- A Letters Patent No. 100,501, dated March 8 I870.
,IMPROVEMENT'IN CULTIVATORS.
and. Schedule referre d to these Letters Patent and making part of the same To'all whom it mag concern.- a
Be it known-that I, HORAQE CARR, of Wooster, in the county of Wayne, and State of Ohio, have invented anew and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
in which Figure l is a top or plan view.
. .Figure 2 is asection onlline x as. 1
- Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 Figure 4 is a section on line 2 z.v Figure 5, rear view of section of axle, with shovel- .beam;
This invention relates tothe raising ofthe shovels from the ground by the arrangement of a number of levers, 880., which will beluhderstood from the follow ing description. I I v a The accompanying drawings represent a cultivator with two wheels, A A. a
Bf'is the connecting-axle, supporting tl e sisfbeams with their respective shovels."
, G is a small fi'amehinged to the front of. said axle, and su|.)porting a drivers seat, G, and the tin-ward end of a lever, B, \vhidh is so connected \i'itlrthe axle B that the latter may be turned in the wheels AIA by'it, to raise all 'the shovels at once from thegrdund.
, E are slottedhangersqfor lugs, the-upper portii-msf ofjwhich form clasps, E',;for the axle B,to, which said hangersare; secured by clips, crossing said axle any secured to the parts E. bycnuts screwed on theilat-tein' ear theirforward ends thebeams are pivoted within the hangers E.
Fare vertical links hingedjat their lower ends to .the ends of the beams 19';
"1 Ware levers attached to and workiugon the clipsE, andconuectingnvith the upper. ends of the I links 1*. Theselevers extend back from theirfulcra,
and are curved upward, as shown in the drawings, (figs. 2,3,4.) v
i To the back and upwardly-curved port-ions f of the two middle levers, marked in the drawings F", rods G are hinged, which, reaching forward, are also hinged to theupright Qarms' or standards g of the V-shaped l'ocking devices 0', articulated at their angles on the frameO. i
The forward or inclined arms g, are formed into foot-pieces, by the downward pressure of which the "two middle s'hovels nre'made to rise from the ground.
H are .springsattachedto the front part of the frame 0, and pressing against the arms g. The force of these springs lowers the shovels, when the rocking device-is released from the foot pressure. As shown in. fig. 1,the shovels and beams are arranged in two sets of'three each. r n r Reaching across the back of the curved parts of the levers I!" F, connected with said beams, are bars 1 in the wheels, and
13", against which all said levers rest, but which are secured to the outer and adjoining levers marked F only.
a I are barsor handles articulated .to the frame 0, and connected by rods 1 with the bars 15". When either of said levers is thrown forward, the three shovels on the same side are raised at once from the ground,
or two, if the middle shovel be already raised.
Kare elevated horizontal lock-bars,'to retain the lovers I when thrown forward or' backward.
i D is a hand-bar, hinged at its tin-ward end to the frame 0, and connected by a link L and arm L'fiwith the axle B, by means of which the axle is turned with-,
lowered at once. r i
For convenience,the'arln L curves upwardly outside or behind and above the bar F".
An additional beam may be adjusted between the two middle beams, to be raised by the turning of the axle B. My improvements, with the functions and operations of the different devices having been sufficiently described, Q
vWhat I claim as myinvention, is-
l. In a wheelcultivator hav lent cross-bar or bars sustaining the shov'el-beains with their shovels, ancl which axle or'cross-bar may be so turned on itsbearings" as to raise or lower the shovels from the ground, as set forth, so arranging. or articnlatingthe shovel-beams on separate bearings that they may be raised or lowered either singly or in setsof two or more, independently of the movement of said axle or crossbar. I 2. The combination and arrangement of the bars I, levers F F, bars F", and shovel-beams Ef", sub'-' stantially as and for the purposeset forth.
3. 'lhecombi-nati'on and, arrangement of the device G, lever FT, connecting-rod G, and link-E, with a single beam 12', so that said beam may with its shovel be raisedor lowered independently of the rest, substantially as set forth. i
4., In combination with the articulated beams E",
the hangers E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. 5. In combination with the independently-articulatedobeams E and axle B, the lever D, link L, and
arm Lfisubstantially as and for thepurpose specified. i 6. The lock-bars K, in combination with the arms I and beamsE, for the purpose set forth.
7. The springs H, when arranged as and for the purpose described, in combination with the rocking device G, and beams HORAOE CARR.
