BRAKE-BLOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE SANGUINE'rrI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vallecito, in the county of Oalaveras and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brake-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wagon brakes and particularly to brake blocks.
The object of the present invention is to provide in a-wago'n brake, a brake block including means by which-the members subjected to wear and which are adapted to be applied to the periphery of a wheel may be easily, quickly and substantially adjusted in position; and to provide a brake block which may be built up with removable shoes or wearing plates of any suitable material, and which material may bl of any width, length or thickness and can be firmly attached in position to complete the brake block.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fi re 1 is an edge view of the brake block. Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the brake block. Fig. 73 is a rear'view of the brake block. Fig. 1 is a plan view.
In the present embodiment of my invention I employ a back plate 2 which may be of any desirable material and of proper length, width and height, as the size of various vehicles and wagons to which the device may be mounted will determine. The back plate 2 may be formed of one continuous strip of metal folded backwardly and curved sufficiently outwardly to form a stirrup 3 to which may be connected the brake bar 4, and which brake bar 4' is connected to the strip 3 by any suitable device, here shown as a strap 5, which is perforated at its rear portion to form a swivel joint 6 for the end of a screw 7, which is threaded in a block 8. The block 8 is attached to the rear portion of a spider having a plurality of arms 9 projecting forwardly so as to connect to vertical clamp rods 10.
I have shown the spider 9 as comprising four arms extending in pairs forwardly. Suitable material forming wearing shoes, as 12, which may be of any reasonable thickness and other proportions as may be conveniently obtained, may be inserted between the front surface of the back plate 2 and the rear surface of the vertical clamp bars lO.
A particular t-ion is the combination with the back or supporting plate 2 and the clamp bars 10 of means whereby the brake block can be composed of wearing shoes, thicknesses; and to that end I provide the screw 7 engageable with the block 8. The screw 7 is swiveled at 6 in the rear of the back plate 2. Thus, should the wearing shoes, re resented at 12, be of comparatively thin stoc the screw 7 would .be turned so as to draw the clamps 10 tightly against the face of the shoe 12 and force the latter tightly against the back plate 2.
The longitudinal edges of the back or supporting plate 2 may be slightly. upset to form ribs 13 to prevent an endwise movement of the sections of the shoe 12, and also, if preferred, the clamping faces of the clamp bars 10 may be roughened or provided with spurs to bite into the surface forming the shoe 12. The ears 11 are slotted centrally, as at 15, to receive the extremities of the clamp bars 10. These bars are thus prevented from transverse movement between the walls of the slots 15.
