UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY J. HICK, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOB TO- THE MQCASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF. OHIO.
FILING APPLIANCE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. Hlox, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filing appliance.
The invention consists of a bill holder or a series of bill holders in combination with an index-carrying tray' having improved means for supporting or holding the names ofthe persons or concerns represented by each account in the filing appliance.
The invention further consists of an index-carrying tray and of improved means for supporting thedesignating mark-carrying device opposite each name indexed in the tray, whereby the location of any particular account can be readily ascertained.
The invention also consists of a tray provided with a series of inclined supports, each adapted to receive and sup ort a card or display device, and a series 0 indicating de-' vices of novel and improved construction, each of said indicating devices being arranged alongside of a support.
For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of filing appliance embodying my invention.
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a filing appliance, embodying my invention, parts thereof being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the index carrying tray. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a portion of the tray. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the tray. Fig. 5 is a per spective view of an indicator carrying dc: v1ce.
In the drawings1 indicates a suitable housing or casing of any general or special construction, but preferably adapted to support a filing appliance 2. The casing 1 preferably comprises a base or desk portion 1, having a drawer l", and a back or upright portion 1 within which is contained the filing appliance 2. The filing appliance 2 is illustrated as comprising 'a series of slip holding leavesv 2, each of which carries on one or both of its faces a series of slip holders 2".
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911. 1909. Serial in. 507,185.
2 indicates an indicator or signal-carrying device carried by each of the slip holders 2". An indicator, such as a number, letter, or abbreviatiom'may be secured to each of the signal-carrying devices 2 in any well known manner.
It will be understood that the filing ap liance may be of any other construction t at is adapted to hold slips of paper or records in systematic order.
4 indicates an index-carrying tray or support, preferably comprising a slide that is mounted upon suitable guides 1, 1, provided in the desk portion 1 of the housing 1 and immediately below a transparent top.
1 for the desk portion 1. The tray 4 1s preferably recessed, as shown at 4 to receive an index frame 5. The frame 5 is formed with a series of pockets 5, each of which has a substantially vertical front wall 5 and a rearwardly and upwardly inclined wall 5. The frame 5 is preferably formed from sheet metal, which is bent on transverse lines 5 to form the pockets 5, as best illustrated in Fig. 4:. Each of the pockets 5 is adapted to receive and support upon its inclined wall 5, a card or display device 5, upon which may be displayed the name of the person or concern represented by an account or slip holder in the filing appliance 2. It will be seen, by forming the pockets 5 each with an inclined wall 5, that the display cards 5 all face the eyes of the observer and can'therefore be quickly read.
6 indicates a plate arranged to extend longitudinally along one side and from end to end of the series of pockets 5. The plate 6 is preferably of U-shape in cross section so that the sides thereof will operate as end walls for the pockets 5. The frame 5 and plate 6 are preferably rigidly united.
In order to provide for a large number of pockets 5, I preferably arrange a plurality of series of pockets 5 side by side, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper face of the plate 6 is adapted to have printed or painted upon its surface, or otherwise support, a series of numerals, letters or abbreviations, one for each pocket 5*, which operate as indicators for the persons whose names are displayed thereon. In the preferred form of the invention, however, I provide a series of indicator-carrying devices 7, one for each pocket 5, that are adapted to be removably secured to the plate 6. .Each of these devices 7 is be understood that the side members 7".
clamp the opposite sides of the plate 6 and arevthus remov'ably held in position.
To those skilled or who become skilled in the art of making apparatus of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
In one application of the invention, the cards for carrying the names may be inserted in pockets in alphabetical order, in which case the indicator adjacent to each pocket will designatewhere the corresponding slip holder for each of the names can be located. As another application of the invention, it may be adapted to the keeping of accounts in hotels. In this case the indicators, such as numbers, are arranged in chronological order, each number re resenting the number of a room or suite 0 rooms. When a person registers at the hotel and is assigned to a room, the card bearing his name is inserted in the pocket adjacent to the number of the room assigned to that person. In this manner, the index serves a double purpose, one, to indicate who is occupying any particular room or rooms,
as well as indicating which rooms are ocoupied and which rooms are not in use, and second, to indicate the number of the persons account in'the filing appliance.
If desired, the'desk portion 1 of the housing 1 may be provided with two index-carrylng trays 4, one carrying the names of the persons represented by the accounts in I the filing appliance, in alphabetical order,
and the other tray having the indicators arranged in chronological order.
What I claim is 1. An index for a filing app1iance, comprising a tray, a frame having a series of pockets mounted on the tray, each of which pockets is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined wall, and an indicatorcarrying plate extending longitudinally and from end to end of the said frame.
2. An index for a filing appliance, comprising a tray, a frame having a series of pockets mounted on the tray, each of which pockets is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined wall, a plate extending longitudinally and from end to end of the said frame, and an indicator-carrying device carried by said plate and arranged adjacent to each of the said pockets.
v 3. An index for a filing appliance, comprising a tray, a frame having a series of pockets mounted in the tray, each of which pockets is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined wall, a plate extending longitudinally and from end to end of the said frame, the said plate being U-shaped in cross section to form depending sides, and an indicator-carrying device carried by the said plate and arranged adjacent to each. of the said pockets, the said device having side members adapted to removably engage the depending sides of the plate.
4. An index frame for a filing appliance, formed from sheet metal and bent on transverse lines to form pockets, each having. a substantially vertical front wall and an up wardly and rearwardly inclined wall for supporting a name display card, in combination with means for carrying a series of indicators one for each of the said pockets.
5. An index for a filing appliance, com prising a tray, :1 frame having a series of pockets, mounted on the tray, and a series of removably supported indicator-carrying devices, one for each of the pockets, arranged along one side thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
