State of Illinois, have invented certain new The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction by which the movement of the cover for openiug or closing the same controls the power shifting mechanism while the cover is locked automatically in the movement of a driven part of the machine to which the cover is applied.
A further. object of the invention is to provide means by which the shifting of a belt connection produces simultaneous movement of a brakeso that the machine may be stopped, the cover lock released, and the cover automatically opened.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invent-ion will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

The invention is a apted for application to any class of machine and to control any preferred power mechanism.
For-the purpose of illustrating one appli-. cation of the Invention, it is here shown in connection with a centrifugal extractor in which the numeral 10 designates the bowl of any desired shape or construction which is supported by the usual standard 11 and contams a basket 12 which is mounted upon .the driving shaft 13 for rotary movement.
This shaft is provided with a driving pulley 14 at its lower portion adapted to receive the usual belt which is guided in its movement thereto 'by the pulleys 15 mounted upon the frame 16 at the rear of the extractor. The shaft 13 is provided with a governor mechanism 17 which is here shown as of the usual ball and link type having the Patented Oct. v24, 1911.

Cooperating with a face of the driving pulley 14 is a brake shoe 20 which, as shown lever 21. The rocking movement is secured by the pivotalbearing at 22 while the yielding movement 'is obtained by the bolt 23 extended from the shoe 20 and the tension spring 24. The 'brake lever 21 is mounted upon a rock shaft 25 pivoted at 26 upon the base of the machine. This rock shaft has secured thereto a hand lever 27 which is disposedat one side of the machine and adapted to be held in its adjusted position by means of any ordinary latchcon- 'struction 28 carried thereby and cooperating with a fixed part of the machine. The rock shaft 25' has also secured thereto an operati'ng lever 29 which is connected at its upper end with the long arm of a bell crank lever 30 by means of the slotted connection shown at 31 in Fig. 1. The short arm of i this bell crank lever is connected by the rod. 32 with the shortarm of the crank lever 33 which is'pivotally mounted at 34 upon a standard 35. The lon arm of the lever 33 has a link 36' extend therefro nected to'one of the belt shifting fingers 37. The fingers are secured to the shifting rod 38 which also provided with stops-39 to limit its movement in o posite directions.
hese fingers cooperate with a belt which is adapted to shifted from the loosepulley 10 to the tight pulley 41, both of which are carried by the countershaft 12 mounted in the bracket-43' for that purpose. The countershaft also carries a brake mounted to be engaged by the oppositely m and con-' i pulley 44 disposed brake shoes 45. These shoes are the bracket 43. Surrounding the rods 46",
and bearing against the upper faces of the arms 48 are compression springs 51 which are held by the set-collars 52 secured to the rods 46. This provides a yielding pressure of the brakeshoes 45 against the pulley 44.
For the purpose of operating these shoes to apply the brake as the power belt is shifted to the loose pulley 40, a lever 53 is extended from the rock shaft 49 and provided with a slotted connection at 54 with the operating lever 29. I
The cover 55 is pivotally mounted at 56 (Fig; 4) and is adapted to be automatically opened when unlatched by means of a flexible connection 57 extended over 'a bearing roller 58 and provided with an operating weight 59. The cover is automatically latched in closed position when the machine is operating and any desired connections for that purpose may be provided, a
convenient form being here shown. In this form, the pivoted latch 60 is mounted upon the cover as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 to engage a portion of the bowl 10 and a rod 61 extends therefrom and is provided at the rear with a slide 62 having a hinge or pivot 63 adapted to be brought into alinement with the pivots 56 of the cover in order to permit the operation of the latter when the latch is in released position. vThe link portion 64 at the rear of the slide 62 is pivotally connected at 65 with a rod 66 which is connected with the lever 67 mounted on a rock shaft 68 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The rock shaft 68 has also secure-d theretoa lever 69 from which a connecting rod 70 extends to a lever 71 with which it has a loop connection at 72. This lever is mounted in a swivel bearing 73 carried by a bracket 74 upon the under face of thebowl 10. The inner end 75 of the lever 71 engages the movable member 18 of the governor mechanism andiis thereby shifted when'the-machine is run at the proper speed to operate the cover latch to lock the cover and holds this latch in locked position to prevent its foperation or the opening of the cover while the machine is being operated. The mounting of the lever 71 upon a vertical pivot permits a lateral movement thereof which is necessary in connection with a centrifugal extractor as in the preliminary rotation of this shaft, a lateral movementthereof occurs until the speed is sufiicient to maintain itin a true vertical plane and this movement is per-.
mitted by the pivotal mounting of the lever andalso its connection with the looped lower extending to the cover ing an inclined face 83 adapted to engage and operate a locking bolt 84 mounted within a fixed part 85 of the machine frame. The block 82 is adapted to cooperate, within a guide or way 87 while the bolt 84 is guided by a bracket 87 and normally retracted from locking position by means of a spring 88 disposed between the fixed part 85 and a setcollar 89 upon thebolt. The bolt 84 when shifted into locking position, as shown in Fig. 3, engages a collar or projection 90 carried by the rod 32 by which the belt shifter is actuated and prevents the operation of this shifter when the cover is opened to move the block 82 downward as shown in Fig. 3. When this block is in raised position and the cover closed, the bolt is automatically retracted by the spring and the belt shifter may be operated by the hand lever 27.
In the operation of the machine, when it is desired to start the operation thereof, the cover is closed and the hand lever shifted toward the rod in Fig. -l which releases the brake from the driving shaft of the basket and also from' the brake pulley on the counters haft and simultaneously shifts the belt from the loose to the tight pulley to start the driving of the shaft for the basket. The first movement of this shaft is lateral to sated by the pivotal mounting of the lever for operating the'cover latch. As the speed of the driving shaftincreases, it rotates in a true vertical plane and thegovernor thereon is operated to effect a locking movement 'of the latch upon the cover which is maintained so long as the machine is in operation. In'order to open the cover, the operation of the machine must be stopped and this is effected by a shifting'of the hand lever into the position shown in Fig. 1 which applies the brakes and simultaneously shifts the belt to the loose pulley. As soon as the speed or rotation of the driving shaft is reduced, the cover latch is automatically released by the governor and the cover automatically opened. When so opened, the locking bolt prevents further shifting of the belt and the cover must be closed in order to permit further operation of the machine.
It will be seen that this construction presents an eflicient and desirable construction by which the'opening of the cover is prevented while the machine is in operation as it is automatically retained in locked position at such times, while the shifting of the driving connection and the application of the brakes to the driven parts are controlled cover for said member, a locking device for 1 by the hand lever, the movement of which is prevented at any time when the cover is in open position. The construction therefore presents a safety cover which elfectually prevents accidents or injury due to opening the cover while the extractor or other machine is in operation.

In a safety device, a pivoted cover member, a rotating shaft for a drivenpart, a stop mechanism connected to control said shaft, a latch pivotedupon said cover memher, a governor mounted to slide upon said rotatable shaft, a lever engaging at one end a movable member of said governor, a swiveled pivotal support for said lever, and a connection from said lever to said latch.

In a safety device, a stopping mechanism, a controlling lever for actuating the same, a reciprocating connection between said mechanism and lever, amovable cover member, a stop carried by said connection, a-bolt mounted for movement in the path 7 of 'said stop, a spring for retracting said bolt, a sliding contact block to engage said bolt, and a connection from said block to said cover.

In a safety device, a stopping mechanism, a controlling lever for actuating the same, a reciprocating connection between said mechanism and lever, a movable cover member, a stop carried by said connection, a bolt mounted for movement in the path of said stop, a spring for retracting said bolt, a slidingcontact block to engage said bolt, a bell crank lever connected to said block, and a connection from said lever to the cover member.

In a safety device for a power driven machine, a drivingshaft, a pivoted cover member provided with a latch, a sliding op erating rod extending from said latch, a rock shaft at the rear ,of said cover provided with a crank arm connected to said sliding rod, a crank arm secured to the opposite end of said rock shaft and provided with a depending rod, and a connection from said rod to said driving shaft to actuate said latch.
22. In a safety device for a power driven machine, a driving shaft, a pivoted cover member provided with a latch, a sliding operating rod extending from said latch, a rock shaft at the rear of said cover provided with "a crank arm connected to said sliding rod, a crank arm secured to the opposite end of said rock shaft and provided with a depending rod, a connection from said rod to said driving shaft to actuate said latch, a lug carried by said cover, a'bell crank lever loosely mounted upon said rock shaft, a connecting link between said bell crank lever and lug, a tubular member carried b said bell crank lever and surrounding said depending rod,-a contact block carried by said tubular member, a stopping mechanism, and a lockin mechanism mounted for actuation by said" lock to prevent operation of said stopping mechanism.

In a safety devicefor a'power driven machine, a driving shaft, a pivoted cover member provided with .a latch, a sliding operating rod extending from said latch, a rock shaft at the rear of said cover provided with a crank arm connected to said sliding rod, a crank arm secured to the opposite end of said rock shaft and provided with a depending rod,a connection from said rod to said driving shaft to actuate said latch, a lug carried by said cover, a bell crank lever loosely mounted upon said rock shaft, a connecting link between said bell crank lever and lug, a tubular member carried by said bell crank lever and surrounding said depending rod, a contact block carried by said tubular member, a locking mechanism mounted for actuation by said block, a stopping mecha'nism having a depending actuating rod, and a stop carried by said rod to cooperate with said locking mechanism.
24. In a safety device, a pivoted cover member, a latch pivotally mounted thereon, a slide rod extending from said latch, a ivotally connected link slidably mounte at the rear of said cover, and a connection from said link to actuate said latch. I
25. In a safety device, a casing, a cover -member pivoted thereon, means for automatically holding said cover in closed position, and means for automatically opening said cover.
26. In a safety device, a. casing, a cover member pivoted thereon, means for automatically holding said cover in closed position, a flexible connection extending from said cover toward the rear of the machine, a bearing for said connection, and a tension device carried by said connection.
27. In a safety device for a power driven machine, a driving shaft for said machine, a countershaft, brake pulleys upon said driving and countershafts, a power controlling mechanism for said driving shaft,
lever connections to simultaneously operate said brake and power mechanisms, a cover member provided with a latch, and means carried by said driving shaft for automatically operating said latch.
28. In'a safety device for a power driven machine, a driving shaft for said machine, a countershaft, brake pulleys upon said driving and countershafts, a power controlling mechanism for said driving shaft, lever connections to simultaneously operate said brake and power mechanisms, a cover member provided with a latch, means carried by said driving shaft for automatically operating said latch, and means actuated by said cover for preventing operation of said power controlling mechanism when the cover is opened.
29. In a safety device for power driven machines, a. cover member, a driving shaft,
a power shifter, a brake for said shaft, connections to operate said brake simultaneously with the shifting of the power, and connections from said cover member to prevent the operation of the power shifting member when the cover is opened.
30. In a safety device for power driven machines, a cover member, a driving shaft, a power shifter, a brake for said shaft, connections to operate said brake simultaneously with the shifting of said power, and connections from said driving shaft to said ously with the shiftirig of the power, connections from said driving shaft to said cover member for latching the same while the shaft is rotating, and connections from said cover member to prevent operation of the power shifter when the cover is opened.
