To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER P. M. SQUIREs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wire Stretching and Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in wire stretching and holding devices.

It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figurel is an elevation of a fence; Fig. 2 is an elevation of a fence showing a modified form; Fig. 3, a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, a section showing the parts in a different posi tion; Fig. 5, a perspective on an enlarged scale; Fig. 6, a detail of a modification.

My invention relates to means for providing a gate-like opening in wire fences and has for its object to provide practical means whereby at any desired point along a wire fence, a gate openlng can be made.

My invention can be applied when the fence is built or can be applied at any time thereafter at any desired point.

It comprises means-whereby the wires may be cut along a post and then associated either as individual wires or in groups with a tightening means so that by operating the tightening means the wires may be let down to form the gate opening, and may then be conveniently refastened to the post so as to close the gate opening.

Like parts are indicated by like letters in all the figures.

The fence posts A which support the wires A in the usual manner are provided with the brackets B which have the outwardly projecting lugs B between which is pivotally mounted the curved lever B upon the pivot B The curved lever B is provided near its pivotal point with the tightening hook O outwardly projecting, and at its other extremity with the locking hook C If the wires are to be handled in a group, then they should be attached, after having been severed near the post, to a rod D which is adapted to be engaged by one or more of the tightening hooks C, and the separate wires are adapted to'be engaged by the locking hooks O WVhere the device is applied to a single wire, the end of the wire after being severed near the post, is formed into a loop E which is adapted to be engaged by Specification of Letters Patent.

In either event when the tightening hook C has been brought into engagement with the rod D or the loop E, if the lever be carried around the post as shown in Fig. 3, the wire A may then be caught under the locking hook C This will prevent the lever from springing back and will cause the wire or the rod to be held in a rigid position.

In Fig. 6 is shown a modified form C of the locking hook. It is adapted to more securely hold the wire.

It will be evident that while I have shown in my drawings an operative device still many changes in size, form and proportions of the parts might be made, and certain features might be omitted and others be substituted therefor, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I wish, therefore, to have my drawings taken as diagrammatic.

The use and operation of my invention are as follows: The wires are first secured in permanent relation to the post in the usual manner. If new a gate is to be arranged for, the wires are severed near one post and the ends are attached to a rod D or each end of the wires formed into a loop. In the first case perhaps two of my secur ing devices will be sufficient; in the second case, there should be one for each wire. They are inserted as above described and thrown into position, whereupon the fence is as securely closed at the gate opening as elsewhere, but with little difficulty the levers may be detached and operated so as to free the severed wires and ermit the space between the two posts to l oe opened.

I claim 1. A wire stretcher comprising a fixed bracket, a curved lever pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a hook projecting from said lever adjacent its pivotal point and intermediate said point and the free end, and a hook upon the free end of said lever.

2. A wire stretcher comprising a fixed bracket, a curved lever pivotally mounted at one end upon said bracket, a hook projecting from said lever adjacent its pivotal point and intermediate said point and the opposed end, and a hook upon the opposed end of said lever.

3. A wire stretcher comprising a fixed bracket, a lever curved along its entire length and pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a hook projecting from said lever adjacent its pivotal point and intermediate said point adj aeent its pivotal point and intermediate and the opposed end and a hook upon the said point and the opposed end and a hook opposed end of said lever. upon the opposed end of said lever.
