SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed October 10, 1910. Serial No. 586,340.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REGINALD WARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-F asteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figurel is a vertical sectional view through the meeting edges of the two rails showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal view of the fastener showing the parts in locked engagement. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring projected locking bolt of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the keeper or bolt engaging member of the device. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross sectional view of the device, on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
My improved sash fastener comprises a bolt member 1 and a keeper member 2 either of which may be secured to the upper or the lower sash. The bolt member comprises a base plate 3 having on its opposite side edges upwardly projecting anges 4 in which are formed longitudinal guide grooves or channels 5. On the outer end of the plate 3 is formed an upwardly projecting stop lug 6 the upper end of which is rounded or formed on a curve.
Slidably mounted on the plate 3 is a flat bolt 7 having on its opposite side edges longitudinal tongues or ribs 8 which are adapted to slidably engage the guide grooves 5 in the flanges 4 of the base plate. On the outer end of the bolt 7 is formed an upwardly and rearwardly projecting transversely curved flange 9 which slidably engages the stop lug 6 on the base plate and together with said lug forms a housing for a bolt projecting spring 10 which is arranged between the lug and the adjacent end of the bolt. The bolt end of the spring is preferably seated in a recess or socket 11 formed in the end of the bolt as shown.
In the base plate 8 is arranged a stop pin 12 the upper end of which projects above the plate and engages a short groove or recess 13 formed in the lower side of the bolt, whereby the movement of the bolt by the spring is limited. On the opposite sides of the plate are formed apertured fastening lugs 14 which are adapted to receive fastening screws 15 whereby the bolt member of the device is fastened to the sash rail. The keeper member 2 of the device comprises a block 16 having on its opposite sides apertured lugs 17 which are adapted to receive fastening screws 1S whereby said member is secured to the rail of the companion sash. The inner side of the block or the side next to the inner end of the bolt member 1 is beveled or formed at an angle as shown at 19 and in said side of the block at the base or lower end of the same is formed a bolt'receiving notch or recess 20. By forming the block with a beveled or inclined bolt engaging surface, the projecting end of the bolt, when brought into engagement therewith, by the closing of the sashes, will force the bolt back against the pressure of the spring until the end of the bolt comes opposite to the notch 20 in the block whereupon the spring will force the bolt into locking engagement with the notch.
Having thus described my invention what I claim. is:
A sash fastener comprising two members, one of which comprises oppositely disposed upwardly projecting guide flanges and a stop pin, and also having at one end an upwardly projecting flange provided with a rounded upper end, the other member comprising a flat bolt having tongues on opposite sides which are adapted to slidably engage said guide flanges, said bolt having on its outer end an overhanging rearwardly projecting transversely curved flange which slidably engages the stop In testimony whereof I have hereunto set lug on the base plate, said base plate and my hand in presence of two subscribing stop lug providing a housing, a, socket in Witnesses.
the bolt, a spring mounted in the housing REGINALD WARE. and contacting respectively with the socket Witnesses:
and Stop ange, and a recess in the bolt to EDW. R. PARENT,
engage the stop pin. METHYL I. DECKER.
