To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. KINSEY, Jr., citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression and Waste Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of devices known as compression cocks and pertains more particularly to a combined compression and waste cock.
An object of the invention is to provide a closure for the usual vent that will always seat perfectly before the valve or closure is opened to allow fluid to pass through the cock, and also that said ventwill be held shut until the valve is again shut.
Another object is to provide a compres-v sion and waste cock whose main opening and vent will be opened or closed independently by means of independent closures operated from a single member and by means of which, even after extended use the cock will be as efficient as when first installed even though the packing parts may be greatly worn.
Another object is to provide a compression and waste cock of such a structure that the vent therefor will be at the lowest possible point whereby the fluid will be thoroughly drained from the cock and from the entire pipe system connected therewith.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification.
In the drawing presented herewith Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved compression and waste cock. Fig` 2 is a similar view of a portion of the same with parts shown in a different position. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the body of the cock, and Fig. t is a hori- Zontal section of the same showing the stem of the cock, and a valve operated thereby.
Before entering upon the description of the device the particular advantages thereof together with its operation will be set forth, first explaining the disadvantages of valves of this kind commonly used.
In many devices of this type having a waste-closure the structures are usually such that in operating the stem a variable pressure is placed upon the said closure for the waste and it is evident that with each operation especially as the stem rotates, the face of said closure by being forced upon its seat will become grooved. This grooving may occur even though the said closure does not turn relative to the seat. The attendant is free to place great pressure upon the closure in his effort to seat it. W'hen the cock is new this pressure is, perhaps, unnecessary. But when the closure becomes worn or grooved due to this pressure, still greater effort is used since leakage then begins to appear and in time the cock is rendered useless. In my device, however, wherein the movements of the main valve and that in controlV of the waste or vent follow one another, the closure is so mount'- ed relative to the valve-stem and the movement of the latter is so limited that while both the valve and the vent-closure are made to properly seat each time the said closure is absolutely prevented being forced upon its seat to the extent that it will become injured. In consequence of this the closure is not injured and does not require replacing at short intervals as in other forms. And coupled with this advantageous feature is a peculiar arrangement of the parts of the closure. I employ a member of soft yielding material which is seated in the stem of the valve and upon this is seatedV a second member of harder material which seats upon and closes the vent. The soft material permits the hard one to yield under pressure as the stein is screwed down to close the said vent and this is a distinguishing feature of my invention and one of considerable importance. The result of the structure, therefore, is that since the hard disk can sink into the softer one no injury results to the former and the movement to tightly close the main valve is not limited. In addition the structure of my device is exceedingly simple and can be produced at a low cost as compared with other valves of which I am aware.
A indicates the body of the cock having the usual threaded extensions B and B to receive the pipe connect-ions (not shown) and C is a horizontally disposed diaphragm furnished with an opening D providing the only passage for fluid from one side B of the cock to the other. Said cock has a vertical tubular extension E provided with a cap F through which extends a vertically disposed stem G there being a suitable packing at I-I within the cap and surrounding the stem to prevent leakage, and J is a ring lying within the cap upon the said packing. l/Vithin the body A below the diaphragm is a vertically disposed boss K provided with a bore L. The top surface of said boss lies flush with the upper surface of the diaphragm C and is disposed centrally of the fluid passage D `thus making said passage an annular one. Beneath the bore L of the boss, in the body of the cock, is a vent M forming a drain for said cock which communicates through a passage N with that side of the cock having the extension B. The stem G hereinbefore referred to is provided at its upper end with any usual operating part O having a socket-member P which has a flange Q adapted to meet and bear upon the cap F. However this flange may be a part of or affixed to said stem if desired and its purpose will be shown hereinafter. The ring J within the cap F preferably is provided in its under surface with a conical seat R, and a flange S on the stem is adapted to seat therein the purpose of which will be explained later. flange S the stem is provided with a threaded portion T which engages an internally threaded nut or valve U having a recess 4 in its bottom in which is seated a packing ring 5 of leather or some suitable composition. Said stem extends down into the bore L of the boss K andis bored to receive two disks V and W. The lower of these two ispreferably of some firm material such as leather or some suitable composition and the upper one is of some softer composition that will yield, such, for instance, as soft rubber or the like and these said disks are held in position in any good manner as by a pin X. The valve U is provided with a shoulder 2 near its lower end between which, and the ring J, is a compression spring 3. Cast with the inner surface of the tubular extension E, at two diametrically opposite sides, is a pair of vertically disposed lugs 6 and the valve U has a lug 7 at two diametrically opposite sides to move vertically between them.
The relation of the parts are shown in Fig. 1 when the cock is closed and the vent is open, and Fig. 2 shows the relation of the parts when the vent is closed and just before the valve U is raised; the broken lines in the said figure indicating the raised position of the said valve.
In operation, when the parts have the position shown in Fig. 1, the lever O is turned kin such a direction, for instance, clock-wise,
that the stem G will move downward due to the engagement of its threads T with those of the valve U. When carried nearly to its lowest position the disk W is made to close the vent M as shown in Fig. 2 and in order to obtain this result the said stem must turn within the nut or valve U, the latter during thisV time being held upon itsseat by the Beneath this cock the valve U and the spring 3, and said valve cannot turn by reason of the engagement of its lugs 7 with the pairs of lugs or guides G described. At this time the flange Q of the socket-member P in moving downward meets and bears upon the cap F, Fig. 2, and as the vent M is closed to the passage of fluid the said flange Q forms a bearing for the stem and prevents it from moving farther downward. By a continued turning of the lever O thevalve U will be lifted from its seat on the diaphragm C to open the pressure-passage D. The spring 3, which heretofore has been under compression, is still further compressed and bears more strongly against the ring J thereby exerting more pressure upon the packing H than before. The ring is, of course, held in its place even though the flange S of the stem has been removed from beneath it. A reversal of direction of movement of the lever first results in causing the valve V to descend, the descent being assisted by'the spring. When the valve is fully seated the stem must rise to its original position to open the vent M, in turning within said valve, and the pipe system and the cock will then be drained.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that an annular recess surrounds the fluid passage D leaving a lip or rim upon which the packing 5 rests so that as said packing becomes indented from long use the flange of the valve U can descend into said recess so that a perfectly tight closure is always assured. There is also an annular depression surrounding the vent M whereby the tubular end of the stem G can lower into it as shown in Fig. 2. The important feature in my device is the provision of the hard and soft packing disks W and V respectively for t-he stem. When said stem is lowered as far as the flange Q of the socket-member P will permit, the hard disk W having already closed the vent before said stem has reached the lowest point, is brought with considerable pressure upon its seat which results in insuring a fluid tight fit and in consequence is forced against the soft yielding disk V which yields to it. This provides for allowing the stem to have considerable latitude of movement after the vent is closed and fully insures a positive closing of said vent in a fluid tight manner before the valve U is lifted. By the peculiar relation of the movable elements of the stem G have practically independent movements so that a thoroughly tight closing of one passage must result before the other is opened and this insures positively against any loss of pressure through leakage.
The cock can be adapted for right or left use according to its position when installing it in the pipe system as will be understood.
The main office of the spring 3 is that itv threads T and those of the valve will not tend to lift said valve. The threads can only raise said valve after the flange Q is seated on the cap F, and in the reverse motion of' the stem to open the vent the spring acts to carry thel valve down, and the flange S after having seated in the ring J then holds the i valve positively upon its seat. Also, when the flange S of the stem leaves the ring J the spring will hold the lat-ter against the packing H; this however is a secondary matter.
Slight changes may be made in my device as will fall within the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claiml. In combination with a cock having a main passage and a vent-opening, of a stem having its axis of rotation substantially coincident with the axes of the passage and opening, a closure for the vent, the same being carried by the stem, a yielding member carried by the stem to receive the pressure of the closure, means to limit the pressure of the stem in moving the said closure upon the vent-opening, and a valve carried by and movable relative to the stem.
2. In combination with a cock having a main passage and a vent-opening, of a stem having its axis of rotation substantially coincident with the axes of the passage and opening, a closure for the vent, the same being carried by the stem, a yielding member carried by the stem to receive the pressure of the closure, means to limit t-he pressure of the stem in moving the said closure upon the vent opening, a valve carried by and movable relative to the stem, and means constantly tending to hold the valve closed upon the main passage.
3. In a compression and waste cock the combination of the body thereof having a diaphragm dividing it into two portions and provided with a fluid passage, there being a vent in said body beneath said diaphragm and centrally of and beneath said fluid passage, a member provided with a packing adapted to seat upon the diaphragm and close said passage, means to yieldingly hold it upon its seat, a stem extending through said member and in threaded engagement therewith and provided with a yielding packing at its lower extremity adapted to close the fluid vent, said stem adapted when the said vent is closed to impart movement to the member to lift it from its seat.
4. In a compression and waste cock the combination of the body Vthereof provided with a horizontally disposed diaphragm having a fluid passage or opening through which fluid may pass from one side of the cock to the other, a member to seat thereon to close said passage, there being a fluid vent or opening in said cock, a vertically movable stem extending through the member and adapted to engage the same and also adapted to close the fluid vent, a stop for limiting the downward movement of the stem, means to limit its upward movement, said stem adapted in both its movements to successively close one of said openings and open the other, and means to yieldingly hold the member upon the diphragm.
5. In a compression and a waste-cock, the combination of its stem and the body having a dividing diaphragm provided with a passage, a valve seated upon the diaphragm and in threaded engagement with the stem, means to maintain a yielding pressure upon said valve in the direction of said diaphragm, there being a fluid vent in the body, and a member to close the vent and operated and carried by the stem and rotatable with the same.
6. In a compression and waste cock the combination of the body thereof', a dividing wall in said body having a fluid passage therein, a member to close said passage, means to yieldingly hold the member on its seat, a second member in threaded engagement with said member, there being a fluid vent in the body beneath the said second member, the latter adapted to close said vent, means to limit the travel of the said second memberl in closing the vent, and means to limit its travel in the opening movement. n

In a cock having a passage connecting its two sides, and a vent, of a stem having its axis of rotation substantially coincident with the axes of the bores of said passage and vent, a yielding closure carried by and rotatable with the stem to cover the vent, a valve for the passage having threaded engagement with the stem, a spring constantly tending to hold the valve closed, and means to limit the travel of the stem in both its directions of movement.
8. In a cock having a passage connecting its two sides, and a vent, of a stem having its axis of rotation substantially coincident with the axes of the bores of said passage and vent, a yielding closure carried by the stem to cover the vent, a valve for the passage having threaded engagement with the stem, means constantly tending to hold the valve closed, and stops to limit the movement of the stem in both directions of its longitudinal movement.
9. In combination with the body of a cock and its bonnet having a recess in its under side, of a packing in said recess, a stem extending through said bonnet and adapted in one of its extremes of movement to place pressure upon the said packing, means constantly tending to hold the packing in position and means to place increasing pressure upon the same when the stem 1s moved toward the other extreme of its movement.
10. In a compression and waste cock the I combination of the body thereof and a dividing diaphragm provided with a fluid passage, a member to there being a fluid vent in the body substantially axially coincident with the axis of the passage and having communication with one side of the cock, a single piece stem adapted for closing said fluid vent and havmg operative engagement with the first described member to operate it, and means to hold the first described member yieldingly upon its seat on the fluid passage.
11. In a compression and waste cock the combination of the body thereof having a fluid passage and a vent opening, of a valve forl said passage, a single-piece rotatable stem extending through the valve and in control thereof, and itself arranged to close the vent-opening, a device constantly tending to hold the valve upon the fluid passage, a stop toV limit the extent` of movement of the stem through the valve and toward and upon the vent-opening and to cause the valve to be lifted after the vent-opening is closed.
12. A stop and waste cock having a dividing diaphragm provided with a passage, a valve to close the passage, a stem in threaded engagement with the valve, there being a vent opening in the bottom of the cock, the saidstem provided with a socket in its lower extremity, a member of soft yielding resilient material seated in the bottom of the socket, a member of relatively harder material seated on the soft material and adapted to lie upon and close the 4vent opening, and a stop to limit the movement of the stem in closing lsaid vent.
13. A stop and Waste cock having a dividing diaphragm provided with a passage, a valve to close the passage,astem in threaded engagement with the valve, there being a n close said passage,
body of the vent-opening' in the bottom of the cock, the said stem provided with a socket in its lower extremity, a member of soft yielding resilient material seated in the bottom of the socket, a member of relatively harder material seated on the soft material and adapted to lie upon and close the vent opening, a stop to limit the movement of the stem in closing said vent, and a stop to limit the movement of said stem in the other direction.
14. A stop and waste cock having a dividing diaphragm provided with a passage, a valve to close the passage, a stem in threaded engagement with the stantly bearing with pressure upon and tending to close the valve, a stop to limit the movement of the stem in one direction of its movement, a stop to limit its movement in the other direction, the stem provided with a socket in its lower extremity, a member of soft yielding resilient material seated in the bottom of the socket, and a member of relatively harder material seated on said soft material, there being a vent opening in the cock closed by the last named member.
15. The combination with a stop and waste cock having a main opening and a vent opening in its body, of a valve stem, a valve carried thereby to close the main opening,
there being a socket in the stem, a member of soft yielding material seated in the socket, a member of harder material seated upon valve, a spring conthe first named material within said socket and adapted to close the vent opening, there being an annular depression in the body of the cock below the mouth of the vent for the purposes set forth.
