in place.
A further object of the invention is to efl'ect improvements in the construction of the post-s and to combine therewith, braces to support the posts and the gate bars against the pressure of the water.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a plan of an irrigating gate constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the same in place in an irrigating ditch. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, partly in section on the plane indicated bv the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the same on the plane indicated by the line Z b of Fig. 1, the hood on the post and the upper port-ion of the brace being also shown in section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the posts. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the gate bars, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the slides.
In accordance with our invention, we provide a pair of posts 1, each of which is provided on its inner side with a channel 2, which extends vertically of the post from end to end. Each post is also provided on one side with an anchoring flange 3, which projects beyond the rear side of the post and is adapted to be pressed into and buried in the bank at one side of the irrigating ditch or stream, against which the post abuts. Each post is made of a single piece of galvanized sheet iron which is bent to form one Specification of Letters Patent.

The post also comprises inner walls 5, 6, and outer walls 7, whereby the post is made hollow and is provided with the channel 2 which is inclosed on three sides and is also partly inclosed on the inner side of the post, the inner wall 9 of the post being pro vided with a slot 10 which extends fro-m end to end thereof.
In practice each post is driven in the bottom of the ditch or stream and with its rear side bearing against one bank thereon, and with the anchoring flange 3 which projects beyond the rear side embedded in the bank, the slot 10 being on the inner side of the post or that side which is opposite the other post. Each post is provided on one side with a hood 11 which forms a socket for the reception of the upper end of an inclined brace 12, which is placed on the side of the post below the gate, with its lower end driven in the bottom of the ditch and its upper end inserted in the hood or socket. The braces 12 serve to sustain the posts and the gate against the pressure of the head of water in the ditch.
The gate comprises a series of bars 13, of suitable width and which are made of galvanized iron and provided at their ends with heads 14 to fit in the channels of the posts, the slots 10 serving to clear the webs or body portions of the gate bars. It will beunderstood that the heads by engagement with the inner sides or opposed sides of the posts serve to connect the posts together, to keep the posts parallel with each other, and to also brace them against stresses. The lower edge of each gate bar fits in a groove 15 in the upper edge of the next lower gate bar, and a suitable number of the gate bars are employed. The gate bars are removable from the posts and may be drawn upwardly therefrom, as will be understood.
To open the gate, to any desired extent, one or any suitable number of the gate bars may be removed. To secure the gate bars in place, in the posts, I provide a pair of slides 16, which are substantially T-shaped cross sectionally, and of suitable size to enable them to fit in the channels of the posts, with their arms or webs 17 extending through the slots 10. Each of these slides is provided with a set screw 18 for engagement with the post so that the slides may be secured to the posts at any desired adjustment according Patented Oct. 241, 1911.
