incassa.
To `all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALLEN, a. citize lof Germany, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bedstead, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bedstead ot. novel construction more particularly adapted for boat trave1,'as it will absorb vibrations and retain a substantially level position during lateral and longitudinal motions of the vessel. I
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a bedstead embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a. plan; Fig. 3 a cross section on line 3-3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 an enlarged section on line 4 4, Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 a detail of one of the spiral springs.
` To the legs 10 of the bedstead is secured a frame 11 provided with cross slats or bars 12. These bars support a number of spiral springs 13 arranged in two longitudinal rows on opposite sides of the longitudinal axisof the bed. Each spring 13 is provided with a head 14 into which is tted a bulged pad 15 made preferably of rubber.
The bed bottom 16 which may be lined as at 17 is provided with two longitudinal rails 18, which are likewise arranged on opposite sides of the bed axis, and are alined with springs 13. In this way the spring pads 15v will obtain a bearing on the rails, and permit the bed bottom -16 to be freely tilted from side to side.
Each of the two end pieces 19 of the bedstead is provided between its top rail and the corresponding rail of vtrame 11, with a centrally disposed tubular casing 20. This casing slotted as at 22 for the passage of a gudgeon 23 extending axially outward trom the end rails of bed bottom 16. Gudgeon 23 is free to turnjjn a bearing 24, normally centered within casing 2O and which 'is spring supported as well as spring suspended. With the construction shown, a lower; spring 25 extends from bearing 24 to the bottom ot casing 20, while an upper spring 2G extends from the bearing to the to'p of such casing. The upper end of this top spring 26 may bey hooked to a screw ring 27 engaging the threaded upper end of casing 20, by which construction the assemblage ,of the parts is Specification of Letters Patent.A

facilitated while the tension of both springs is regulable.
It will be seen that when the ship pitches or rolls, such movement will in great part be counteracted by the bed bottom, which is retained in a substantially level position by the weight of the sleeper and his involuntary effort to counterbalance the tilt of the ship. That is to say during a rolling movement of the ship, the sleeper will maintain the bed bottom level by changing his lateral pressure and thus unevenly compressing the right and left springs 13. During a pitching movement the level position is maintained by changing the head and foot pressure, and thus compressing springs 25, 26
lunevenly on opposite ends of the bed.
l claim:
1. A bedstead provided with end pieces, spring controlled bearings connected thereto, a bed bottom pivoted to the bearings, and means for yieldingly supporting said bottom.
2. A bedstead provided with end pieces, tubular casings connected thereto, springhung bearings movable within the casings, and a spring-supported bed bottom journaled in the bearings.
3. A bedstead provided with end pieces, tubular slotted casings connected thereto, bearings in the' casings, upper and lower springs connected to the bearings, and a bed bottom having axially extending gudgeons that project into the casings and are rotatable in the bearings. i
4. A bedstead provided with end pieces, slotted casings connected thereto, bearings in the casings, screw rings tapped into the casings, springs connecting the bearings with said rings, and a bed bottom having axially extending gudgeons that project into the casings and are rotatable in the bearings.
5. A bedstead provided with a frame, spiral springs mounted thereon, bulged pads carried by the springs, a bed bottom supported by the pads, and having axially extending gudgeons, and spring-hung bearings engaged by the gudgeons.
