MERRILL S.. ORTON AND PETER-I3. STILES, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 100.657, dated March S, 1870.
The Schdixle referred to in these Letters Patent and making pau-ty of the same.
To all whom -it ymay concern:
Be it known that we, MERRILL S. ORToN and PE- TER B. STILES, of the city of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, andState of Illinois, have invented a new' and improved Dish-VVasher; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referfence being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which--` Eigure 1` is a sectional view. g y Figure 2 fis a plan view. l Like lettersiu Aboth figures of the drawings indicate like parts.A 4 Y Our invention consists of a box, oil other suitable freceptacle, havinga three-pump,arranged in one co1'- n`e'r, on the inside thereof, and aremovable, triangular-shaped grate in the opposite corner, whereby dishes or other articles may be washed by placing theuron the grate, and submitting them to the action of the` water thrown from the pump, the box heilig filled sufficiently with water of a suitable temperaturef'oi' supplying the pump, thus furnishing a simple and c'onvenient method ot' Washing dishes. l
We are aware of the patent of y\VitherellV Witherell, December 22, 1868, in which a force-pump is used; but we construct and `arrange' our pump differently, so as to simplify the utensih'and thereby render it cheaper and more desirable ,for general use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its constmction and operation.`
A is the box, oi' a suitablersize and depth.
B is theeylinder ofthe pump, arranged in one corner of the box, and secured to the sides thereof in a propel' manner, and provided with apertures a at the bottom, and also with a valve, 1 for regulating the ad-V mission oi' the wat-er therein.
C i`s the plunger,V to whichxis attached the hollow piston-rod or tube l), having aj cap, c, screwed on to it at about'al. The tube passes through the plunger.
. In the tube is a valve, f, attached to an elongated rod, which valve is for the purpose of preventing the water from going back into the. cylinder after lit has kbeen pumped up, the rod causing the valve toopen and close the passage of the tube uniformly.
The cap c has a short tube, to whichis attached the` hose and pipe L. A
E is a handle, by which the pump is operated, the end thereof being hinged or pivoted to a plate screwed or nailed to the outside ofthe box, the handle having a hole by which it is slipped on over t-he piston-rod or tube, and then fastened thereto in any suitable manner. V F is the removable grate, composed of two plates attached at right angles, with bars across at the t-op,
each plate being of the length ot' the side'of the box,
on the 'inside thereof, so that the grate'v willv fit snugly in the. corner diagonally opposite. tothe cylinderot' the pump.
The grate can be conveniently removed at anytime, for the purpose of cleaning out the box, when desired. Operation.
The box being filled suiiiciently with water, the dishes are placed ou t-he grate, aud the water pumped on to them, the water passing through the apertures into the cylinder, and -thence into the tube, whence it is discharged `ont-o the dishes, as aforesaid.
`Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 In dish-washers, the arrangement of the pump B,
with its valves b j, plunger l), discharge-pipe L, cap c, and handle E,.in combina-tion witlirthe box A and grate 14, all arranged as shown and described. y
As evidence that we claim the .foregoing as our iuvention, we have hereunto set our hands in the proseuce ot two witnesses.
' MERRILL S. ORTON.
lllflER B. "TILES.
Witnesses:
CHARLES S'run, SAML. N. Gnosis.
