UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. HENDERSON, OF STEEWTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO THE PENNSYL- VANIA STEEL COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILROAD-SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Application filed October 2, 1907. Serial No. 395,614.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line Fig. 4 is a section on the 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line zz, of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to improvements in split switches, the object being to provide a renewable hard metal point for the point rails of such a switch, which shall be of novel construction and of great strength.
The invention consists in removing the head of the point rail for some distance to the rear of the forward end thereof, and providing, in lieu of said removed portion, a
ard metal point-forming piece provided with a web portion secured to the web of the point rail.
In the drawings :1 is the main or track rail of a split switch, and 2 the movable point rail, the head portion of the forward part of which is removed, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Fillin the space usuall occupied by the head of t e point rail, an tapering oil to the point in the usual maner, is a hard steel wear-piece, 3, the under side of the head portion, 4, of saidpiece 3 resting for a portion of its length upon and supported by the web 5 of the point ra'l 2. Extending downwardly from said hdd portion 4 of the wear (piece, on the outer side of the point rail, an its lower edge resting upon and supported by the foot flange 6 of the rail 2, 1s a web portion, 7. This web ortion extends rearwardly beyond the termination, 8, (Fig. 1) of the head portion, 4, of the wear-piece, constituting an extension, 9, (Figs. 1 and 5) fittin the space between the head, web and foot ange of the outer side of the point rail to the rear of said cut away portion.
()n the inner side of the point rail and fitting the web thereof, is the usual strap, 10. The wear-piece, point rail, web, and strap the point, it will be observed that a very strong and eflicient switch point is provided; the hard-metal wear-plece, which is usually a casting, being supported by the continuous rail throughout its entire length.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a railway switch, the combination with the main red and switch rail, of a reinforcing bar secured to the side of the switch rail toward the main rail and pro jecting above said switch rail to form the wearing edge, substantially as described.
2. In a railway switch, the combination with the main rail and switch rail, said switch rail having the head removed from the point ortion thereof, of a reinforcin bar secure to the side of the switch rail toward th main rail and projecting above said switch rail to form the wearing edge, substantially as described.
3. In a railway switch rail, the combination with the main rail and the switch rail, of a removable oint section secured to the side of the switc rail toward the main rail and projecting above said switch rail to form the wearlng edge, substantially as described.
4. In arailway switch, the combination with the main rail and switch rail, said switch rail having the head removed from the point ortion thereof, of a removable point section secured to the side of the switch rail toward the main rail and projecting above said switch rail to form the wearing edge, substantially as described.
5. In a railway switch, the combination with the main rail and switch rail, said switch rail having the head removed from the point portion thereof, of a removable point section secured to the side of the switch rail toward the main rail and provided with a head occupyin the position of the cut away portion of t e head of the switch rail and tapered to form the switch point, said removable point section having a web portion adjacent to the web of the switch rail and secured thereto, substantially as described. 5
6. In a railway switch, the combination with the main rail and switch rail, said switch rail having the head removed from the point portion thereof, of a removable point section secured to the side of the switch rail toward the main rail and pro vided with a head ortion and a Web portion only, said head portion being tapered to form the switch point and said web ortion being secured to the web of the switch rail and adapted to rest u on the base of the switch rail, substantial y as described.
.7. In a railway switch, the combination with the main rail and a switch rail comprising a head, a web and a base portion, of a removable switch point comprising a head and wefisection only, the head portion projecting above the switch rail toreceive the load and the web portion being secured to the web of the switch rail and seating upon the base of the switch rail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
