Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed July 7, 1910. Serial No. 570,765.
To all whom it may con cam:
Be it known that I, lVILHnLM WEFER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Ufer, near Vogelsang, Westphalia, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Street-Sweeper, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a machine of the kind used for taking up the refuse previously swept up into rows in a street, such refuse being passed by a roller brush onto an elevator and delivered by means of the latter into a receptacle.
According to the present invention the elevator and the collecting brush, which elements are narrower than the machine frame, are adapted to be disposed at one side in said frame so that refuse placed near the curb stone can be more conveniently taken up. Elevator and brush are, moreover, adapted to be adjusted from one side to the other of the machine so that refuse may be taken up at either side of the street without reversing the traveling direction of the machine.
The invention is illustrated by way of eX- ample in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 representing a side view of the machine, partly in section, Fig. 2, a plan of the same, and Fig. 3, a view of the lower part of the brush and elevator on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a side View of the machine on an enlarged scale, partly in section.
On the axles a and Z) of the road-wheels c and (Z a machine frame 6 is mounted. Be tween the brackets g on said frame a rotatable shaft f-and a fixed shaft 70 are arranged, the former being rotated through the medium of the road-wheels o. A roller brush it is slidably feathered on the shaft f and is controlled by an arm 7 the forked end of which is fitted with lugs 8 engaging a circular groove in the boss 9 of the brush. The arm 7 is firmly connected to one end of a sleeve 5 which is loose on the shaft 70 and which is adapted to receive a rotatable supporting roller 2' for the elevator m. A collar 6 on the other end of the sleeve holds the roller on the latter, and roller and brush are compelled by the arm 7 to keep in a registering position. The elevator apron m is guided on the roller Z which is slidably feathered on a shaft 17., the latter being rotatably mounted between brackets on upright pillars 0 and rotated by means of a chain or the like from the axle a. Underneath the brush it a guide-plate g is provided along which the refuse is passed by the brush and delivered to the elevator apron m. This plate is hinged to a plate T which is concentric with the shaft 70 and held, by brackets connected to the sleeve 5, close to the elevator apron to prevent the refuse from falling through. An out-ward bend at the lower end of the plate 1 prevents an engagement of the same with the elevator apron. The plate 9 is actuated by a spring .9 so as to be resiliently held with its lower end against the ground. A rounded bead or rib t is provided on its abutting edge to guide the plate over projections on the ground. The elevator is covered by a plate or board a which is extended along the frame 6 and turned down over the brush it to prevent the refuse being scattered by the latter. As the machine is driven along the road, the brush it, which is rotated at high speed, passes the refuse along the plate g to the elevator apron m which, being fitted with cross-ribs p in known manner, conveys the same over the roller Z and delivers it by means of a chute 13 into a wheeled receptacle. The latter may either be coupled to the machine or driven separately, as long as it can easily be exchanged for a fresh one when full.
F or the purpose of adjusting elevator and brush laterally in the machine frame so that, While the machine is being driven in the same direction, refuse can be taken up at either side of the road, the following arrangement is provided :A screw-spindle 1 is rotatably mounted across the machine in bearings 3 connected to oblique stays 3 and fitted at both ends with hand wheels l. The rotation of the spindle adjusts the position of a nut -2 fitted on its screw thread. A bracket 2 on one of the stays 3 has a doublearmed lever w pivoted thereto. One end of said lever is hinged to the nut 2, and the other end, which is bifurcated, engages a circular groove w in a boss 4; on the roller Z, the position of the latter being thus controlled by the nut 2. In the same manner a double-armed lever 12, pivoted to a bracket 11, has one arm hinged to the nut 2 and the other to a bracket 10 on the arm 7 which is therefore, together with the brush it and the roller 2', also controlled by the nut 2. The elements being, as previously noticed, slidable on their shafts, an adjustment thereof from one side of the machine to the other can thus be effected by rotating the spindle 1.
I claim:
1. A refuse-collecting machine, comprising a .Wheeled frame, a short brush roller mounted in the frame and rotated by the road-Wheels for taking up the sweepings, a resilient scoop along which the sweepings are guided, an elevator registering With the brush roller and With the scoop to receive the sWeepings from the latter, a chute for discharging the sweepings, and means for adjusting brush, scoop and elevator from one side of the machine frame to the other, substantially as set forth.
2. A refuse-collecting machine, comprising a Wheeled frame, a short brush roller slidably feathered on a rotatable shaft, an elevator registering With the roller and also slidably arranged on its shafts, a resilient scoop to guide the svveepings from the brush roller to the elevator, means for rotating roller and elevator, and means for adjusting them together With the scoop from one side of the machine frame to the other, substantially as set forth.
3. A refuse-collecting machine, comprising a Wheeled frame, a short brush roller slidably feathered on a rotatable shaft, a sleeve guided on a stationary shaft behind the roller, bifurcated arms at the ends of said sleeve engaging grooves in the bosses of the roller, an elevator having one guide roller rotatably mounted on said sleeve, a resilient scoop for guiding the sweepings from the brush roller to the elevator, means for rotating brush roller and elevator, and means for adjusting them together with the scoop from one side of the machine frame to the other, substantially as set forth.
4. A refuse-collecting machine, comprising a Wheeled frame, a short brush-roller slidably feathered on a shaft rotated by the road-Wheels, an elevator registering with the roller and slidably arranged on its shaft, a resilient. scoop for guiding the sweepings from the brush roller to the elevator, arms connecting the brush roller With the lower guide roller of the elevator andholding elevator and brush in coinciding position, a screw-spindle rotatably mounted across the machine, a nut fitted on the screw-thread so 'as to be adjusted when the spindle is rotated, and double-armed levers hinged With one end to the nut and with the other end to elevator and brush so that the position of these elements can be adjusted by the rotating of the spindle, substantially as set forth.
5. A refuse-collecting machine, comprising a Wheeled frame, a short brush roller slidably feathered on a shaft rotated by the road Wheels, a sleeve guided on a stationary shaft behind the roller, bifurcated arms'at the ends of said sleeve engaging grooves in the bosses of the roller, an elevator havin one guide-roller rotatably mounted on sai. sleeve, a plate held by brackets on said sleeve close to the elevator apron, a resilient scoop hingedly connected to said plate so as to guide the sweepings from the brush roller to the elevator, means for rotating the elevator and means for adjusting the same together with the scoop and the brush roller from one side to the other of the machine frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 17th day of January 1910, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
