To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoMno WANKMt'iL- LER, a citizen of the German Empire, and residing at Berlin, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Airships, of which the following is a description.
The present invention relates to that class of balloons described in my pending application Ser. No. 607,469 filed February 9, 1911, of which the present application is a division and in which several auxiliary cars are suspended from the envelop of a dirigible balloon and connected to and adjustable from the main car.
According to the present invention novel means are provided for adjusting not only the height of the auxiliary cars but also their distance apart as regards each other and from the main car.
In order to render the present specification easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawing which represents a diagrammatic end view of a dirigible balloon showing two auxiliary cars and the means for adjusting the same from the main car. The main car 2 is suspended from the balloon proper 1 in the usual manner, while the auxiliary cars 3, 3 are sus pended substantially tangentially from the balloon or envelop at each side of the main car by means of a tackle 9 adjustable by means of pulleys 8 and lines 10 from the main car, so as to regulate the vertical. height of the auxiliary cars. Obviously, when the parts are in the position illustrated in the drawing and if the pivot 5 is lowered by winding the line 11 on to the drum 6 of the winch the rigid bars 4 will force the auxiliary cars 3, 3 farther apart. It, on the other hand, a line 11 is unwound from the drum the weight of the cars 3 will force the pivot 5 upward until the cars have assumed the vertical position by gravity.
What I claim is 1. In a balloon the combination of a main car and auxiliary cars suspended from the envelop, rigid connections between the auxiliary cars pivoted together above the main car and means for raising and lowering the pivot of the said rigid connections from the main car.
2. In a balloon the combination of a main car auxiliary cars arranged at each side of the same, rigid links having one end connected to each auxiliary car and the free ends pivoted together, means for raising and lowering the pivot of the said links from the main car, and means for raising and lowering the auxiliary cars bodily also from the main oar, substantially as described.
