vTo all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Strong, in the county ofv Chase and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Combination Bung and Faucet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to faucets, and it" has for its object to provide a bung having contained therein valve mechanism for controlling the ow of liquid through the receptacle, and through an opening in the side of which the bung is disposed, so that when the plug is removed from the bung the valve is in position for use.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing my device attached to the side of a barrel; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but with the plug removed, and the valve member extended; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the invention with the plug in place.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the bung, which is hollow, is composed of two members 5 and 6, the member 5 having a head 7, at its inner end, and a threaded opening in its outer end 8, the thread on the outer end of the member 5 meshing with a thread on the inner end 9 of the member 6. The member 6, at its outer end 10, is enlarged, and has a thread 11 for engaging a threaded opening 12 in the plate 13, which is secured to an opening 111 in the barrel or receptacle 15. The outer member 6 of the bung is provided with a flange 16, adapted to rest against the plate 13. The outer end of the outer member 6 of the bung has an inner thread 17 with which meshes the outer thread 18 non the plug 19, this plug 19 having an angular projection 20, which may be readily engaged by a wrench, so that the plug may be conveniently removed.
In the bung there is disposed a valve member 21, which is hollow, with a valve seat 22 at its inner end, the outer end of the valve member 21 being provided with a head 23, having a threaded opening 24, the valve member 21 being also provided with an openin@ 25 in its side wall.
Tormally disposed against the valve seat 22 there is a valve 26, to which is secured a valve stem 27 the valve stem 27 having a threaded portion 28, which meshes in the threaded opening 24 in the head 23. Be-
. yond the said head a knob 29 is secured to the valve stem 27, this knob 29 being normally disposed in a recess 30 on the inner side of the plug 19. A spring 31 is disposed against the head 7, the function of this spring 31 being to push outwardly the valve 26 with the valve member 21, when the plug 19 is unscrewed from the bung.
It will be observed that the inner diameter of the outer member 6 of the bung is less than the inner diameter of the member 5 of the bung, and that the valve member 21 lits snugly in the opening in the outer member 6, while it is spaced from the opening in the valve member 5, except at the valve seat 22. The bung is therefore made in two sections, so that the valve member 21 may be readily disposed in position.
In using the invention the plug 19 is screwed in the bu`ng and the bung is screwed in the plate 13, which is secured in the opening 14C, in the barrel 15. Vhen it is desired to open the barrel 15 the plug 19 is unscrewed and is removed, when the spring 31 forces outwardly the valve 2G and the valve member 21, the valve 26 being disposed against the valve seat 22. When the valve member 21 is forced outwardly the opening 25 is disposed without the barrel, so that when the valve 26 is moved inwardly, by turning the valve stem 27 by means of the knob 29, the fluid may flow out through the valve member 21, the fluid reaching the inner member 5 of the bung through the longitudinal openings 32 which are-made in the sides of the said inner member 5 of the bung.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A bung having an opening therethrough, a cylindrical valve member disposed for sliding in the opening and having a seat at one end, a head with an opening at the other end and an opening in its side wall, a valve cooperating with the valve seat, a valve stem for operating the valve and projecting through the opening in the head, and a plug for closing the opening beyond the valve member.
2. A bung having an opening therethrough7 a cylindrical valve member disposed for sliding in the opening and having a seat at one end, a head with an opening at the other end, and an opening in its side Wall, a valve for coperating with the valve seat, a valve stem for operating the valve and projecting through the opening in the head, and resilient means for holding the valve member yieldingly extended.
3. A bung having an opening extending through its Wall at its inner end and also extending through the outer end of the bung, a valve member slidable in the opening and having a valve seat at its inner end, a head with a threaded orifice at its outer end and an opening in its side Wall, a valve for cooperating With the valve seat, a valve stem secured to the valve and having a threaded portion meshing in the threaded orice, a knob secured to the outer end of the valve stem, and a plug normally disposed in the opening in the bung for engaging the knob.
4. Albung having an opening extending through its Wall at its inner end and also extending through the outer end of the bung, a valve member slidable in the opening and having a valve seat at its inner end, a head with a threaded orifice at its outer end and an opening in its side Wall, a valve for cooperating With the'valve seat, a Valve stem secured to the valve and having a threaded portion meshing in the threaded orifice, resilient means for holding the valve member yieldingly extended, a knob secured to the outer end of the valve stem, and a plug normally disposed in the opening in the bung for engaging the knob.
