Be it known that I, ISAIAH Ricimnps, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Au Sable Forks, in the county of Essex and State of New York, .have invented a new and Improved Banded Barker, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. f

This invention relates to a new and improved barker for removing the bark from logswhich are to be made up into paper pulp, and particularly relates to reinforcing means, in the nature of bands, for strength-Q ening and lengthening the life of the barker. An object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, exceedingly strong and durable, and efficient in its operation. r

A further object of this invention is to provide a barker comprising a plurality7 of members, spaced apart one from the other and secured to heads with bands encircling the same throughout 'the majority of the circumference, whereby the strength, rigidity and durability of the structure as a whole isv materially increased.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts,

will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all `the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view through a tank, showing the barker in position; Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section through the barker; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail `perspective view, showing the adjustable ends of one of the bands and the means for adjusting the same; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse section take-n at the middle of the barker, and showing the method of securing the middle band at the point where the door is located; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section through one end of one of the bands, showing its connection with the tightening devices.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates a suitable foundation, which also forms a pit 2, in which extends a barker 3, which is rotatably supported in any well known manner on the base 1, as by means of a shaft 4. The shaft 4 is secured in center castings 5, which are extended by means of plates 6 to form enlargedcircular heads, to which are secured in any well known manner a plurality of members 7. These members may be in the form of T-bars, angle-irons, or, asrshown, in the form of-chanuel bars, and are disposed in spaced relation, so as to permit the iiuid, such as water, with which the bark on t-heA log 'bcing'stripped is moistened, to pass through. The structure thus described, while efficient, may not be of suiiicient durability to lill all purposes to satisfaction. There are therefore provided one or

8, 9 and 10, which encircle the members 7 for afportion of the circumference of the barker, and are adapted to form reinforcing tie members for strengtheningthe structure. \Vhi1e any number of these bands may ,be used, it is preferable'rto provide three; one at each end andone in the center.

In order that access may be had to the interior of the barker, for the purpose of inserting and removing the logs treated, there is provided a door 11, which is openable in any well known manner.. At the point where the door is located, the side bands S i and 10 pass into the interior of the barker, as will be noted' at the section 12 in Fig. 2,

so as to permit the door to be opened without destroying the continuity of the encircling bands. In case of the intermediate or central band 9, it is undesirable to have the band stretch across the door opening, for the reason that it would not be so easy to insert and withdraw the logs. It is therefore desirable to terminate the band 9 atpointsl and let and secure the ends thus formed to bars 15 and 16, which are preferably made of steel and inserted between the flanges of the members 7. Besides the bars 15 and 16, the members 7 next adjacent thereto are also provided with iron bars 1T, which take up the strain at the ends of the center band 9 adjacent the door 11. The remainder of the members 7, with the exception of those composing the door 11, are provided with wooden bars 18,-which are inserted beneath the

It will thus be seen that there vis provided a device of exceedingly great strength and durability, which will perform the work desired in an etiicient and thorough manner.

While I have shown .one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and lalterations which may come within the scope of the appended claims.

The combination with a body portion comprising .a pair of heads and a pluralit of members secured to said heads in space relation, of-a plurality of bands embracing said members, some of said members'comprising a door for permitting access to the interior of said body portion, some of sald bands extendinginto ythe interior of said body portion at the point where said door is locatedand another of said bands term1nat-k ing on Aeither side of said door.
