MIA [5551i PHILLIP H. UNSINGEB, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
SLFET'Y-BAZOR.
Specification of Letters Tatent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed December 27, 1910. Burial). 599,552.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP H. Unsmonn,
a citizen of the United States, and a resihereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable otiiers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompu nying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to safetywazorsand it has for its object the provision of an improved and highly efficient razor of this character, which is simple, durable and inexpensive in its construction, is free from springs and corners which are hard to clean and insanitary, is capable of being easily and quickly cleaned, and does not require Water pressure for cleaning but can be cleaned by rinsing it in a basin yf water.
The blade is also rigidly supportied for its entire length and width to prevent a vibrating thereof during shaving, and is absolutely protected at the corners thereof.
Further objects of my invention as well as the operation, construction and arrangement of the parts thereof are fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompan ing drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a root elevation of a safetyrazor embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevationthereof. Fig. 3 ii; a similar view thereof with the parts disassembled, and F gs. 4, 5 and 6 are front, side and rear elevations ot a" form thereof designed for use as a corn-parer or the like.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the holder or body of my safet -razor, and comprises a fiat plate the rear e ge of which is turned over upon itself as at 2, to receive and form a guard for the rear edges of the blade 3 and blade clampin -plate 4. The holder 1 is depressed centra 1y of its ends ediacent to its rear edge to provide a boss "7 to which the inner end of a handle 6 is rigidly secured in a suit ble manner, the holder plate 1 being transversely tilt/ed relative to the handle axis to stand at all-oblique angle thereto as shown.
The blade 3 has its forward or cuttin edge projected forwardly from the edge 0 the holder 1 when in )roper position thereon, and is rigidly held to the holder by the clamping-plate 4 in such manner as o prevent any vibration of its cutting edge during shaving. This clam ing piste is adapted to rest flat upon the ilade and has its ends each provided with a tongue 7, which extends downwardly and inwardly under the associated end of the body-plate 1 to slidingly coiiperate therewith to hold the clampin -plate to the blade. The for ward ed e 0 the late 4 is bent downwardly atan ob ique an 1 in advance of the cutting edge ofthe bla e3, as shown at 8, to serve as a guard therefor, and is provided with an elongated lon itudinally extending opening 9 through w ich the cutting edge of the blade is ex osed. The opening 9 is disposed in the fol line of the guard B so that the blade edge extends forwardly of its rear wall as shown. The corners of the blade are fully protected by the ends of the ard 8 so as to prevent any possibility 0 such ends irritating or cutting the skin during shavin It Wlll be noted that the guard presents a smooth flat surface to the skin, which smooths the skin before the blade and revents the blade from cuttin the face. The form of guard shown ,is shaving to the toothed form of guard, as the opening between the guard and the blade edge, permits all hair and lather to pass freely therethrough to the underside of the blade and holder, where it can be easily removed by rinsing in water.
The form shown in Figs. 4 to 6 is smaller in size thanthe form in Figs. 1 to 3 and is particularly intended for the paring of come, but may be used for other purposes for which it may be adapted or appropriate. The construction of this form of m invention is the same as that above described, except that the rear edge of the holder plate 1 instead of bein bent over upon itself is bent onl slight y inwardly over the rear edge of t 0 late 1 and than is turned rearwardly, as s own at 10, thus providing an elongated groove or eoncaved surface 11. The inner side of the metal or superior in forming this groove is roughened, as shown, to provide a nail filing surface, which can be very conveniently used to file the toe or fin er nails.
t is a parent that I have provided an exceeding y simple and strong form of instrument of the character described, which is easily cleaned, safe in use, and capable of being readily assembled or disassembled as desired, and that the instrument shown in Figs. 4' to 6 is of considerable value for home use in the treating of corns, or the like, and the nails and also for the use of chiropodists.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
. 1. A safety razor comprisingaflatholderplate having a handle projecting from one side thereof and having its rear edge turned upwardly to form a stop, a blade seating flat on said plate, and a flat clamping-plate superimposing said blade and having end ears which are bent to slidingly cooperate with the holder-plate to removably clamp the blade thereto, said clamping-plate having its forward edge bent downwardly to provide a guard and having an opening therein in register with the cutting edge of the blade to expose the same.
2. A safety razor com rising a holderplate having its rear ed e ashioned to form a stop, a blade seating at upon said holderplate with its rear edge in contact with said stop and its forward ed e projecting beyond the forward edge 0 the holder-plate, a flat clam ing-plate seating upon said blade and av-ln end ears which bend downwardly and inwardly under the ends of the holder-plate to shdingly co'c'vperate therewith to removably clamp the blade thereto, said clamping-plate havin its forward ed e bent'downwardl in a Vance of the cuttin ed e of the b ade to "provide a guard t ere or' and having an opening throughout the reater portion of its lengt in register wit the cutting edge of the blade to ex ose the same, the corners of the blade being guarded by the ends of the downwardly turned portion of the clampln' plate.
n testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name-to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILLIP H. UNSINGER.
