MECHANISM FOR ACTUATING THE TOOL-SLIDES OF TURRET-LATHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID MILLINGTON and CHRIsToFrER MUNTHE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and a subject of the King of Norway, respectively, and residents of Friedenau, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Actuating the Tool- Slides of Turret-Lathes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for actuating tool slides of the type in which the backward and forward movements of the slides are produced by means of a rocking arm in which a pin is mounted for transmitting motion to the tool slide.
The essential feature of the present invention consists in arranging the pin by which the amount of the feed is determined in a slot in the tool slide, the position of which slot is capable of being varied at will.
In known constructions it has been hitherto possible to vary only the feed of the tool carried by the tool slide, and not the position of the tool slide, relatively to the work at the point where it is desired that the to-and-fro movement of the tool shall begin or end. This, however, is extremely important for machines in which the work cannot be secured in any desired position in the machine, but in which it is fed automatically only to a determined point, as for instance in turret lathes in which not only the amount but also the position of the feed of the tool slide depends entirely upon the work in each case.
One constructional form of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the mechanism.
In carrying the invention into eflect in one convenient manner, the rocking arm, 1, by which the tool slide, 5, is actuated, is caused to move to-and-fro by means of the rod, 2, in the usual manner. The arm, 1, is pivoted at 3, to the framing of the machine, and its motion is transmitted to the tool slide, 5, by means of a pin, 6, arranged in a disk, 7, mounted in the tool slide.
The arm, 1, is formed with a slot, 8, in which the pin, 6, preferably provided at its lower end with an anti-friction roller 9, engages. The pin, 6, may be moved nearer to or away from the pivot of the rocking Specification of Letters Patent.

arm, 1, for the purpose of varying the feed, by shifting the said pin in a slot, 10, in the disk, 7 and fixing it in its adjusted position by means of a screw, 11. In this manner by shifting the pin, 6, in the slot 10, the amount of the to-and-fro movement of the tool slide can be adjusted, and at the same time, by setting the slot 10 at an angle, the position may be determined in which the to-and fro movement of the tool slide can take place. Thus, by rotating the disk, 7, and therefore the slot, 10, the tool slide can be shifted in the frame, 4, of the machine to the right or to the left with reference to Fig. 2 without moving the rocking arm, 1.
The disk, 7, is fixed in its adjusted 'position by means of bolts 12, 12, engaging in slots 13, 13 in the disk.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that What we claim 1s:-
1. In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a slide, a rocking arm, means for operating the same, a pin slidably mounted on the arm, and a member adjustably mounted on the slide to assume different angular positions in relation to the rocking arm, said pin being adjustable on said member, and means for fixing it in its adjusted positions, substantially as described.
2. In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a slide, a rocking arm, means for rocking the arm, a pin slidably mounted on the rocking arm, said slide having a slot and means for fixing the pin in different positions in the slot, substantially as described.
3. In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a slide, a disk mounted thereon and rotatably adjustable, said disk having a slot, a pin adjustably mounted in the slot, and actuating means connected with the pin, substantially as described.
4- In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a slide, a slotted actuating arm, a pin slidable in said slot, a disk having a slot receiving the pin, adjustable means for fixing the pin in its adjusted position in the slot of the disk, and means for adjusting the disk to vary the position of its slot in relation to the slotted arm, substantially as described.
5. In apparatus of the class described, a
