JAMES ARTHUR JONES, 0F LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
CLEANER FOR CHALK-ERASERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed October 12, 1910. Serial No. 586,627.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES A. JONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Cleaner for Chalk-Erasers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improved apparatus for removing chalk dust from black-board erasers, and in practice I employ with it rough and fine pencil-sharpeners which are operated by the same shaft and the same motor as the chalk-eraser.
The details of construction, arrangement, and operation of parts are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4E4; of Fig. 2.
Upon a base 1 within the case 2 I arrange a motor 3 having a central driving shaft 4:. In practice, this shaft is connected at one end with a pencil sharpener provided with a cutter and at the other end with grinding rollers for smoothing the point, but neither of these is shown in the drawings.
An eccentric 5 is mounted on the motor shaft 4 and provided with a strap 6 having a rod 7 which is connected by a pin 8 with a stem 9 having at its upper end and rigid therewith a suction head 10, the latter being formed hollow and having perforations in both bottom and top, and constituting a seat for a challeeraser 11. The case 2 is cut out at the top to receive the head 10 and beneath the same is a spider 12 having a central bearing 13 through which the stem 9 is guided in its reciprocations. The arrangement of the eccentric 5 on the driving shaft is such that when in its lowest position the suction head 10 is close to the plate 12 and the throw of the eccentric is only sufficient to raise the head slightly.
The eraser is held to its seat on the suction head by a roller 14 which is ordinarily provided with a rubber tire and is carried at one end of an arm 15 pivotally supported onv a post 16, the said arm being drawn downwardly by a spring 17 which holds the roller pressed firmly on the eraser. The downward movement of the arm is limited by suitable means such as a stop 18 at the upper end of the post.
A suction pump 19 is arranged within the case 2 and below the suction head 10, it having blades or fans attached to the driving shaft 4: and the case of the fan being provided with an exhaust pipe 20 which leads to any suitable point outside of the case. Since the case excludes the air generally, except through the head 10, the fan, when in operation, will draw the dust from the eraser through said head and expel it through the discharge pipe 20. Thus chalk is rapidly and thoroughly cleaned from the eraser.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a reciprocating suction head having an eraser seat, and means to yieldingly press the eraser to the seat.
2. The combination of a case, a reciproeating suction head arranged over an opening in the case and having an eraser seat, and an exhaust fan arranged within the case to draw the air therein through the head and discharge it to a point without the case.
3. The combination of a reciprocating suction head having an eraser seat, and a pivotal arm having a presser roller arranged over the said seat. v
4:. The combination of a reciprocating suction head having an eraser seat, and a yielding presser roller arranged over the seat.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ARTHUR JONES.
