Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, GABRIEL HEINRICH WlLLIAM Doosn, citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wave-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wave motors, and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for utilizing wave power, the particular object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient device which without manual care or attention will operate under the influence of wave motion to compress air in a suitable tank or reservoir, enabling the compressed air to be subsequently utilized for any desired purpose.
WVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the buoy used in connection with the device.
Corresponding parts in both figures of the drawing are denoted by like characters of reference.
1 designates a buoy made of any suitable material, such as sheet iron, and said buoy being preferably approximately pearshaped, as shown, it being, however, understood that the shape may be varied at will and also that any suitable material or combinations of materials may be employed in the construction. The buoy l is provided with a tube 2 which preferably extends approximately axially and vertically therethrough, said tube being open at the lower end. A link or clevis 3 1s flexibly connected with the lower end of the buoy by means of a connecting member, such as a bolt 4, and connected with said link or clevis is one end of a flexible element, such as a chain 5, whereby it may be anchored in position.
The upper end of the tube 2 is provided with a nipple 6 having an outwardly or upwardly opening valve 7. The nipple 6 is connected by a flexible hose or tube 8 with a storage tank or reservoir 9. Connected with the tube 2 near the upper end thereof, but below the nipple 6, is one end of a di-. vergent tube 10 which extends through and a suitable distance above the body of the buoy. The tube 10 contains a seat 11 for a Valve 12 which opens in the direction of the tube 2.
When the buoy 1 is anchored in a suitable position, the undulations of the waves will cause the water to alternately recede from and to rise in the tube 2. When the water recedes, the air inlet valve 12 will open, and atmospheric air will enter through the tube 10. When the water rises in the tube 2, the air inlet valve 12 will be seated, thus obstructing the tube 10, while the valve 7 will be unseated, and the air will be expelled from the tube 2 through the hose 8 and into the reservoir 9 where, by the repetition of the process, the air will be stored in a compressed state, it being understood that the compressed air thus provided may be utilized in any suitable and well known manner for the purpose of supplying the necessary power to drive machinery of any description or for other purposes.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the character described, a buoy, means for anchoring the same, a tube extending through the buoy and open at its lower end to the admission of water, a branch tube extending from the first mentioned tube through and above the body of the buoy, a valve seating in the branch tube and opening in the direction of the first mentioned tube, a nipple at the uper end of the first mentioned tube, an upwardly opening valve in said nipple, a reservoir, and a flexible duct connecting the nipple with the reservoir.
2. In a device of the character described, a reservoir, and means for compressing and storing air in said reservoir, said means including a buoy having a main tube open at one end to the admission of water, a flexible In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
