MOP-WRINGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS JOHN ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Mop-\Vringer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mop wringers and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will have no brackets or like complicated bearings to get out of order, the parts being few in number, strong in structure, and durable and effective in operation.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which the movable roller frame is so fulcrumed on the stationary roller frame that a powerful, downward and inward pressure is imparted by the foot lever to the movable roller frame.
A further object is to provide a device of this character that, when removed from a pail, can be collapsed in a flat compact form quickly and easily.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear in the following specification and be set forth in the claim, my invention embraces the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which, is shown a perspective view of a combined pail and mop wringer constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the movable roller dotted in final position.
At this point it may profitably be stated that both sides of the device are of the same construction, with the exception that but one spring 24, hereinafter described, is employed.
In a more detailed description of my invention, in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the views shown, 1 designates a pail or bucket of the usual kind, to one of the lateral sides of which is attached an angle iron foot piece 2, the lateral flange 3 of which rests on the floor and forms a means for holding the pail stationary thereon when the mop wringer is in operation. Attached to the opposite sides of the pail is the stationary roller frame which consists of a pair of parallel side bars 4: positioned in inclined relation to the vertical aXisof the pail, having their upper ends connected by a rod forming a shaft 5 for a rotatable roller 6. This roller may be made of wood, fiber, rubber or similar material and forms what will Specification of Letters Patent.

hereafter be termed the stationary roller of the device. The stationary frame may be secured to the pail in any desired manner, but in this instance for simplicity in construction the connection is made by bolts 7 and 8 passed through the opposite ends of the side bars and engaging registering openings in the walls of the pail, each upper bolt 7 having a screw threaded shank carrying a nut 9 adapted to bear against the outer surface of the side bar and hold the same securely in position, the lower bolts 8 being considerably longer than the upper bolts, the purpose of which will presently appear, and each terminating in a screw threaded end carrying a nut 10.
Pivoted on the stationary frame and normally held inclined thereto is the movable roller frame comprising a pair of parallel side bars 11 disposed on opposite sides of the pail and connected at their upper ends by a rod constituting a shaft 12 for a roller 18 which is similar in construction to and adapted to work in conjunction with the stationary roller and will be termed the movable roller ofthe device. The lower ends of the side bars are pivotally connected to the stationaryframe above the lower end thereof by means of bolts 14, the shanks of which pass through registeringopenings in the stationary and movable side bars and terminate in screw threaded ends carrying nuts 15 adapted to bear upon the outer surfaces of the movable side bars and retain the same in place.
Secured to each of the movable side bars 11 intermediate the ends thereof is a link 16, one end of said link being pivotally connected to the side bar by means of bolt 17 carrying a nut 18 to retain a link in place, the lower end of each link being pivotally connected to a foot lever 19. The foot 1ever 19 consists essentially of a U-shaped metal yoke terminating in parallel arms 20, and is preferably made of spring material to give a yielding pressure to the device to prevent the racking or injuring of the parts when in operation. The terminals of the yielding arms 20 are provided with openings to engage the before mentioned extended shank of the lower securing bolts 8, and are held spaced from the sides of the stationary side bars by washers 21. It will thus be seen that the foot lever is pivotally connected to the stationary frame at a point below the pivotal connection of the movable frame and operates through the medium of the connecting links 16 to rock the movable frame and place the roller carried thereby in cooperative relation with the roller carried by the stationary frame.
Positioned intermediate the ends of the yielding arms are bolts 22 which engage registering openings in the ends of the links 16 and serve to pivotally connect the links to the arms. The bolts 22 terminate in screw threaded ends to carry nuts 28. Between a nut 23 and the adjacent link 16 is secured one of the terminals of the coil spring 24, the opposite terminal 25 being engaged around the shank of the upper securing bolt 7 and held secured between the nut 9 carried thereon and the lateral face of the stationary side bar 4:. The spring when in normal position operates to hold the rollers 6 and 13 spread apart so that a mop may readily be inserted t-herebetween and when the foot lever is depressed the spring will be put under an increased tension to return the rollers to their initial position as soon as the foot lever is released. A treadle 26 of any desired construction is secured to the foot lever, preferably at the center thereof, and upon which the foot is placed to depress the foot lever and bring the roller in contact.
The device when removed from the pail may be collapsed into a flat compact form by removing the nuts 18 that retain the connecting links 16 to the movable frame. The links may now be extended forwardly in the direction of the movable roller, the movable roller moved into contact with the stationary roller, and both laid back upon the foot lever in which position the device is in flat form ready for shipment or storage.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will readily be understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that variouschanges in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made without sacrificing any of the advantages or departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is As an article of manufacture an attachment for pails and the like, including straight parallel side bars, a roller interposed between the bars at one end and mounted for rotation, means for attaching the bars to a pail, straight parallel side bars pivotally connected to the first mentioned bars, a roller interposed between and movable with said pivoted bars, a yoke pivotally connected to the side bars at those ends thereof farthest removed from the roller carried by said bars, said yoke having all portions disposed in the same plane, a spring interposed between and connecting one side bar with one side of the yoke, and a link connecting each side of the yoke to one of the pivoted bars, the links being detachably connected to the pivoted bars and being straightfrom end to end, the side and pivoted bars, the links and the yoke being foldable together.
