To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, SAMUEL BARUCI-I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough. ofBronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastener and Seal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners or seals for securing together the ends of a cord or wire to pre vent the latter from being removed. De- Vices of this kind are particularly applicable for fastening cord on an express package so that the latter cannot be opened without cutting the cord or mutilating the seal and rendering obvious the fact that the package has been tampered with.
The main object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the seal and at the same time to produce a seal which will lie substantially flat on the package and not interfere with the supporting of one package or box upon another.
Furthermore, my improved device serves for directly securing together the ends of the cord and avoids the necessity for first tying the ends.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package sealed by my improved device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device in operation; Fig. 3 is a section in a plane parallel to the body portion; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank; and Fig. 5 is a central transverse section.
In the specific form illustrated, my improved device is formed of a piece of sheet metal cut substantially triangular in form and having its outer corner portions 10, 11 and 12 foldable into superposed relationship to each other and upon a central body portion 13.
For simplicity in manufacture and use, it is desirable that the body portion have three sides, and that there should be three wings, although this particular number is not a necessity. Each of the wing portions may be of substantially the same size as the body portion, although preferably the outer corner or apex of each wing is rounded off or cut away as illustrated. Along the folding line between the body portion and one of the wings, for instance, the wing 11, I provide a series of perforations 14, each of a diameter corresponding to the size of the cord, string or the like, in connection with which the seal is to be used. As shown, there are four of these perforations, so that each cord may extend twice through the sheet metal. The device as manufactured will preferably have the several wings bent slightly so as to form obtuse angles withthe body portion, and to facilitate the further bending of the wings along the lines thus determined. The cord, wire or the like which surrounds the package, bag or other container has its ends extended in through the two outer perforations and thence outwardly through the other two perforations. The wing 11 is then folded down so as to form a sharp or acute angle in respect to the body, and is firmly pressed against the inner loops or bonds of the cord. The other two wings 10 and 12 are then folded down on top of the wing 11, and all of the wings and the body are firmly secured together. The securing means preferably comprises a lead rivet 15 extending through registering apertures in the wings and body. The rivet, after being extended through the apertures, may be headed or expanded by a suitable die, which will leave the name, initials, trade-mark or the like impressed in the head of the rivet. As the free ends of the cord lead inwardly through the sharp angle, it is evident that these ends cannot be drawn inwardly to loosen the cord. As the wings 10 and 12 overlap the wing 11 along the entire outer free edges of the latter, it is evident that the device cannot be readily opened so as to permit an instrument to be inserted into the device to loosen loops or bends of the cord.
The device is extremely simple to manufacture and to put into use, and, furthermore, it lies substantially fiat on the surface of a package, so that it does not in any way interfere with the stacking of the packages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire by Letters Patent, is:
