BERNI-IARD SUCKER, OF WEICHAU, GERMANY.
OHANGEABLE EXHIBITOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
Application filed April 5, 1911. Serial No. 619,167.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD SUoxnR, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Weichau, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Urermany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Exhibitors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toa device which indicates in railway cars at which side the passengers have to get out. It is obvious that such a device is of great practical value as it facilitates the traific and serves for preventing accidents.
According to the present invention a sign board having the inscription Get out at this side is automatically made visible when the train arrives at the station to be automatically removed when the train leaves the station. The shifting of the sign board is effected by means of a mechanism which is operated from an abutment placed on the line under the car against which strikes one of the horizontal arms of a disk. The abutments are removable so that the indicating device is operated only when the train stops at the station. There are two identical devices, arranged in the car one at either side. A bell signal can be connected with the indicating device to attract the attention of the passengers.
In the accompanying drawing the improved indicating apparatus is shown Figure 1 shows diagrammatically the indication device mounted in a railway car. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows the sign board.
The mechanism for operating the sign board consists of a vertical disk 9 with horizontal arms f. The horizontal axle c of the disk is revolubly mounted in a suitable bearing 6 which stands perpendicular to the rails. On the axle c a crank d is fixed to the upper end f of which a push-rod e is linked. To the upper end of said push-rod e a lever g is hingedly connected which is fixed on an axle h. Upon the axle h a curved board '5 is fixed which has two in scriptions such as-for example: Get outat this side and a hand pointing in the corresponding direction. The inscriptions are arranged on the upper and on the lower part of said board the middle of which is free. The curved board z is inclosed in a case is which has a longitudinal window Z through which about of the curved board is visible. According to the position of the lever arm 9 the curved board 2' is turned so that the lower inscription, the free middle part, or the upper inscription appears behind the window Z. At the sta tion an abutment m is placed between the rails. One of the horizontal arms a of the disk 39 strikes against the abutment m whereby the disk is turned through a quarter of a revolution. This revolving motion of the disk is transferred by the crank (Z and by the vertical rod 6 to the lever arm 9 which makes the axle h and consequently the curved sign board turn so that it revolves and brings instead of the empty middle space one of the inscriptions behind the window. A signal bell 11. mounted in the car is operated when the curved board 2' revolves. In each car two identical devices are arranged one at either side of the car. The abutment m which is removable is placed at the side of the line at which the passengers have to get out.
On the bearing b for the axle of the disk p with the horizontal arms a; a blade spring 0 is fixed which is designed to engage with the notches of the disk 7), so that this disk is secured in its respective position.
I claim An indicating device comprising in combination a casing mounted in the car and having two windows, a curved board at the left hand side of the casing, and a similar board at the right hand side of the casing, an inscription on the upper part of said boards, and a similar inscription on the lower part of said boards, and actuating means for each board comprising a horizontal axle on which said board is fixed said axle being revolubly mounted in the rear wall of said casing, a lever arm fixed to said horizontal axle, a vertical push-rod hingedly connected at its upper end with the free end of said lever arm, a crank arm linked to the lower end of said rod, a bearing fixed under the bottom of the car, a horizontal axle mounted in said bearing its outer end being connected with said crank, a notched vertical disk fixed on the inner end 01": the horizontal axle, horizontal arms projecting from said notched disk, a blade spring fixed to said support and engaging In Witness whereof I have hereunto set With its free end with the notches of said my hand in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
disk and an abutment removably mounted betteen the rails so that one of said hori- BERNHARD SUCKER zontal arms strikes against the same, substantlally as descrlbed and shown and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses RUDOLF SCHMIDT, MEIGDEN SCHMIDT.
